Indonesia has an army?
Probably one of the largest in the world !
And one not to be messed with!

Seeing people toss their trash on the ground and in the canals is heartbreaking.
It's just what low-educated and low class folks do.... there are lots of Thais with the sense not throw trash everywhere, but unfortunately they aren't the majority...
Trashy low class folks in Japan chuck trash everywhere too. I have seen that decline in the last 20 years, but it's still a problem.
Lots of trashy folks in the U.S. just chuck their trash into the wind or out their cars as they drive down the road. Again, awareness of this being a bad thing has started to grow.... the world is waking up to this. It's not a Thai thing, it's an awareness thing.
I disagree re the low class or low educated folks being the main offenders. Some of the worse offenders I have seen was when I taught at one of a chain of private bilngual schools on the outskirts of Bangkok. These students and parents are the so called hi-so. On many occasions I was astounded to witness these hi-so parents spoon feed their kids in the back of their flash new cars and then finish up by sweeping/throwing all the left over garbage, even used plastic nappies, out of the cars into the car park in full view of passing students, parents and teachers without any shame.
However, I was surprised the other day, while parked on a busy road in Udon, to see a baker's van (Farm Fresh?) swerve to the side of the road and park next to a bin whereupon the passenger side window opened and a couple of bags of rubbish were tossed in the bin before taking off again. I think things are changing. My wife was a guilty culprit when I first met her, even though she loves nature, but now she actually speaks up before me and teaches the kids in the extended family to put things in the bin and to not burn plastic.

A horrible crime to be sure but one wonders about how quickly the motive appears to be known and reported prior to anyone even being apprehended.
Agreed, I am sure I saw the word "suspected" somewhere in the article??

I wanted white ceilings in my new house with the walls a light grey (Dulux Twilight). After I saw the unbelievable mess the builders were making trying to cut-in I drove 1 1/2 hours to Udon to buy more grey so they could paint it all same colour. The result was still very good but would have preferred a flat finish for the ceiling. Semi gloss showed up all the joints and imperfections in the ceiling (they weren't very good at plastering either
) whereas flat does the opposite.

I had the same problem in a Bangkok rental a few years ago. Bought a top loader thinking it had a pump like back home but it didnt. The outlet was incorporated in the side of a cupboard 30cm above floor and being a rental we couldn't modify it. Good hearted neighbour came up with a solution by welding up a steel stand 30cm high to stand the washing machine on. Worked just fine except the wife had to stand on one of those little plastic stools to unload it.

(BBC) American officials have ordered some overseas airports with direct flights to the US to intensify screening of electronic devices.
Ordered?? Not asked?? The sheer arrogance!!

We were told they had to take naps because they need a break through the long day otherwise they would be too sleepy in the afternoon to learn or do their work. The school only brought nap time in for KG3 (6 y/olds) during the last year I was teaching. I had more kids dozing off in the afternoon (after napping) that year than any previous.

Go and see the headmaster with the photos and tell him/her that if it ever happens again the police will be called.
If it happens again, you got kids,i doubt it.
You dont read so good eh?

Difficult to imagine this was done in full view of the other students, but that's exactly how we were caned back in the 70s in Oz. We even had one psycho who used to get a run up - cricket style - from outside the classroom. Hurt like hell in Winter - lots of hands being rubbed feverishly the morning after a maths test and our French teacher didnt even restrict himself to caning people at the start of class - his specialty was rapping you on the knuckles with a piece of wood the mad bastard carried expressly for that purpose. Sadistic mofos, but any new teacher who didnt accept that 'discipline' was part of the curriculum was clearly seen as a lesser being. Interesting times.
Apologies to any Monty Python fans out there, but tell that to young kids today and they wont believe you.
Geez Mrworldwide, we must have gone to the same school, W.A.? . I was provided with exactly the same kind of "education" but back in the 60's. Christian Brothers college but their lay teachers were just as bad.
Hey, the teacher with the run-up bowling style, was he a "Mr Walsh" by any chance? Mr Walsh had the same style, but specialised in writing a cross on your butt with chalk and then belting the cross until it wore off completely!
Action needs to be taken over this crime. Bring the press in big time!
-
My advice is go to the police and invite the local press along too, that should get things moving.
Making a kid shit scared of getting it wrong again is not going to improve his maths, it will just make them withdrawn and want to skip school.
Waiting for the teacher at the school gates is just sinking to his level.
Very true Basil. There is that TV show in the morning, channel 3 I think, wife tells me he is an ex lawyer?, he always shows a lot of injustices like this, and he really gets the attention of the right people . Something needs to be done to try to prevent this from happening in the future to many others too.
Good luck.

I agree, I have used google map with highlighting, arrows etc.
Letter from bank and bank book must be within 24 hours. I had to do again one time because letter dated and bank book updated on Friday arvo but applied on Monday morning. Same day is best. They have also sent me off to deposit 100 baht in the a/c to be sure.
We also had to have a (1) witness, and letter from the village head along with copies of his ID and blue book.
Of course this all my differ from officer to officer, office to office,
They may also want to make a house visit and request tea or fuel money.
Best to be prepared for anything.
Good luck.

I'm also told that at the amphur in Bangrak a lot of red tape (such as witnesses) is not required.
-
My experience some amphurs (eg Minburi) wont do it as dont know how to handle farang, will just give you the run around. Went to Lak Si, no witnesses, no probs, boss lady just wants money in envelope, we gave 300 baht.
Actually funny thing happened to us there. Farang in line before us and head lady there got into arguement as he tried to bribe her into providing paperwork to take wife's children from previous marriage out of country. Farang got angry, mainly with wife coz she said a bribe would suffice and it didnt turn out that way. Head lady (a real stuck up bitch) gave him all his paperwork back but in the confusion gave our application and envelope as well (she was very disorganised with paperwork scattered all over her desk.) and farang and wife stormed out still arguing. We were called up next the sh..t hit the fan as they couldnt find our documents. They couldnt deny receiving it because it has to be checked by lady on front counter first and she passes it on to boss. This counter lady is the one who informs you that a "donation" to the boss is required. Anyhow boss lady now turns the story around to save face and says that the farang grabbed all the paperwork, it wasnt her fault and basically says all farang are trouble. She is really pissed off now as all the documents have to be done again and she has lost her envelope.
After an hour all is well and we are married and out the door. Five minutes later we get a phone call from a taxi driver who informs my wife that he has our paperwork and an envelope of money left in the back of his taxi. Thought it looked important, found wife's phone number in it and wanted us to know he had left it at front counter of Foreign Affairs Chaeng Wattana where he had just dropped the irrate farang and and his wife! We got all our documents and money back and he refused to accept a reward,
So karma and good honest taxi drivers in Bangkok do exist!

What I never understand is why you have to ask for a price. Wouldn't a clearly written sign on the produce make everybody's life so much easier. Since the invasion here of 7-11s my Thai friends will never use a old fashioned mom-pop store where they have to ask and negotiate and more often still end up paying more than at 7-11.
Failure to price goods is an indication that price will vary between customers. I avoid all places like that.
Agreed Keesters, If I walk into a shop and the goods dont have prices on them, I walk straight back out again and go to the next one that does.

Good on her. Wifey and I went to a dinosaur museum up near Udon a while back and they had a sign showing different entry prices for Thais and farang....cant rememeber price but roughly double for farang....showed my teachers ID and explained how I work here and pay tax but the answer was still full price. Politely said no thanks and walked out....while I admit I'm a miser that is not the issue. I believe while I pay tax in this country I should get local price.

