Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A heavily pregnant woman and her Chinese husband had a close call on September 9, when their car plunged into a pond after she accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake. Both managed to escape safely from the submerged vehicle. The incident occurred in the Wang Takhian sub-district of Kabin Buri, Prachinburi province, when a 30-year-old woman, eight months pregnant, was driving with her husband. They were attempting to turn the car around when she mistakenly pressed the accelerator, causing the car to speed into a nearby pond. The pond, covering an area of over 3 rai (about 1.2 acres) and with a depth of 4 metres, quickly engulfed the vehicle. The couple managed to swim to safety and walked approximately 400 metres to seek help from a nearby roadside vendor. Rescue services were immediately contacted and arrived on the scene to assist. The pregnant woman, identified as Ms. Wannarat (surname withheld), and her husband were transported to Kabin Buri Hospital. Ms. Wannarat was admitted to the emergency room for a thorough check-up to ensure the safety of both mother and unborn child. According to a local vendor, Thaworn Kumchan, who was the first to assist the couple, the woman explained that they had been searching for a rental house and decided to turn around for another route. However, as she made the turn, she accidentally pressed the accelerator, causing the car to plunge into the water. Rescue divers were dispatched to retrieve the vehicle, which was submerged at a depth of 4 metres. They successfully pulled the car, a yellow MG sedan, from the water. The front of the car had sustained significant damage. Authorities believe the woman likely shifted gears incorrectly and pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, leading to the accident. Fortunately, her quick thinking to instruct her husband to open the car door allowed them to escape before the vehicle fully sank. The incident ended without injury, but the couple was shaken by the close call. -- 2024-09-10 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Picture of the dogs. Social media has been abuzz with outrage as authorities and animal lovers search for an unknown individual who cruelly bound the mouths of 10 dogs with adhesive tape in Soi 12, Pattaya-Naklua Road, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. Some of the dogs were also seen with plastic bottles hanging around their necks. Local residents speculate that the muzzling was due to the dogs’ loud barking and aggressive behavior toward tourists. The images posted online sparked criticism, with many condemning the act as animal cruelty. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the dogs had indeed been walking and lying along the streets with their mouths taped shut. The security guards in the area stated that although these dogs are usually looked after by someone, they remain muzzled day and night, with the tape only removed when someone comes to feed them. The incident has raised concerns among the local community, prompting calls for officials to investigate whether this act violates the *Prevention of Cruelty and Animal Welfare Act 2014 This law protects animals from abuse and neglect, and violators can face up to two years in prison, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both. The public is urging authorities to take swift action and locate the individual responsible for this cruel act. -- 2024-09-10 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Nine passengers were injured in what being considered a lucky escape that there were no fatalities. Rescue teams responded swiftly to free the injured from the wreckage and transport them to the hospital. The crash occurred on the Nakhon-Hua Sai Road in the Suan Luang subdistrict of Chaloem Phra Kiat district. Pol. Lt. Col. The deceased has been identified as Mr. Zhang Xuanjun, 46, a Chinese national and the factory manager. Rescue teams from Kuson Sattha Chaiya Foundation responded swiftly, and the deceased was transported to Surat Thani Hospital for autopsy. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion. Early speculation suggests that a buildup of pressure or combustible gases within the silo may have triggered the blast, but official findings are pending further investigation. -- 2024-09-10 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Neighbour Dispute Over Pets Ends in Double Death and Injury A neighbourhood conflict involving pets took a tragic turn on September 9 when a former military officer shot and killed his neighbour before taking his own life. Picture of crime scene. A neighbourhood conflict involving pets took a tragic turn on September 9 when a former military officer shot and killed his neighbour before taking his own life. The incident left two people dead and another injured. The violent encounter began around 07:30 in Khlong Sam Subdistrict, Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani Province. Authorities responded to reports of gunfire in a residential area. Upon arrival, police found the bodies of Colonel Jaruchat Jarupan, 64, and Saowakul Sasado, 53, near their homes. Jaruchat, a retired army officer, was discovered lying on his back outside his house, a 9mm Sig Sauer P365 pistol by his side. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head, indicating suicide. Saowakul, his neighbour, had been shot multiple times, once in the right hand, elbow, cheek, and twice in the abdomen. The dispute reportedly began six months ago over a disagreement about pets. Jaruchat had been caring for stray cats, while Saowakul owned dogs. On the morning of the incident, a verbal argument escalated when Saowakul insulted Jaruchat, calling him "cripple." After a heated exchange, Jaruchat retrieved a firearm from his home and opened fire. Saowakul's son, Kritin Natwil, 30, who rushed out to check on his mother, was also shot in the arm but survived the encounter. Kritin described hearing his mother arguing with Jaruchat before the shots rang out. He saw her lying wounded on the ground, and when he approached, Jaruchat fired at him as well. Police Colonel Kiattisak Mitprasat, head of Khlong Luang Police Station, stated that the initial investigation indicated a longstanding feud over pets, which escalated into violence. Jaruchat's keeping of stray cats and Saowakul's dogs had led to several altercations between the two households. Following the events, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shootings, but the dispute over the animals remains at the centre of the conflict. The statement in the OP, are the reported comments made by the driver to police, “Mr. Samai explained that he had been driving out of Thung Klom Tan Man Soi 10, along a road near Chak Nok Reservoir. As he approached a three-way intersection, he turned right, only to encounter a motorcycle coming straight towards him, honking aggressively. Startled, he attempted to accelerate and overtake the motorcycle, but the wet, slippery road caused him and his truck to spin out of control” It is not the role of the news team to change the facts of a statement made at the accident scene.

