  1. Thanks for those links, I'll be sure to keep up to date as my mother doesn't arrive for another 7 or 8 weeks. Worldnomads isn't cheap - about £120 for 2 months just in Thailand !

I noticed that the FCO updated their warnings again today, here's a quote and a link :

Before travelling to Thailand check with your insurance provider that they will continue to cover for claims arising from the current political situation. Some travel insurance policies exclude cover following a military coup or the imposition of martial law, and your insurance may be invalid.

    https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand

Some people might think I'm being over paranoid on this issue but it's very important to make sure there's no small print invalidating your cover, nobody will tell you until you attempt to make a claim and by that stage you're already in trouble !

  2. So it was a "complete setup" by the local BIB it turns out. How could all the the TV CSi Hangum High posters overlook that there were none of his belonging claimed stolen in the photo's. In these cases they go to the room of the so called victim, find the items and then display them as fraud evidence for the photo shoot. That is because they were actually stolen! This man did not even have travel insurance to make a claim. At the trial "neither the prosecutor or police went to the court to object the dismissal of the case". Seems his lawyer had asked too many simple questions at soi 9 that could not be answered. I guess all the drive posters around here too busy with the "he's not British" and the "give him the maximum sentence" to actually put 2 + 2 together and that they should have given this man the benefit of the doubt.

So this leads to the next logical question, how many times have they done this before and got away with it ?

Every similar case ever prosecuted should be scrutinised in great detail.

Who were the officers involved ?

  3. Are they concerned that people will be flocking to Thailand to take the jobs of Thai's ?

I've got news for them, it will be the reverse.

    It's called the 'brain drain' : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_capital_flight

When new labour markets open up the smartest, most intelligent and best of the best will find it's much easier to make the move elsewhere.

With this new ASEAN agreement even the mediocre will find it easy to earn more elsewhere.

  4. A trained healthcare worker, in a U.S. hospital working environment, presumably knowing this patient had Ebola, and he still caught it. When they say that you have to have had contact with an infected person's bodily fluids, and that it's not airborne, etc., it sounds pretty "hard to catch" if you're just exercising due care. But it would appear that it's actually NOT.

No clarification yet on whether contact was during Duncan's first visit or prior to Ebola diagnosis. If nurse contracted while providing care to Dumcan after he was diagnosed then, there may be cause for concern regarding mode of transmission.

Unfortunately, many people were exposed to Duncan's Ebola between his first hospital visit and subsequent diagnosis. If only one or two get it from the Duncan screw up, I think that supports the statement that it is not easily transmitted.

I feel for health care workers and first line responders in the US as they did not sign up for this unlike those volunteering to assist in Africa. Potentially getting killed while trying to help others and do your job is hard core.

How does one really protect triage nurses and first line responders absent putting them in hazmat suits during their entire shift.

It would appear that's been clarified, as CDC has now announced that there was a "breach in protocols" (involving the wearing & removal of the protective suit if I read it correctly) and that the infection occurred after the diagnosis and during Duncan's care at the hospital.

It's beginning to sound to me like the waiting room in an emergency or acute care clinic could become a very very dangerous place if you're NOT there because of an Ebola infection...for both the waiting public and medical staff.

Yeah, it sounds to me like they're grasping at straws here.

They have no idea how / why this unnamed nurse became infected so for now they're assuming the nurse did something wrong.

I'd say this is concerning because with all that protection and precaution I would have thought exposure would have been very minimal even with a breach of protocol.

Just how much Ebola infected 'material' do you need to be exposed to before becoming infected ?

  5. They are going to attack/blast those target sites with negative reviews, aiming to ruin the business's that are implicated.

Having read some of the reviews posted on a couple of these places some months ago I don't think anything they do will make much differrence.

    They're already rated very badly.

  6. And now as reported by The Washington Post we have this : "Dallas health worker followed ‘full CDC precautions’ with Ebola patient"

This 'health worker' has now tested positive for Ebola in a preliminary test. I'm not exactly sure what a preliminary test is but that it was positive is worrying. I suspect they would not release information like this based on a single 'preliminary' test result.

    Source : http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2014/10/12/dallas-health-care-worker-who-treated-thomas-eric-duncan-has-tested-positive-for-ebola/

Edit : The important part of this incident is that they confirm the health worker was adhering to the full CDC precautions but they didn't work.

  7. Does anyone have any information as to whether there are any 'insurance blackspots' where normal travel insurance doesn't provide cover ?

Some relatives of mine are coming to Thailand and may do some traveling around the place a bit while here.

I noticed that the British FCO warnings and advice talk of specific places which most tourists don't tend to visit - places down south like Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla. These are the places where they see death and destruction on a daily basis, so much so that it's become quite normal these days.

However the British government have recently issued further warnings relating to 'The Samui Archipelago' which I'm assuming is just a sub section of the collection of islands known as the 'Chumphon Archipelago'.

I wonder if these warnings affect travel insurance policies ?

Could anyone clarify on this ? Is a regular travel insurance policy valid when travelling into these lawless 'rebel infested' areas like Pattini and the other places mentioned above ?

  8. The country doesn't want long term tourists, they don't want people abusing the loopholes in the visa system to extend their holidays. You can work, you can invest, you can retire, you can be married (if you have money/job), you can study if you are really studying. Sounds reasonable to me.

The country should be doing all it can to encourage long term tourists even if that means issuing new types of visas which makes it easier for people to stay for longer periods of time without having to do the stupid visa runs.

The numbers are going to be way down this year and this will have consequences which work their way throught the government right to the very top.

  9. my boyfriend he apply passport in may 29th it now ofer 19 week later and he be arrested for overstay and now he in immigration, because he no able to leaf country so he hand him in now I get phone call he passport done and be send to Bangkok, but he no go be send home it no fair what can do please help me, he called alan

You need to tell him that his passport has arrived and he will be able to speak to someone who will arrange collection. It is possible that the Embassy will arrange this - there was a recent case where a British passport holder was thrown in prison due to the passport office's bad practices.

  10. My Passport is finished in 6 months, when should I be going to Bangkok?

Do I still have to apply in person and pick it up in person?

Can I use my yellow book as proof of residence?

Act now and you might be ok.

    Are you serious?

It says at least 6 weeks on the website, didn't think it would mean at least 6 months!.

Good forward planning for all potential outcomes can really help mitigate any problems down the road.

You have plenty of time left on your current passport yet you might be forgetting one thing - it's useless now.

You generally can't travel anywhere except your home country during the last 6 months of your passports validity. So if you need to travel anywhere apart from the UK then you already have a problem.

Even with the current very bad situation you have time to apply for a passport and get it back before it runs out.

Apply now and don't delay, there's no reason not to because like I said - it's not really a passport anymore due to the 6 months validity thing with the airlines so you won't be using it as a passport anyway. You could possibly use it at land borders during the final 6 months but I wouldn't count on it.
