I don't know why people always compare Thailand with Philippines.

Why not other countries like Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and even China.

Speaking for myself I have never been to the phils but am thinking about it.

Of those you mentioned I thought Vietnam was OK, cheapenough but a bit bland. Myanmar briefly - shithole but others may differ. Cambodia OK just not quite Thailand. Never fancied China. Been to Laos many times always enjoyed it, nearly moved there, but kast time it had changed and just wasn't the same.

    Your turn.

Apologies for the slow reply. I would echo most of what Maejo has said and Barretto is definitely the place to be if it is nightlife and food geared to Westerners  you are looking for. I personally think the beach is average and whilst i have swum in the sea i am far from convinced about it's cleanliness. If you like to swim there is a very nice 50m pool at the Wild Orchid Hotel, you pay 500 pesos to use it but you can then chose any drinks or food off the menu for the same amount. The majority of the bars on the strip are 'girlie bars' but standard bars can be found as well. Beer and women are probably as cheap as you are likely to find anywhere. Once you know where to go there are quite a few places that serve up very good food which is a big plus over other places i have been to in Phils. In addition to those mentioned by Maejo, DaBar is very good for food, Drydens is pretty good and Angels Bakery is very clean and pleasant place for breakfast or lunchtime snack. Shambolis is a small eat in place  good for pizzas and other pasta dishes (all the bars use them for ' delivery). I have only stayed in a few different hotels in Barretto but i think the best value for money one is the Coffee Shop, Roof Garden (opposite Arizona)  This place also has a restaurant which is very popular with the locals, food is OK and pretty good value.

Many thanks for your time and trouble gruff and maejom.

I think you would find by statistical analysis the roof over their head is either provided by a male partner, or both are paying off the mortgage. Most of the women who own the roof over their head outright achieved it with the help of a divorce lawyer.

Didn't say anything about owning it, just said that by and large they had one. Would not argue with your points.

  4. I don't know why anyone would change from their regular 5%abv to Singha Light 4.5, it is possibly a bit cheaper. But I don't see it in places that didn't carry it before. Round here 3 used to keep it, now only 1 does and I don't see him selling much.

No I do not see the 3.5 being re-introduced, Tiger light still being the only alternative and I do not know of many here that keep it. Plenty in Bangkok and Pattaya though.

I have spent some period of time in Manila, Puerto Galera, Subic Bay, Cebu City, Bohol and have even ventured to General Santos in the deep South of Mindanao. Obviously everybody has different preferences for where they want to live from rural to urban but i have not felt threatened in any of the places above and across the board people are generally friendly. The number of armed security guards does seem quite alarming but i don't relate armed security guards to a place being 'dangerous'.

How do you rate the Subic area, bars, food, females, accomm??

I’ve been back in Britain for the last month and will return to Thailand in 10 days and  I haven’t been much bothered about the loss of my favourite Thai beer.

So may I ask people who were drinking the 3.5% alcohol Singha Light before what they have switched to since the alcohol content went up to 4.5%?

    • - did you stick with the new, less light Singha Light?
    • -did you switch to another lightish beer like Tiger Light?
    • -did you take to watering down the beer with something like lemonade or ice to reduce its strength?
    • -did you give up on Light beers and change to a standard strength 5% beer, but maybe a lowish calorie content one like San Mig Light?
    • -did you give up drinking beer?

I’m curious as perhaps somebody has found a good alternative to the old beer and they’d let us share it?

    Thanks.

    1) No

    2) Would do if the bars here sold it.

    3) Have mixed it with soda water a few times, will definitely do it again.

    4) Reverted to Leo but the 5% left me rough in the morning after a few.

    5) No but I am definitely drinking less.

Curious? Me too. If I was in Bangkok or Pattaya I would pay the price for English Bitter (well I have done already) with the reduced amount I am drinking lately the difference in price is bearable.

The brewery no longer seem to respond to emails asking how sales of the new compare to sales of the old and when

they plan on re-introducing the 3.5%.

    Anyone else??

I am told by those that should know, that there is little transliteration possible between Thai and English, hence the Farang/Falang argument.

I also need to get a life apparently and drink less

Not an argument at all just an observation about the number of different spellings I see, farang/falang/falung/ferlung/ferlang etc.

And the bit about getting a life and drinking less was aimed at myself. Self-deprecating humour is not a common feature of TVF so I understand your confusion.

have plenty of Thai friends from all walks of life. Felangs - not so much. Strange that, innit?

    GFY.

Strange? No, no surprise at all.

I keep meaning to start a list of all the different spellings of farang I see. Not too many different pronunciations about though. Yes I know, get a life, drink more etc.
