I've always enjoyed reading your stories; they are entertaining.
We learn to think and do things differently in Thailand, it will help you find your way...

For ordinary reading lenses, my wife usually goes back one hour later and they are ready. How long does it take to get your glasses ready? If you came in the morning, chose the frame and lenses, would the glasses be ready in the afternoon? For my progressive lenses, around 4 days; it seems that shops don't have the equipment to do it, they are made elsewhere.
If you are in Bangkok, I recommend one optician in the Amarin Plaza: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=12275&hl= (read the whole thread)

Some countries require your personal mark stamped on silver (or gold...). Because of that, check with your customs first because if you don't declare and get caught, you might never get it back...Hi everybodyAnyone know if there are laws regulating the export of silver in small amount? Do you have to declare it at the costoms when leaving Thailand? What happens if they "catch" you leaving Thailand or entering a European country with more then "unresonable-amount-of-silver-for-the-big-family"?
Thank's for your time

Turn right at the end of Silom: Charoen Krung Rd (aka New Road). My wife has bought quite a bit of Hilltribe jewelry mainly in Chaig Mai. She is thinking about starting a small business selling such items, also pieces from India and Bali. Can anyone tell me if there are any wholesale outlets forsuch .925 silver in BKK, I saw a post that said there were a number of outlets off Siom Rd, is this a good place to start? -
Production costs don't always come first. Put a plastic fan outside and see how long it lasts... I would say one year. The plastic will dry and the blades will break! If you have to replace the fan then do so with the one recommendedby the manufacturer.
He spent a lot of money on research, why do you think you know better?
Disagree with you totally... most manufacturers find the adequte solution with the lowest production cost.
For example, tires on cars. Why don't auto manufacturers equip new cars with top of the line, better performing, longer lasting tires?

What's so important with 2.0? My computer is old and I just bought a printer with USB 1.1. Will I be able to use this printer with any new computer in the future? Thank you.but be sure to specify USB 2.0. -
His son also gets anything he wants... Don't you remember this story:Great family man? He cared so much about his daughter's admission in a university that the scores were changed for her, asking her to study a bit more or try somewhere else was of course a ridiculous idea.Bra-vo ... Setting a nice example for his children. "If you're not smart enough to make your way through life, buy your way through. I did! See? I was elected once again "

I remember well the end of the story... http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?sh...pic=23946&st=45You could try asking tuktukmike. I believe he imported a car from the UK (as it was old enough that the import duty was relatively low, and he was very attached to the car as he'd worked on it himself for years...). A search on the forum should pick it up. -
A doctor confirmed it was a kidney problem or it's your opinion? Does the pain go away when you massage your lower back? I used to think that my pain from side to side (or sometimes only one side) was a kidney problem until I realized that a three-minute massage with Chinese oil could relieve the pain... It was a back problem!I've been getting some very, very bad lower back pains recently and I want to get them checked out.I had x-rays when I was back in England, where they also looked for kidney stones as the intense pain is in that region. I came away no better, and none the wiser.
I would really like to get it thoroughly checked out and a friend suggested that an MRI scan is what's needed.
Can anyone recommend where I can go in order to follow this up and roughly what a thorough examination and scan should cost. Don't really want to pay falang rate if I can help it.
Thanks in advance.

I've never seen them at that location.thanks for the help, one more quick question.. Am I right in thinkin theres a cashconverters @ carrefoure on rama IV?I visited cashconverters in Carrefour on Chaeng Wattana Road a few years ago... Maybe it's still there...

I need to add: Be very careful. Some countries will require a special import licence; some ask for your own stamp on each piece; others will require a "made in Thailand" label attached to each piece, etc... For jewelry, laws can be different even within the EU.

Turn right at the end of Silom: Charoen Krung Rd (New Road), you'll find silver wholesalers and a few of them have belly button rings. Continue on that road and turn right on Surawong Road, after the Trocadero Hotel a few shops sell exclusively those products.

They don't always come from the ground...thanks again for all the anti-wood advice (and some pro wood too). it's a 2 story house anyhow and the 1st story is all concrete so the little buggers will have to be good climbers to get up 4m of concrete to the wood.steve
Have you ever seen wings of insects stuck on mosquito screens? They are wings of flying termites. They are attracted by lights; most lose their wings by going through the screen but some of them don't... If you suddendly see some insects flying around your lights in your house, you'll know...
That's how they also arrive on higher floors...

Your post is about the law in your own country (USA?) but it doesn't mean that things work this way in other countries! Those who have suggested that there is an incentive to do away with the borrower to collect the property sooner upon death are ill informed about reverse mortgages. -
Jeanne Calment was a 90 years old French woman, he was half her age. He was a notary public who made a deal under a similar agreement. It was a good deal, the monthly payment for her house was low... and at 90 years old...In the US, there is a regulated industry which provides reverse mortgages for elderly house and condo owners who have either paid off or largly paid off their housing debt. His friends started to make fun of him... she feted her 100th birthday... and going and going... the monthly payments too...
He died at the age of 77, Jeanne died a year later at the age of 122. The oldest person in the world at that time with a birth certificate and recognized by the Guiness Book of Records.
She used to say: I have only one wrinkle... and I'm sitting on it!

Baiyoke 1 Tower in Pratunam; at least two shops sell them.

Nothing to worry about...
When I asked for my One year visa (Thai spouse), as they usually do, I got the visit of two immigration inspectors.
I was wearing only shorts and obviously building a kitchen counter; they said it looked good and one of them asked me about a special tool on the floor, I showed him how to use it. I don't think it even crossed their mind that I was "working"!
My wife was not even there that afternoon... they ask our neighbors if they knew me. Later, our neighbors told my wife that they confirmed we were both living there, that they saw us doing some painting together, etc...
I guess they wrote everything in their report... I got the visa...

Why xenophobic??? That's the law for everybody... Thai people included.Well, guess you can get 50% knocked of if you put some Thai smallprint at the bottom. Seems like a highly xenophobic law to me, though. -
It's true and it happened to a guy renting a shophouse from my sister-in-law.
Read what I wrote about signs: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?sh...07entry295407

Every year at the tax office they asked her how much she was making, her answer was sales of a few hundred baht/day... the tax was under one thousand baht/year.freguentatore,Your experience is very similar to the one I was talking about. The tax owing is small. I recall the figure of 1.3 million Baht income being mentioned. I think that's the point where tax owing greatly increases. I'm not 100% sure on that.
NL
As Thai people say: I make little money; I have to take care of my parents; pay for my little brother's school tuitions, etc... just be ready to cry...
-
Own experience: Mini-mart in a moo bahn; was open for almost a year already.
Two guys from the tax department stopped by and asked my wife to go to the tax department at the district office (building where Thai people usually renew their ID card, etc...). They didn't ask any questions about her name or income... nothing... She went to the office to declare her business and used to go there once a year to pay that tax. A few hundred baht a year, that's all. No accounting, no income tax, nothing else.
The tax might be a little more expensive for people using a business sign or brand name signs (like Mitsubishi, Toshiba, etc, for a guy selling air conditioners.....).
They told her that once a year they go around trying to find new businesses (that's why many small factories operating in shophouses/townhouses close their door...).
Like many small businesses in Thailand, your wife doesn't have to open a company. She could just go to the office and ask for information... nothing to worry about...

Thanks. That's the second thread dealing with water heaters these last few months. This week, I finally disconnected mine... I really have to ground it...
My mother-in-law got really scared six months ago; she received a shock and burned her hand as it got stuck on the shower head; her unit had a small leak inside. That (National brand) water heater leaked a first time a few years ago when it was still under warranty... My wife has heard many stories about people getting shocked from a water heater.
Before getting a new one, she called the electricity company; they sent her mother some electricians to install a 2-meter earthing rod...

- Wood Fair organized on Soi Prachanarumit in Bang Po. March 5 - 6. Woodcarving competition; food stands, etc...
Subway: Bang Sue + short ride by taxi.
This street is filled with shops dealing in furniture, teak wood, woodcarvings, made-to-order products, parts, etc. Very good choice of fittings like handles, knobs, hinges, special screws, etc for kitchen cabinets or any furniture; special brackets for shelves, and other stuff for doors, windows, etc...
It's where cabinet makers get their supplies. Shops sell retail and wholesale, they have a lot of parts and other stuff you won't find anywhere else in Bangkok.
