  2. Picture from the scene. A fatal family feud over inherited land led to the tragic death of 57-year-old Mr. Phongsak (last name withheld), who was shot and killed by his brother-in-law, Mr. Manoon, aged 62, in Phatthalung province. The incident occurred around 11:50 on September 12. Police from Khuan Khanun Station, together with forensic officers and rescue personnel, were dispatched to the scene in front of a house in Moo 16, Cha Muang sub-district, Khuan Khanun district. The victim was found lying next to his pickup truck, with multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen, right upper arm, and left leg, caused by a long-barreled shotgun. Investigators recovered shotgun pellets and found damage to the house window screen and louvers, evidence of the gunfire. The shooter, Mr. Manoon, the victim's brother-in-law and owner of the house, surrendered to the police shortly after the shooting. According to initial reports, the victim had driven his pickup to the house and was shot by Mr. Manoon as he exited the vehicle. The shooter fired through a window, fatally wounding Mr. Phongsak. Mrs. Sumitra, 67, wife of the shooter, stated that she was doing laundry at the time of the incident and did not hear any argument due to the noise from the washing machine. She only heard a single gunshot and rushed to investigate, only to be stopped by her husband, who confessed, "I've shot your brother." Shocked, she discovered her brother lying dead next to the truck. The dispute stemmed from a long-standing conflict over inherited land. Mrs. Sumitra explained that her family had already transferred ownership of one plot, about 4 rai, to the victim. However, Mr. Phongsak had been pressuring them to transfer a second plot, approximately 7 rai, which had been mortgaged to the bank. Unable to meet his demands, tensions escalated over the years, culminating in the fatal confrontation. According to Mrs. Sumitra, Mr. Phongsak had been threatening them, even warning that if the land was not transferred, he would "lay funeral flowers" for the family. He had been visiting the house repeatedly for three days before the shooting, demanding that the land be transferred. Mrs. Nanta, 49, wife of the victim, expressed disbelief that family members could resort to such violence. She revealed that the disputed 7 rai plot included a house, a palm plantation, and a rubber plantation. The shooter's family had mortgaged the land, leading to severe financial trouble. Her husband had been negotiating to claim his rightful share, intending to sell it to help settle the debt. However, the family conflict remained unresolved, and in a final confrontation, her husband was shot and killed. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. -- 2024-09-13 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

  4. Pictures from responders. A construction site incident occurred at approximately 15:40 on September 12, in Mueang District, Nakhon Sawan province, resulting in the death of one person and significant damage to nearby homes. The large construction crane, part of an ongoing development 19-story condominium and shopping complex project, collapsed suddenly, sending debris crashing onto surrounding properties. The accident occurred in a busy commercial area in central Nakhon Sawan, raising concerns about safety standards at construction sites in populated areas. Eyewitnesses described the horrifying moment when the crane began to topple. "I heard a loud metallic sound and saw the crane tilting. In a matter of seconds, it came crashing down. It was terrifying," said one bystander who was shopping nearby. Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene. One individual, a Cambodian worker was confirmed dead at the site and he was the crane operator. Authorities are assessing structural damage caused to nearby homes. Ten residential properties close to the construction site were damaged by the falling crane, plus a number of vehicles were destroyed or damaged. Fortunately, no additional casualties have been reported among the residents of the affected homes, though several families have been displaced and are being provided temporary shelter and being supported by the construction company. Authorities have cordoned off the area to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the collapse. Preliminary assessments suggest that mechanical failure may have played a role, but further details are still being examined. The crane, which was hoisting materials for the construction building, will be the subject of an in-depth safety inspection by both local authorities and the construction company responsible for the project. Officials from the Nakhon Sawan municipality have promised a thorough investigation and emphasised the importance of holding the responsible parties accountable. -- 2024-09-13 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe
  5. Mae Fah Luang Airport Remains Safe from Flooding, but Access Roads Are Difficult; Commercial Flights Suspended as Airport Assists with Disaster Relief Operations Picture of airport entrance. Flight Lieutenant Somchanok Thiamthiarat, Director of Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport, clarified to the media that despite circulating reports of the airport's closure, the airport itself remains operational. The Mae Fah Luang Airport, located in Ban Du subdistrict, Mueang district of Chiang Rai, is surrounded by floodwaters as the Kok River has overflowed its banks, making access to the airport difficult for passengers. The director emphasised that the airport’s passenger terminal and runway remain unaffected by the flood. Aircraft can still take off and land as normal within the airport grounds. However, due to the difficulty and extended travel time caused by flooding around the area, commercial airlines have opted to cancel their flights. In response to the situation, Mae Fah Luang Airport has been repurposed to serve as a hub for disaster relief operations, assisting in efforts to support those affected by the floods in Chiang Rai province. Despite this, the airport remains capable of handling commercial flights, and efforts are being made to ensure that no passengers are left stranded. Floodwaters are concentrated around the main entrance of Mae Fah Luang Airport, as well as other key access routes. These flooded areas lie along the roads connecting the southern and northern parts of the province, which are divided by the Kok River. 8. Chiang Mai Airport Assists Passengers Affected by Chiang Rai Floods Notices issued by effected airlines Chiang Mai International Airport has stepped in to provide assistance and convenience to passengers impacted by severe flooding in Chiang Rai province. Recent flooding across several areas in northern Thailand, including Chiang Rai, has inundated the areas surrounding Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport. In response, several airlines have cancelled flights to Chiang Rai and introduced measures to help affected passengers change their travel schedules or reroute flights through Chiang Mai International Airport. On September 12, Group Captain Ronakorn Chalermsaenyakorn, Director of Chiang Mai International Airport, convened a meeting with relevant agencies, including the Northern Meteorological Centre, Wing 41, Chiang Mai Provincial Transport Office, and the Airline Operators Committee (AOC), to assess the situation and discuss the impact. The meeting also outlined procedures to facilitate affected passengers. Chiang Mai International Airport has set up a special coordination centre near the domestic terminal’s information counter to assist passengers rerouted to Chiang Mai. The centre provides advice and helps passengers who need to continue their journey to Chiang Rai. Thai Airways has deployed larger aircraft to accommodate passengers from cancelled flights at Mae Fah Luang Airport, while Thai Lion Air has not only increased aircraft capacity but also added two special flights to manage the surge in passengers. Passengers needing to travel onward to Chiang Rai can use public transportation or hire private cars at fixed rates. If the flooding persists or affects more passengers, the Chiang Mai Provincial Transport Office may arrange shuttle services. Chiang Mai Airport has designated parking space at the southern bus parking area near the international terminal for these services. -- 2024-09-12 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Body of Teen Missing For 5 Days Found in Lampang Reservoir A tragic end to a community's search efforts unfolded when the body of 19-year-old boy was found floating in the Huai Bok Reservoir in Serm Ngam district, Lampang province. 12. A tragic end to a community's search efforts unfolded September 11, when the body of 19-year-old boy, Phubet was found floating in the Huai Bok Reservoir in Serm Ngam district, Lampang province. The discovery followed an intensive search, launched after villagers found his motorbike abandoned near the water’s edge. Phubet, a resident of Ban Kiw Huai Boerk, Serm Klang subdistrict, had been missing since the early hours of September 7 and according to his family, he left home at 04:00, but never returned. His unexplained absence prompted an immediate search by worried family members and neighbors, which continued through the following days. On September 9, searchers discovered his motorbike and mobile phone by the reservoir, raising fears about his safety. For three days, local villagers and various rescue units, including the Lampang Rescue Association, Serm Ngam District Rescue Association, and Sawang Nakorn Lampang Rescue Unit, scoured the area. Despite these efforts, Phubet’s whereabouts remained a mystery until September 11, when his lifeless body was spotted floating on the water’s surface. Authorities were promptly alerted, and police, accompanied by medical personnel from Serm Ngam Hospital, were dispatched to the scene. A preliminary examination was conducted before Phubet’s body was transferred to the hospital’s forensic department for a thorough autopsy. The cause of death has yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing. The Huai Bok Reservoir, located approximately eight kilometres from Ban Pong Pradu village, is known for its natural beauty and forested surroundings. The headman of the village described it as a secluded area, accessible only by motorbike, where locals frequently gather wild mushrooms and other forest produce. It was this isolation that may have contributed to the delay in finding Phubet, despite the proximity of his motorbike to the reservoir. Although foul play has not yet been ruled out, the initial investigation leans toward an accidental death. Authorities are looking into the possibility that Phubet may have slipped and drowned while exploring the reservoir. However, they are awaiting the results of the autopsy to confirm or refute this hypothesis. For now, the community can only mourn and wait, hoping for closure as they try to come to terms with the sudden loss of a young life. The police have asked anyone with additional information that could assist in the investigation to come forward. Picture courtesy of The Thaiger. 17. Picture from responders. Police in Samut Prakan were called at 12.20 on September 11, to the scene of a tragic incident at a local school. A female student, 17 years old and a Grade 10 student (name withheld), had jumped from the 4th floor of the school's building, leading to her untimely death. Emergency responders, including the police, doctors from Samut Prakan Hospital, and members of a local charity foundation, arrived on the scene to investigate. The body of the student was found about six metres from the building with severe head injuries. Medical teams cordoned off the area, and the student’s parents were notified. Preliminary investigations revealed that the student had jumped from the 4th floor, approximately 15 metres above the ground, and died instantly upon impact. She had been struggling with depression and had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Bangkok. The school’s director confirmed that the student was a top performer in the Science-Math program and had been attending the school since Grade 7. The student had a history of depression and stress, with ongoing treatment since her early years at the school. The director emphasised that the school had systems in place to support students with mental health issues, including home visits and close coordination with parents. Despite these efforts, the student appeared to be under significant emotional strain before the incident. The parents admitted that financial limitations prevented them from providing certain experiences for their children, such as vacations, which they believed may have contributed to her depression. Furthermore, the student was reportedly bullied at school, which may have worsened her condition. The family had taken her to see a doctor and ensured she was on medication, which she had been consistently taking. Just the day before the incident, her father noticed she seemed stressed while doing homework. He tried to comfort her by buying her snacks, and she appeared to feel better. On the morning of the tragedy, she attended school as usual. Her father had a routine of calling her during lunchtime, but when he tried to call her that day, her phone was turned off. Moments later, the school called him to inform him that his daughter had fallen to her death. 19. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A bizarre incident in Nakhon Ratchasima on September 11, when a 68 year old man under the influence of alcohol climbed a 50 metre high phone tower in a rural village, leading to a dramatic rescue involving his 6-year-old granddaughter, who successfully persuaded him to come down safely. At around 11:00, police officers from the Khon Buri Police Station, led by Deputy Inspector Kriengsak Chaiyasarn, received reports of a man scaling a phone tower in Moo 22 of the Khok Krayai subdistrict. Authorities, including rescue teams from Hook 31 and local officials, quickly responded to the scene. Police Captain Napadol Chuayboon and District Chief Peerapat Teerawatana took command of the situation. Upon arrival, they found a crowd of villagers watching anxiously as the man, identified as Mr. Si Koetmoli, hung precariously near the top of the tower. For over an hour, the crowd shouted and pleaded for him to climb down, but Mr. Si remained unmoved. In a final attempt to resolve the situation, authorities called in Mr. Si's 6-year-old granddaughter, who is currently a kindergarten student. Her gentle coaxing eventually persuaded her grandfather to descend. However, due to the tower's height and Mr. Si’s weakened state after being atop the structure for so long, electrical workers from the Provincial Electricity Authority and rescue teams had to climb the tower and fit him with safety gear and a lowering rope, to ensure a secure and slow descent. Ms. Ananya, Mr. Si’s 29-year-old niece, revealed that her uncle lives with his wife and 17-year-old granddaughter in the village. A habitual drinker, Mr. Si often experiences bouts of erratic behavior, though this was the first time it had escalated to such a dangerous level. She believes that a combination of personal family issues and intoxication drove him to climb the tower. Thanks to the intervention of his young granddaughter and the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams, Mr. Si was brought down safely without injury. -- 2024-09-12 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

  21. Picture courtesy of ThaiRath. A fire erupted on September 11, at the Dynamic Technology Manufacturing (Thailand) Ltd. factory, which is currently under construction in Si Maha Phot district, Prachinburi province. The factory, located on a 161 rai site, has not yet commenced operations when the blaze broke out on the fourth floor of the building, where chemical substances are already being stored. The Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office in Prachinburi (DDPM) received the first report of the fire at 14:00 via the Si Maha Phot district office. Over 20 fire trucks and personnel, plus ambulances and rescue vehicles, from surrounding areas were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters evacuated over 300 workers from the site and rescued 10 individuals who were trapped on the roof, with some responders having to use the site’s hydraulic work platforms to gain access to the higher floors, before a specialist DDPM firefighting aerial ladder platform (ALP) arrived at the scene. No serious inquiries were reported, but 11 people were treated for minor smoke inhalation. All workers were safely accounted for. The firefighting efforts faced significant challenges due to the height of the building and the hazardous chemicals located on the fourth floor. Local officials, including the district chief of Si Maha Phot and senior members of the DDPM, oversaw the operation to ensure the safety of all personnel and the affected area. The fire was finally brought under control at 20:00. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and authorities will continue to assess the damage and losses. Responders video of the fire is below. -- 2024-09-12 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe My Movie.mp4

  23. Picture from responders. A violent storm swept through Ayutthaya on September 11, bringing heavy rains and powerful winds. The storm caused significant damage along Highway 340, which connects Suphanburi to Taling Chan, in Lad Bua Luang District of Ayutthaya Province. The high winds uprooted several trees, one of which tragically fell onto a roadside food stall, killing one person. Emergency responders, at approximately 17:00, rushed to the scene to assess the damage and provide assistance. Local authorities, including police officers and rescue teams, arrived to manage traffic, clear the debris, and investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. The fallen tree crushed a small roti stall that was operating along the roadside. Eyewitnesses reported that the storm hit suddenly, with little warning, leaving people with no time to seek shelter. One witness, who had been driving along Highway 340 when the storm struck, described the moment the tree fell: "The wind was so strong, it was bending the trees. Then, out of nowhere, one of them snapped and crashed down onto the food stall. It was terrifying; there was nothing anyone could do." The identity of the deceased was 9 year old boy, who was helping his grandparents, local vendors that have been at the location for years. The 4 year old grandson also there with his brother narrowly escaped injury. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the exact cause of the tree fall, although initial assessments suggest that the combination of heavy rain and strong winds weakened the tree's roots, leading to the collapse. -- 2024-09-12 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe
