My mobiles, regardless wich brand, never broke down really. A new battery here in Thailand 4-500bht for an Iphone. My last exchange was because of my bank in europe. Wasn't able to log on to yme-banking anymore, as the IOS didn't update (too ols device). But the cost every 6-8 years for a new mobile is in the budget. No big worries. I worked in quite a few of them, and it's unbelievable from how many different countries worldwide scientists are working there. Specialized machine building is also a important export value. A small anecdote: Did you know that all Espresso machines from Starbucks worldwide are produced in Switzerland? Swiss economy has had already quite a few shock moments in the past. But the economy always managed it. And all those that survived got better and stronger. The biggest issue that Switzerland has, it doesen't belong to the EU. In principle, Switzerland is a transshipment point for gold. Thousands of tons of gold come to Switzerland, are refined in refineries and then exported abroad. However, it is important to note that in relation to the figures, the industry creates little jobs, and the value creation is manageable. Switzerland produces class, not mass.

Since about 20 years I use a notebook (Lenovo) running on windows and a mac as desktop. I give them both around 8 years and then just change the hardware -> buy a new one. I once went through changing the harddisk on my notebook because it didn't start up anymore correctly. I was lucky and was able to save all of the datas, had to build out the harddisk an connected with an adapter onto my external storage device. Since then I make on my Mac as also on my Windows Notebook every month a full backup onto external harddisks. It's woth it, but one only realizes that when the tool (regardless if Mac or Win) you use every day suddenly says "nada".

How do you think reserch is done next to government funding? Thousands of small labs worldwide, (Europe - especially Switzerland have the most) are funded by risk capital from non-government parties. They only do research - if they make a hit - they can sell it to big pharma. Lots of those labs focus only on one thing. After maybe two years they have to show their results. If they seem worth it, the risk-capital givers give another slice to go on. If not, the lab-team starts somewhere else on a different research. This is reality, since years going like that. Research costs alot - but the chance to make "the hit" can bring alot of money. Europe and Canada welcomes every good scientist from the US. And they will be gone for the US.