I think so many of us find it easy to lay much blame with government. But, I think we fail to acknowledge that the core problem is with the entire society. The politicians are but a reflection of the nation's character.wouldnt be surprized if it is the truth but it just goes to show how much of it is going into peoples pockets/bank accounts as it is certainly not getting through to the schools. Like most financial deals in this country the people suffer as the top dogs get to pocket most of the money, another reason Thailand needs to have honest government and open financial policies so the people can see exactly where akll this money is going..
When one puts all the big stats together, a rather embarrassing and grim picture of Thai society becomes clear.
It's a complete mess.
PaullyW I agree with you but would like to add what I have gleaned from 9 years experience as a teacher in Thailand working for a large chain of schools.
According to what I have heard, and others may correct me if I'm wrong, the Ministry of Education is the only government department that does not have to declare its financials ie what comes in and what goes out....and where??...that raises my eyebrows.
The school I worked for, and it was the same with the others in the chain, put a lot of money, time and effort into trying to impress the parents with full-on activities. An example was sports day where for every day for three weeks prior to the event, cheering practice consumed the last period. So each child lost 15 hours of education just to practice cheering. At the same time no real sporting events were actually held on "Sports Day" and thus no actual sporting practice. Most of the days events were parades where boys and girls would be dressed up to compete against other parents' daughters and sons. In fact one year the parents complained that their team's uniforms where not sexy enough....and we are talking about kindergarten here!! As you say PaullyW, its the society.
Another example was an obviously autistic child who spent all day sitting under his desk playing with a cup of water or whirling the wheel of an old cassette tape. While he did no actual work all his workbooks were done and up to date by the Thai teachers (not their wish). When I suggested that this child needed special treatment, the head coordinator advised me that they had had meetings with his parents and they had refused to move him because they believed he was getting a better education now than he would get elsewhere!!?? The Thai teachers, who sympathised with me, later explained to me quietly that the parents only concern was that he went home every day wearing the same uniform as the other Hi-So kids. Again, its the society.
On that same note, the neighbours used to ask my wife what school I taught at. When she told them they would remark that it was a very very good school.....but not for learning!! So what makes it a very very good school then?? Hi-So kids go there I suppose?
Many times I have had very bright students who seem to excel at everything but once they are noticed they are utilised by the school to be the main characters in the never ending parent impressing activities put on by the school. Eventually these children fall behind because they are being forever pulled out of normal classes to practice for the activities. Most parents dont seem to mind because they want their children up the front on stage. In fact many parents complain if their children are not up front...talented or not. Sooner or later the bright students parents, or I should say those who place education before Hi-So bu###hit, pull their kids out of the school but rather than confront the school with the truth the story is always that they have moved to another area, or some other bu##s#it line. And yet everyone knows that they still live just down the road. Thailand/Thais will never move on until they learn to confront. Forget the mai pen rai, say what you really feel, that way people will think twice next time. As you say PaullyW, it's the society.
IMHO Thailand's educational spending may be the highest in the world but it is not spent on education. In fact my school spent very little on education. Every year the Thai teachers are forced to work more and more hours and all teachers are expected to pay for more and more resources. An example was the computer rooms which appeared to be well stocked but most of them didn't work because the school would not pay for their upkeep. They looked good in the school's glossy album but in fact most teachers were forced to buy their own laptops/pc's because the school insisted that all lesson plans, worksheets, results etc be prepared in electronic form. Exam papers were only provided in sufficient numbers to cover one class only, the students had to put their answers on their own paper. Then the exam papers were collected and handed out to the next class. No one failed because the teachers were forced to keep retesting until the student passed. The students know the score that eventually the teacher will tire or run out of time to retest so the marks are altered to a pass level.
In my school the children were not students, they were customers, or more correctly, the parents were. Tell a parent the truth and you lose a customer, you lose income. Without income you cant keep expanding by building more schools. Head office expects each school to bring in a calculated income, and it is taken from each school first, leaving the schools to find their running costs whichever way they can. They fine the teachers 500 baht if a light or air conditioner is left on. They especially like the lazy or tardy teachers. Mostly farang as the Thais cannot afford to be late or absent. And I would like to emphasise the lazy farang are the minority, most I have worked with care about their students and work very hard. If you are a good teacher you are rewarded with more work because you are reliable. If you are reliable you get a pay raise each year and they really resent that and try to find ways out of it. The lazy ones get away with murder and are allowed to be that way because they are deducted every time they are late or absent. One guy I had the misfortune to work with bragged about having 26 absent days in one semester while you were only permitted 5 days with a doctor's certificate. He maintained this level of "reliability" for 8 years before they finally got rid of him and only because the other teachers were beginning to openly complain. He was still given a month's pay to leave 'quietly". A good teacher resigning on good terms after 9 years was given nothing, not even a thank you or a goodbye.
I could go on forever but wont. As you say PaullyW, it's the society. Most parents know what goes on, its difficult not to notice. But as long as most parents put what appears to be status before education nothing will change. This country needs accountability....from top to bottom. The parents with the real status in this country don't send their kids to Thai schools, they send them to Singapore, Malaysia, Australia etc to get a real education.

Hahahahahah!!! If its a big school or part of a chain I wouldn't worry the slightest. I worked for a large school/chain that was inspected a couple of years ago. Out of approx 40 foreign teachers (long noses...not Filipinos) there was only 3 of us that had work permits. Most of the remainder had Buckley's chance of ever getting one and a couple had problems spelling their own names let alone stop their knuckles from dragging on the ground when they walked!!
Yes the inspectors seemed to be more interested in lesson plans, lunches, and envelopes. Good luck anyhow!
-
Contact the labor department, explain the situation, they will help you, they are not nice to employers who are wrong!
Although this procedure can take some time and you don't have time, because when you are fired your workpermit and visa are terminated and you have to leave the country in 8 days.
It's a very common trick of employers here to make work so miserable for you that you leave, happens all the time at all levels.
If you want to stay here you better find a new job soon in stead of waiting for it to happen.
If I am not mistaken or things have changed, you have to cancel your work permit and visa via a letter from employer and then have only 24 hours to leave the country.

In one or both of your ears? Beware, the style can make a difference and obviously already distinguishes between a decent person and a fraudster. Modern world is complicated and even if you are not Australian you can be doomed just by your appearance.
interesting observation.."doomed by your appearance''
Share the info please re; one earing in each ear and two earings in one ear..which option is better/worst?
If it is obvious as you say, that the style can make a difference between a decent person and a fraudster, i want to know the facts so i can easily spot the fraudster..and the decent person.
Two in one ear, but I get your sarcasm Richard
+1 ....
but please TF..be specific mate..you didn't answer the question...Two in one ear.yes?..better or worse?Decent or fraudster?
I need to know as i have met both types/styles lately..who is the good guy????
Who can i trust? Is the decent guy really a fraudster ,but wearing earrings differently just to appear decent.
Or is the fraudster gaining my trust by appearing to be a decent guy by simply changing his style??
From what i can see these styles of earirngs wearings are apparently not a reliable method of determining ones moral character ...
If I cut off my left hand I have my right hand left ......right?

I wear two earrings (sorry no tats).

"Red-shirt co-leader Jatuporn Promphan told the press yesterday that this decision was made in order to bring red-shirt supporters to the capital from upcountry so as to protected Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's elected government."
Q. Do they need to bring their own can of petrol or will it be supplied on site this time?
"(2) What time is the march?"
A. Thai time: Strictly anytime between 3.00pm yesterday and 4.00am Wednesday or when they say 'we go now!' so please be punctual.
