Postal Worker Rescued After Falling into Abandoned Well in Pattaya A postal worker narrowly escaped serious injury after falling into an abandoned well. Picture courtesy of SiamChon A 40-year-old postal worker narrowly escaped serious injury after falling into an abandoned well late night, on September 6. Thanks to the quick actions of a female delivery rider who happened to pass by, the man was saved after spending nearly eight hours trapped in the well. At approximately 09:00, on September 7, the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation's rescue centre in Pattaya received a report of a man trapped in a well near the entrance of Soi Khao Talo 11, Nong Prue, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. Upon receiving the call, rescue volunteers and the Nong Prue municipal prevention unit quickly rushed to the scene. The well, which had been abandoned for years, is located about five metres from the roadside and rescuers found the exhausted man, identified as Somwang Khon Kaen, a postal delivery worker. He was standing waist-deep in water and covered in mud. Rescue teams used a rope and sling, attached to a cherry picker lift, and within ten minutes they successfully hoisted Mr. Somwang to safety. He was given immediate first aid before being transported to a nearby hospital for a medical check up. Mr. Somwang recounted his ordeal, explaining that around midnight, while riding his motorcycle home, he stopped to relieve himself due to intoxication. He parked by the roadside and ran into a patch of grass to urinate but accidentally stepped into the abandoned well. The fall was cushioned by the water and mud at the bottom, preventing serious injury. "I cried out for help for hours, but no one heard me. I tried climbing out but couldn't. I was stuck there for almost eight hours," he said, still shaken from the experience. It wasn’t until the morning when a good Samaritan, a female rider, heard his cries and alerted the authorities. Tuktata Sawatdee, 41, who works as a ride-hailing driver for the Bolt app, was waiting for a passenger in the area when she heard Mr. Somwang’s faint cries for help. "At first, I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from," she explained. "I walked around trying to locate the source of the voice, and when I looked into the well, I was shocked to see a man. Once I gathered myself, I quickly called the authorities." Thanks to the timely intervention of Ms. Tuktata and the rapid response of rescue teams, Mr. Somwang survived the ordeal with minor injuries, calling the incident a "miracle." However, the abandoned well has raised concerns about public safety. -- 2024-09-07 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Picture taken from CCTV. The CCTV footage is below, but edited so it stops just before the collision. An elderly man collecting recyclables was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident on September 6th, at 16:30 on Sukhumvit Road, heading into Chanthaburi city. The incident occurred near the entrance of Soi 2, Plub Pla Subdistrict. The victim, an 80-year-old man with a disability in his right leg, was fatally injured after being struck by a speeding black pickup truck. Despite efforts from rescue teams, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The accident was reported to Chanthaburi City Police by local authorities, and police officers, led by Lt. Kanittha Pongmoo, responded swiftly to the location. Upon arrival, they discovered the man lying motionless with severe injuries to his head, arms, and legs, particularly on his left side. His left arm and leg were both broken, and he had sustained a deep laceration to his head. Eyewitnesses informed the police that the victim, who made a living by collecting and selling recyclables, was attempting to cross the four-lane road to sell items at a local scrap dealer when the tragedy occurred. The truck, described as a black four-door pickup, struck him with full force, sending his body flying before it hit the ground violently. Shockingly, the driver did not stop to check on the victim but instead sped away, heading towards Khlung District in the direction of Trat Province. Further investigations revealed that the victim had to cross the busy road daily as part of his work. Eyewitnesses stated that, at the time of the accident, the elderly man was likely returning home after collecting recyclables. As he was crossing the street, no one noticed the speeding truck until the loud sound of the crash alerted bystanders. When they turned around, they saw the man’s body thrown onto the road while the suspect’s vehicle quickly fled the scene. Fortunately, nearby CCTV cameras captured clear footage of the truck involved, including its license plate number. It was also discovered that the driver briefly returned to the scene while medical personnel were attempting to save the victim’s life, only to flee once again. The authorities have already initiated efforts to track down the suspect. Local police units in the surrounding areas have been notified and are collaborating to intercept the vehicle responsible for the accident. Tragically, it was revealed that the victim was the sole caregiver for his bedridden wife, who is unable to take care of herself. His death leaves her without the support she desperately needs, adding to the gravity of this heartbreaking incident. Local authorities are working to assist the family during this difficult time. -- 2024-09-07 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe RPReplay_Final1725681715.mp4

Miraculous Survival: Lost Fisherman Rescued After 2 Days Adrift, Saved by Floating Debris In a remarkable story of survival, a fisherman who fell overboard was rescued after floating adrift at sea for two days and one night, relying on floating debris to stay alive. Picture as the man is rescued. In a remarkable story of survival, a fisherman who fell overboard was rescued after floating adrift at sea for two days and one night, relying on floating debris to stay alive. The incident, which took place off the coast of Satun province, has been hailed as nothing short of a miracle. On the morning of September 3, Sunthorn Khaosom, 56, a crew member aboard the fishing vessel ‘R. Chai Navi’, accidentally fell into the sea about 10 nautical miles off the coast of Satun. Despite immediate efforts by the vessel’s captain to notify authorities and begin a search, Sunthorn could not be found. It wasn’t until the evening of September 5 that the Third Naval Area Command was alerted by staff at the Koh Bulon Mai Phai National Park in Satun, who reported finding the missing fisherman on the island. The navy then dispatched a team from the Koh Lipe marine security unit to retrieve Sunthorn and bring him safely to shore at the Langku naval station. Waiting for him there were his overjoyed family members, who were overwhelmed with emotion upon hearing of his miraculous survival. Sunthorn recounted his ordeal, explaining how he fell into the sea and saw the boat moving away, despite his attempts to swim back and call for help. “I tried to swim and shout to my friends, but nobody heard me. I had to float to conserve my energy, even as the waves grew stronger,” he said. As hours turned into days, exhaustion set in, and battling fatigue and rough seas, he held onto hope, thinking of his family and relying on his faith. “At one point, I thought of Luang Pho Wat Ban Laem, a revered monk whose amulet I was wearing. I prayed that if I survived, I would ordain as a monk for seven days.” Then, in what Sunthorn described as a miraculous moment, he felt as though someone was helping him stay afloat. Soon after, a floating barrel appeared nearby, giving him something to cling to. “I knew I had to make it home. I kept thinking of my mother and my promise to become a monk. I was determined to survive,” he said. Over the course of the following day, Sunthorn encountered more floating debris that kept him alive, including a sugarcane bottle that helped quench his thirst and a drinking water bottle that provided further relief. Finally, on the evening of September 4, fortune smiled upon him as the waves and wind carried him toward Koh Bulon Mai Phai, where he found refuge. Exhausted but alive, Sunthorn explored the island and found banana trees to stave off his hunger. After spending a night on the island, he was discovered by national park rangers, who notified the authorities. -- 2024-09-07 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Picture captured of the elephant as it was charging. A 58-year-old man is in critical condition after being attacked by a wild elephant in the Sarika subdistrict of Nakhon Nayok province late night, on September 6. The incident took place near a small alley adjacent to Wat Tamnak in Mueang Nakhon Nayok, as the man was standing in front of his house when he unexpectedly encountered the elephant. The Rescue Unit from Ruamkatanyu Foundation’s Sarika division responded swiftly after receiving an emergency call about the attack. The injured man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was immediately rushed to Nakhon Nayok Hospital, where he is receiving urgent medical care. According to initial reports, the wild elephant is a new arrival in the area and is known for its aggressive behavior. The animal had wandered into the residential community, posing a serious threat to local residents. As the victim tried to flee from the charging elephant, he fell, and the elephant attacked him, leaving him with severe injuries. Officials from the Department of National Parks, along with the Sarika elephant response team, have been monitoring the situation closely and are actively working to push the elephant back into the wild, away from populated areas. The authorities have confirmed that the elephant is unfamiliar to the local area and exhibits particularly dangerous behavior. . Wild elephant encounters in rural areas have become increasingly common in recent years due to habitat encroachment and food shortages in forested areas. As elephants lose access to their natural food sources, they often venture closer to human settlements in search of food, leading to dangerous interactions like this one. Local officials are working with the Department of National Parks to ensure the safety of residents while formulating long-term strategies to manage the growing problem of human-elephant conflict. Residents in the Sarika area are being urged to report any sightings of wild elephants to authorities immediately and to avoid traveling alone, particularly in areas near the forest edge where elephant activity is more likely. -- 2024-09-07 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Residents Raise Alarm Over Dangerous Utility Pole in Middle of Road in Sattahip Residents of Na Jomtien have voiced serious concerns over a utility pole that has left dangerously in the middle of a road near a sharp curve behind the local municipal office. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Residents of Na Jomtien in Sattahip District have voiced serious concerns over a utility pole that has left dangerously in the middle of a road near a sharp curve behind the local municipal office. The hazard, which lacks warning signs or proper lighting, has left the community worried about potential accidents. On September 6, local reporters visited the site, located on Soi Na Jomtien 44, connecting to Soi Na Jomtien 46 in Village 3, Na Jomtien Subdistrict. The issue arose after the Na Jomtien Municipality undertook a road construction project in the area, specifically on Soi Na Jomtien 44. The new road, 5 metres in width and 530 metres in length, was part of a concrete road construction project costing approximately 1,700,000 baht, was scheduled for completion within 90 days, starting on May 31, 2024, and due to be completed on August 28, 2024. During the inspection, it was revealed that the utility pole is positioned directly in the middle of the concrete road at a sharp curve. Alarmingly, there are no warning signs or streetlights to alert drivers of the potential danger. Only a few plastic barriers have been placed around the pole, raising fears that both residents and tourists traveling through the area are at significant risk of accidents. Local residents are now urgently calling on the relevant authorities to investigate and resolve the situation before any harm occurs. While the construction of the road has been completed, there has been no clear indication of when or if the pole will be relocated. -- 2024-09-07 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

Driver in Shock as Massive Tree Crushes Car: Miraculous Escape Credited to Amulet A woman had a lucky escape when a massive tree, believed toppled onto her car, crushing it. Miraculously, the driver emerged unscathed and credits her survival to a "Luang Pu Thuat" amulet. Full : https://aseannow.com/topic/1337543-driver-in-shock-as-massive-tree-crushes-car-miraculous-escape-credited-to-amulet/ -
Picture from responders. A 43-year-old woman narrowly escaped what could have been a fatal accident when a massive tree, believed to be nearly 100 years old, toppled onto her car, crushing it almost entirely. Miraculously, the driver emerged unscathed and credits her survival to a "Luang Pu Thuat" amulet, a revered talisman she always carries with her. The terrifying incident occurred in the wake of Typhoon Yagi, which passed through Vietnam and Laos, triggering severe thunderstorms across the northeastern regions of Thailand, including Nakhon Phanom. The heavy rains and strong winds caused several large trees along the banks of the Mekong River to collapse, including the century-old flamboyant tree that fell onto the woman's car. The victim, Ms. Krisana, a contractor who normally resides in another province, was visiting relatives in Nakhon Phanom when the accident took place. She had pulled over on Sunthorn Vijit Road, near the Nakhon Phanom Provincial Police Station, to take a phone call as the rain intensified. Unbeknownst to her, the towering tree next to the road was already on the verge of collapsing. "It all happened so fast. I didn’t even realise that the tree had fallen until it hit the rear of my car," Ms. Krisana recalled, still visibly shaken. "I was in complete shock. If it weren't for the amulet of Luang Pu Thuat from Wat Paknam that I always carry with me, I might not have survived." The amulet, which Ms. Krisana has kept close to her for years, is believed to provide protection and safety to its wearer. Although the car was severely damaged, with the roof crushed, Ms. Krisana miraculously walked away without a single injury. A passing motorcyclist who witnessed the aftermath quickly rushed to help her out of the wreckage. In response to the incident, the Nakhon Phanom Municipality dispatched a team of workers to clear the fallen tree and ensure that the road was safe for traffic. Authorities have also issued warnings to residents and motorists to exercise caution, especially around areas with large, aging trees that may be at risk of falling due to deteriorating root structures. "We are urging the public to avoid parking near large trees during heavy rains and strong winds, as these conditions increase the likelihood of trees collapsing," a municipal spokesperson said. "Many of these trees are over 100 years old, and their roots are weakening with age, making them hazardous during storms." As for Ms. Krisana, the municipality is reviewing her case for possible compensation. Local officials noted that regulations allow for compensation in instances where natural disasters or public infrastructure, such as trees, cause damage to life or property. For now, Ms. Krisana is simply grateful to have survived what could have been a deadly accident, attributing her survival to a combination of luck and the protection offered by her cherished amulet. "Cars can be replaced," she said, "but life is irreplaceable. I'm just thankful to be alive." -- 2024-09-07 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe
