  3. Tesco's strong figures were boosted significantly by a strong performance in Asia. Sales rose 8.8 per cent to £35.5bn

    and

Its Asian business saw sales rise 11.9 per cent to £5.6 billion, with profits up 18.3 per cent to £292 million, driven by strong growth in China and Thailand.

at the end of the day, they are still selling there products in Thailand at the same profit margin as in the uk, BUT, they only need to pay there employees a 10 th of what they pay them in the uk, plus they dont have to but up with Refunds, Price Cuts ( as they do in the UK , IE battle with the other supermarkets )

  4. Shoppers are changing their habits, becoming more prudent and wasting less it was claimed today as supermarkets announced their half year results.

The UK sales performance - Tesco's worst for 20 years - highlights the squeeze on consumers' spending power as wages fail to keep up with rising prices.

The supermarket saw a 0.9 per cent fall in sales of electronics and entertainment products but overall the group recorded a 6.2 per cent rise in underlying profit to £1.9bn in the first half of the year.

Sainsbury's revealed that like-for-like sales increased by 1.9 per cent in the 16 weeks to October 1 - the same rate as in the previous quarter. Unlike Tesco, its figures include VAT.

  5. Good Thai girls in Pattaya and Jomtiem that speak fluent English are difficult to find. I went to Philippines to find mine and just brought her sister back to live with us in Pattaya. She doesn't smoke, drink, swear or like to party, is a great dancer (won many dance contests back home) enjoys movies, bowling and trying new things. She has never had a boyfriend and is finding it difficult to be attracted to guys that are 40-50 years older than her who are "butterflies".

She would love to find someone closer to her own age that wants to have a committed relationship starting with friendship and moving forward slowly. She is not like the girls back home that need wining and dining at fancy restaurants. She has never experienced the finer things in life so has no idea what she might be missing.

I have been with my wife for 3 years and even with all the girls available here in Thailand I have never strayed nor have I been tempted, I am a lucky man. If anyone would like to meet her (sister J, leave my wife alone LOL) they can come to the Pattaya City Expat Club on Sunday morning at 9:30am (if you cannot get up that early on Sunday you are too much of a party person)and I will be happy to introduce you.

Included is a picture of my wife Rita and sister J, PM if you want more information.

    you pimping them out?

  6. Slightly off topic, but related. I am in America just now and I-Pads cost exactly the same everywhere. In shops and online, same prices. looks like Apple have some sort of price fixing thing going on.

I think you may be onto something. Have you notified the authorities?

What authorities? Doesn't worry me what they charge. Up to them

well i bought mine in thailand from banna IT , authorised Apple retailer, i paid 15,000 THB

in the UK same ipad 2 is 399 Pounds , 15,000 THB = 312 Pounds, so i paid 88 pounds less in thailand then the UK , as 15,000 THB = 480 Dollars, i paid 20 Dollars less then the USA..

so they are not the same price everywhere

  7. Perhaps you should make a forum search from 5 to 6 years back,, same opinions.

i did that the other night .... as the forum starts to get active around the beginning of 2005....

back then , people where compaling about BKK, infrustuture ect ect, and if you look further, so many promoises for better well everything...

if you had asked in 2005 / 2006 what you think samui would be like in 2011, the answers would be alot different from the reality are in now ...

waterpark- never happened - 2 nd airport - never happened - Tarmac around the ring road - part happened - city status - never happened - Central World - never happned - marina - never happened - Certian Real Estate Projects - to many to list - better flood prevention - never happned - sorting out the electric - never happned - faster internet - starting to happen

the list can go on and on and on

how many posters came living the dream - hundreds.... most now departed

  8. but does anyone who bemoans them have any ingsight into this or do they just moan cos they don't like it?

Bangkok Airways is a private company, and therefore does not need to release detailed financial statements. It owns and manages the airport itself, and used to own the land. It now - through an investment fund - owns 25% of the land.

The company is profitable - and is aiming to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, and so is likely to want to remain profitable for that purpose.

You only have to look at the prices it charges on the routes where there is no competition to see that those routes are up to twice what they perhaps should be looking at all other routes where they do have competition (or regulation?) A good example would be to Phuket, or to Chiang Mai.

I suspect the cost of leasing the land is fixed, probably at the level it was back in 2006 (?). Landing fees are charged by the company, not the landowner. The few other airlines using the airport charge very similar prices to BA, either because of the high landing fees, or more likely, because they can charge higher. Or possibly, because BA does not allow them to significantly undercut them.

    Thanks for that.

When you say landing fees are charged by the company, not the landowner, do you mean BA or the company operating (or comprising) the fund?

Am I being simplistic to expect an airfare where they have no up front cost, capital commitment and associated costs to be cheaper than one where they have invested heavily in building the airport in the first place?

but is the new airport even needed, what was wrong with the old one, it had charm to it !,

The new shopping area is a complete waste of space...

    oh well

  9. the country origin of tourists has certainly changed , with alot less brits, and plenty more russians and indians, also a huge influx of australians...

but with the THB dropping to 47 against the pound today, and the australian currency taking a bashing in the last week ( it has been strong ) , expect to see less and less of these nations in thailand...

Thailand is becoming more and more expensive EVERYDAY, and they are not adjusting prices to suite, with a sole airline that costs nearly as much as a return flight to the uk just to get from BKK to Samui, matched with over rated and expensive hotels, i can see Samui slowly dying

The TAT will make up some amazing stats on tourists, esp those coming from korea , china ect ect, but the bottom line is they dont spend outside there circles

People may complain about the brits, the australians and other europeans, but they are the life line to the tourist industry in Samui, but everyone is tighting thre belts and looking for the best deal/value holiday, and samui just doesnt fit in

  10. what people are failing to realise , is there is an upper order with these people....

do you think they can all afford flights and accomodtion here? , who is the thai or thais who are the backbone to there operations?

i had the pleasure in speaking to one of the ' high ' up nigeraians, and he liked to admit thailand was one of the only countries where they can get awy with what they are doing!, its not just drugs and pimps, but gold, dimond smuggling, the list can go on !

to take away the promblem, you have to take away the people in charge of them and protecting them

  11. Samui Residents to Bid for New Airport in Monopoly Challenge

PHUKET: Samui residents have banded together to buy 2000 rai for a new airport to challenge a monopoly held by Bangkok Airways.

The plan for a second ''Samui airport'' was a measure of the discontent with the way that the existing airport was being run, the Phuket-based chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Tourism, Tunyaratt Achariyachai, [read more]

  12. i worked for lloyds bank, and they merged with TSB to create LLoyds TSB , it would be impossible to manuel transfer everything, when one branch moved to another branch in the network, it would take up to 1 year to clear the back log of accounts within the system, so to do a whole entire bank would take YEARS ! , also the thai's are not the brightest bunch with numbers, and this , well just wouldnt happen

as much as this maybe off topic

Are you sure the "other half" is working 7 days a week for those long hours or up to some other hijinks?

i think she might be pulling your leg here , so she isnt home , it wouldnt be the first time in thailand this has happened, but she will of course win ' ThaiVisa Wife of the year excuse ' ,
