  1. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A man believed to be in his 40s or 50s was found dead and bloated in a disused water pit near the old railway staff quarters in Udon Thani, sparking fears among local homeless residents who believe the site may be cursed. Emergency services were alerted early on 2 June after a homeless individual, who had been living in the disused housing compound near the railway station, spotted the body floating face-down in the water. Police investigators, rescue personnel from the Udon Thani Tham Foundation and forensic staff from Udon Thani Hospital quickly arrived at the scene, located in the Nong Lek community area next to the train tracks. The deceased man, known only by the name “James,” had been seen frequently around the railway compound but was not known personally to the residents. He was found in a shallow water pit in front of the now-abandoned staff housing, scheduled for demolition. Initial inspections found no signs of a struggle or suspicious items at the scene. The body was recovered and sent to Udon Thani Hospital’s forensic unit for formal identification and post-mortem examination. Authorities are attempting to locate the man’s family to claim the body. One homeless resident who lives nearby told investigators that James had been seen just the day before walking around the area. He speculated that the man may have slipped and fallen into the pit during the night, as the body was not visible when residents came to draw water earlier that day. Another long-term resident, known as “Pee Phen,” who has lived in the area for over seven years, claimed that she often hears eerie splashing sounds at night, as if someone were playing in the water. She also reported glimpsing strange shadowy figures near the pit. According to her, the pit has long been regarded with suspicion and she believes it may be haunted by spirits, a belief rooted in Thai folklore. “I’ve always felt a strange energy here,” she said. “Sometimes I see something flash by, like a presence. The elders used to say there are spirits in these waters.” While authorities have yet to confirm the cause of death, the story has sparked renewed local fears about the supposedly haunted location, to what appears, for now, to be an accidental death. 3. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A teenage boy was left seriously injured in the early hours of 2 June, after a firearm exploded in his hands while he and a group of friends were recklessly experimenting with a gun in Bueng Kan province. The incident occurred at approximately 01:30 in Ban Pa Faek, Phon Charoen district. According to a video shared by the Facebook page “Local News Bung Kan” and reposted by “Yak Dang Deaw Jad Hai Return Part 6,” a group of 4–5 teenagers were seen taking turns firing a gun when disaster struck. As the third boy in the group attempted to fire the weapon, the gun unexpectedly exploded, throwing him to the ground and causing severe injuries. The disturbing video shows the victim writhing in pain on the ground while others in the group rush to his aid. Due to the severity of his injuries and the lack of appropriate medical facilities in Bueng Kan, the victim was urgently transferred to Udon Thani Hospital for advanced treatment. The incident serves as a stark warning about the dangers of mishandling firearms. Authorities and community leaders are urging parents to educate and closely supervise their children to prevent such life-threatening accidents. Police have yet to release details about the type of weapon involved or whether any charges will be filed in connection with the incident. An investigation is ongoing. 5. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Violence erupted in Rueso district, Narathiwat Province, when unknown assailants launched a coordinated attack involving a car bomb and gunfire, resulting in the death of a paramilitary ranger. At around 20:10 on 1 June, a group of armed militants detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) targeting a civilian vehicle and simultaneously opened fire with automatic weapons on a security checkpoint located in front of the operations base of Ranger Company 4614, situated in Ban Ponoh, Moo 6, Suwari sub-district, Rueso district. Security forces stationed at the checkpoint responded with gunfire, engaging the attackers in a firefight. During the exchange, one ranger was critically wounded. He was immediately transported to Rueso Hospital but succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The victim was identified as Volunteer Ranger Maitree Budda. In the wake of the attack, authorities established multiple roadblocks and checkpoints throughout the area to search for the perpetrators, who are believed to have fled into nearby territory. Local residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons, vehicles, or objects to authorities immediately via the 1341 or 191 emergency hotlines, both of which operate 24 hours a day. The incident underscores ongoing tensions in Thailand’s southern border provinces, where separatist violence continues to pose a threat to both security forces and civilians. An investigation into the identities and motives of the attackers is currently underway. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-03.

Two drivers employed by a private parcel delivery company have been arrested in Kanchanaburi province after being caught transporting a massive haul of contraband cigarettes, totalling 1,434 boxes, in delivery trucks. Authorities say the documents found with the shipments clearly identify both the sender and intended recipients, facilitating further investigations. Acting on a tip-off about an imminent smuggling operation, police and military officials set up a joint checkpoint at the Thong Pha Phum tri-junction in Moo 1, Tha Khanun subdistrict. Reports indicated that contraband cigarettes were being transported in two white and grey Isuzu D-Max delivery trucks with enclosed cargo beds, using the cover of night to avoid detection. At approximately 23:00 on 31 May, the trucks were intercepted as they travelled from Sangkhla Buri towards central Kanchanaburi. Upon inspection, the drivers, identified as Mr Witthawat, 28, from Ratchaburi’s Pak Tho district and Mr Panuphun, 23, from the same province, fully cooperated with officials. The first truck, driven by Mr Witthawat, was found to contain 534 boxes of various foreign cigarette brands, amounting to 5,340 packs, as well as 10 packs of Burmese cigarettes (each containing six cartons). The second truck, driven by Mr Panuphun, carried 900 boxes, equivalent to 9,000 packs, of foreign cigarettes. In total, authorities seized 1,434 boxes of untaxed cigarettes that bore no excise stamps, confirming them as illegal goods. Both drivers claimed ignorance regarding the contents of their cargo, stating they were simply performing their duties as parcel delivery drivers. They explained that they had picked up the packages from their company’s warehouse in Sangkhla Buri and were en route to another facility in Ayutthaya province for delivery. They insisted they had no knowledge of the illicit nature of the contents. Officers from Thong Pha Phum Police Station, along with local military and border patrol units, took immediate steps to seize the contraband. Authorities confirmed that paperwork accompanying the packages included full sender and recipient details, which would significantly aid the investigation. The seized goods are being held as evidence while police work to identify and prosecute the individuals responsible for organising the smuggling operation. Officials stated they are confident that arrests of the main culprits will follow soon. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-03.