Pictures courtesy of Khaosod. A fire ripped through a row of 15 shops in Soi Lat Phrao 124, Wang Thonglang District, Bangkok, early this morning, destroying several motorcycles and cars and tragically claiming the life of a bedridden man who was unable to escape. The incident occurred at approximately 02:45, when Lt. Phakphol Paiboonsombat, an investigator from Wang Thonglang Police Station, was alerted to the blaze engulfing multiple commercial structures. Firefighters from the Huamark Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the scene with three fire engines, accompanied medical personnel from the Police General Hospital, and volunteers from the Por Tek Tung Foundation. The fire, which spread rapidly due to an explosion of a gas cylinder, caused extensive damage to the zinc-roofed shops that were built closely together. It took firefighters around 60 minutes to bring the flames under control, but not before significant damage had been done. The blaze destroyed 15 shops, with the fire also affecting nearby properties and vehicles. Upon inspection, authorities discovered the charred remains of 38-year-old Mr. Niwat (surname withheld), a bedridden patient who had been trapped inside his family's Isan food stall. The fire also completely destroyed seven motorcycles at a nearby repair shop. In addition to the motorcycles, four cars parked across the street sustained fire damage. Among them were an Isuzu Highlander pickup truck, a green-and-yellow Toyota Altis taxi, a white Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck, and a red Isuzu minibus. Witnesses recounted harrowing moments as they fled the fire. Mr. Peerapong (surname withheld), a 31-year-old fried chicken vendor, described waking up in shock to find smoke filling his shop. Realising that a fire had broken out at a nearby chicken rice stall, he shouted for others to evacuate. Mr. Peerapong, his wife, and their 3-year-old son managed to escape, as did a middle-aged woman from a neighboring shop. However, despite the desperate efforts of the family who owned the Isan food stall, they were unable to rescue their bedridden son, who had been confined to bed for over a year. Lt. Phakphol stated that the land where the shops stood had been rented out by the owner for approximately 3,000-4,000 baht per month. He confirmed that all 15 shops were completely destroyed by the fire, and that the cause is believed to be an electrical short circuit. Authorities are continuing their investigation with the help of forensic experts to confirm the exact cause of the fire. -- 2024-09-09 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe RPReplay_Final1725851700.mp4

Bangkok Conducts Full-Scale Emergency Disaster Drill for 2024 The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), on September 8, in collaboration with various affiliated agencies and partners, conducted a full-scale emergency disaster drill for the year 2024. The exercise was organised by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM). Pictures courtesy of DDPM The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), on September 8, in collaboration with various affiliated agencies and partners, conducted a full-scale emergency disaster drill for the year 2024. The exercise, organised by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), involved the participation of relevant organisations, including the police, fire, military, volunteers, and foundations. The drill was held at Bangkok City Hall 2, located in Din Daeng. Before the exercise commenced, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, Assoc. Prof. Tawida Kamolvej, held a briefing with all participating agencies, offering instructions and guidance. She also inspected the preparedness of the involved units. The exercise scenario simulated a large-scale emergency, with key incidents unfolding in sequence as follows: An electric vehicle (EV) fire broke out in the underground parking area of the Irawat Pattana Building at Bangkok City Hall 2, spreading to multiple parked cars. Building security immediately assessed the situation and reported it to the emergency hotline (199). Firefighters from Huai Khwang and Sutthisan stations were dispatched to the scene. District officers were also notified to manage traffic, and ambulances were dispatched by the Erawan Centre. Several people were trapped in the smoke-filled underground parking area, some suffering from smoke inhalation. The fire intensified, and thick smoke spread to the nearby 37-story Thaninoparat Building. Firefighters established an incident command centre at the scene, while police managed traffic and cordoned off the area. Some people attempted to flee the underground parking area, leading to car collisions on levels 1, 2, and 3. Firefighters rescued those trapped and called for additional support, including more firefighting teams and drones. The Director of the Din Daeng District arrived to oversee the situation, establishing a district-level incident command centre and coordinating rescue efforts with local volunteers. Communication command vehicles and drone teams from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department were deployed to establish a communications network and provide aerial footage to assist in locating missing individuals and assessing the physical structure of the building. The fire continued to intensify, with flames and thick smoke reaching the Thaninoparat Building. Firefighters and rescue teams searched for trapped individuals, many of whom were injured or unconscious due to smoke inhalation. Drones reported the discovery of trapped individuals near the cooling tower, requiring the assistance of high-rise rescue teams and an aerial platform vehicle. The fire was eventually brought under control, and all injured individuals were evacuated. Given the severity of the situation, the district director requested an escalation of the disaster response to level 2, notifying the Bangkok Governor. The Governor of Bangkok arrived at the scene and directed the deployment of additional rescue teams, including heavy machinery and engineers to assess the structural integrity of the building. Specialised equipment was used to clear the underground exits, allowing further evacuation efforts. A city-wide incident command centre was established by the Governor to coordinate the response. Chemical hazard teams assessed air and water quality in the area, while Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams used advanced equipment to locate and extract survivors, who were then treated by medical teams. Following the successful exercise, Mr. Surichai Rawiwann, Director of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, led a debriefing session with team leaders to report the outcomes and challenges to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and City Clerk Wantanee Watthana. The city’s leadership provided feedback on addressing identified gaps and policies for improving disaster response efficiency. Emphasis was placed on using new equipment for rapid incident containment and enhancing coordination between BMA agencies and external partners. Video below shows the deployment of the Bangkok Fire Service specialist long duration (4 hours) breathing apparatus search team and the the high rise rope rescue teams. -- 2024-09-09 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe My Movie.mp4