  9. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A well-known rubber plantation owner lost his life in a single-vehicle accident in Phatthalung province on the evening of 1 June. At approximately 21:45, Pol. Lt. Winich Phakdeewanit, deputy investigation officer at Bang Kaeo Police Station, received a report of a fatal road crash involving a pickup truck that had veered off the road and overturned into a roadside ditch in Moo 7, Khok Sak sub-district, Bang Kaeo district. Police and rescue workers rushed to the scene, where they discovered an overturned Isuzu D-Max pickup truck, registered in Bangkok, lying on its side in a water-filled ditch. The driver, identified as 45-year-old Mr. Apiweer Benjakul, was found crushed beneath the vehicle and submerged in the water. Mr. Apiweer was a prominent figure in the region, known for being one of the largest rubber plantation owners in the area. Emergency crews used a crane to lift the vehicle and recover the body. Preliminary investigations suggest that Mr. Apiweer lost control of the vehicle while navigating a bend in the road, causing it to skid off the road for more than 20 metres before overturning. According to family members, Mr. Apiweer had just left home for a personal errand and had been in contact with his wife shortly before the crash occurred. Police staed a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause. The body has been sent to Bang Kaeo Hospital for further examination. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-03.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered the lifeless body of a Thai man believed to be between 60 and 65 years old. The victim had suffered severe head trauma, with both legs broken and died at the scene. No identification documents were found on the body. A damaged bicycle lay nearby, along with a white Honda HR-V with Bangkok licence plates. The vehicle’s front was crumpled and the driver’s side windscreen shattered. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Initial investigations suggest that the driver was en route to Sattahip with his family when the victim attempted to cross the road with his bicycle and was struck with significant force. The driver claimed he was unable to brake in time. The deceased’s body was transported to a Pattaya Hospital for storage while police work to identify the victim and contact his family. 21. UPDATE Indian Students Injured as Shuttle Bus Crashes into Utility Pole in Bangkok Pictures courtesy of Amarin. Eleven people were injured, two seriously, when a shuttle bus transporting Indian students from Suvarnabhumi Airport to the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) suffered brake failure and crashed into a utility pole on Phahonyothin Road. The incident occurred at 11:08, near the Khor Por Or (KPO) intersection in northern Bangkok. The bus, carrying approximately 45 Indian students, was en route from the airport when it reportedly lost braking control while descending an off ramp, near the Kaset Subdistrict Office intersection. According to eyewitnesses and preliminary reports, the driver struggled to control the vehicle after the brakes failed. Upon approaching the intersection, where a car was stopped at a red light, the driver swerved left in an attempt to avoid a collision. This manoeuvre caused the bus to strike a utility pole and end up against a tree, causing significant damage. Two of the injured, a local tour guide and a student, are reported to be in serious condition. All injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The bus driver confirmed to authorities that the vehicle ran on diesel and not compressed natural gas (CNG), ruling out any gas leak risk at the scene. Emergency responders and traffic police quickly cordoned off the left lane of the road to manage traffic and facilitate the removal of the bus. An investigation into the mechanical failure and safety compliance of the vehicle is currently underway. Meanwhile, officials from the transportation department have been dispatched to inspect the wreckage and assess potential risks for similar transport services. The crash follows a string of recent transport incidents, raising fresh concerns over vehicle safety and maintenance standards for buses serving both locals and tourists. 23. Picture courtesy of Workpoint A foreign national has ignited debate both online and on the streets of Patong after being filmed urinating in public while walking along a road in the busy Soi Saensabai area, opposite the famous Bangla Road. The incident has drawn widespread criticism on Thai social media, where a video clip and accompanying messages condemning the man’s behaviour quickly went viral. The footage shows the tourist nonchalantly exposing himself and urinating as he walks, sparking concern and disgust among locals and fellow visitors. The clip was originally shared by a local resident who witnessed the act, along with a caption reading: “Look at this! #UnacceptableTourist. Tourist police, please take action. Location: Soi Saensabai, Patong, Phuket!” The post prompted a flood of angry comments, with many expressing disappointment over the perceived decline in the quality of international visitors. Local journalists visited the area shortly after the video emerged and spoke to residents and business owners. They confirmed that the man is a familiar sight in the neighbourhood and has reportedly displayed inappropriate behaviour on multiple occasions. Despite warnings from members of the public, he has shown no willingness to change his conduct. “This kind of behaviour isn’t just disrespectful to Patong residents, it’s disrespectful to Thailand as a whole,” said Ms Rujira, a local vendor in Soi Saensabai. “It damages the image of our tourism industry in the eyes of other visitors.” Residents are now calling for urgent action from relevant authorities, particularly the Tourist Police and Patong Municipality, to enforce the law and hold the individual accountable. “There are more and more low-quality tourists these days, especially those coming under the free visa policy. They’re not helping the tourism sector, they’re causing problems,” Ms Rujira added. As of now, there has been no official response or action reported from the Tourist Police or other responsible agencies. The community, however, remains firm in demanding that authorities act decisively to prevent similar incidents. Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-06-02.
