  1. Hi. Got a house in Central Pattaya. I was told that the phone/internet services will not be available for the next 2-3months. Can someone recommend any alternative so I can get a decent internet connection in my house. I was thinking of satellite internet but I know it is very expensive. Have heard too that True offers Cable internet but can't confirm if it really exist..

Appreciate you help guys. Thanks a lot.

get a Solomon GPRS modem until you get a telephone line. its a USB plug in unit, you use a GPRS sim card & you can get a package deal with DTac for unlimited use for one month for 999 baht. its not ADSL by any means but its better speed than dial up. once you get the line in your house you can get ADSL in and you can sell the unit on the Thaivisa classifieds. you can get them at Wattana opposite Foodland for 6900 baht.
  2. i had the same problems with maxnet until their technician told me that maxnet had underestimated the customer pick up on Indy service when they 'doubled' the speed for the same money and found they did not have enough capacity, hence the slow speeds. he advised i switch to the premier service which uses a different server. the price went up by 99baht a month and the advertised speed went down. but as i was getting dial up like speed on Indy, the jump up in speed was incredible from 50-100kbs sometimes to right now from thaivisa speed test

this whilst listening to Chris Evans on play again from BBC UK and five other live windows open

i am very happyi took his advise

i know some will say you are paying more for less advertsied speed but in my view its a question of what can actually be delivered not whats advertised.

  3. I use that shell station all the time, i never noticed sucha thing, or anything improper. .I think aguy-you just saw something wrong..how would you not notice that you just got charged to fill up 2 tanks? I mean when I fill my motorbike it's around 100B if the attendent said 200 I would want to know why so much this time? there no scamming being done at that station..
scamming? they perform miracles there, they managed to squeeze in 1300 baht worth of fuel into a 900 baht capacity fuel tank. after checking there were no leaks on the tank, offering the 900 baht and then having very harsh words with the pump attendant, my friend decided to make a stand and the police were called, the story was told, the operator offered no argument with the policeman in his defence and became very genial

the policeman instructed my friend to pay the 900 baht he felt he owed for the fuel he had and to leave it that. he did and left, never to return.

  4. if any good came out of this painful event i can tell you after reading about it on this forum, i got my wake up call and had my Great Dane chipped and registered him at the city vet. it doesn't make him immune to kidnap or anything but i feel more secure for him. whilst on this subject any Dane owners out there? he needs a playmate since his brother passed over

  5. ok, lets open this up a bit, anyone who has been here over 5 years, do they like it better now or then? did they generally feel safer then or now?

Been done on another thread..... :o

    does it still exist?
  6. i have been stopped many times in my car on Sukhumvit at organised offical police checkpoints. i have never been asked for nor has there ever been an indication of a exchanging of money. in fact the last time, i was driving fast in the outside lane and was flagged down. i was not wearing my seat belt, it was too late to try to put it on so i thought i will brazen it out or pay the fine rather than slip it on and argue about it. the policeman came over, we exchanged polite respectful greetings, he asked me where i had been, i told him Boy air & sound, he said where was i going, i said home (nearby) he said put your seat belt on, i did so he said thank you, you can go, i left, gratefully. no problems and have never had them. (touch wood)

  7. its unfortunate Mike but Pattaya just isn't representative of the land of smiles anymore, there are some very agressive, rascist Thais out there now. i beleieve we are reaping what we have sowed. farangs have taught them the worst excesses of western behaviour and they are emulating that behaviour. i am very sorry this happened to fresnoboy and his wife.

  8. as i understand it and backed up by a recent article in the talk of the town section of the pattaya today newspaper 16-31 december 2007 issue page 15 and allegedly confirmed by the immigration office in Chomtien, clearly states that ''for second or subsequent applications the 3 months rule does not apply'' only the first one needs to have the money lodged 3 months prior to application. so i am not sure why it was implemented here . TIT

//Edit: This post is off topic. The OP talks about application in Bangkok. - Maestro

thats as maybe but as the editor of the Pattaya Today news paper is the honorary British consul Barry Kenyon MBE , i would say the information is accurate and would cover Bangkok immigration too. so there!!

  10. i have maxnet premier on the east side of sukhumvit in Pattaya, no problems at all after upgrading from the recently slowed Indy package. i am now 1 of 10 instead of 1 of 20, maybe my other 9 users are not so active but whilst listening to steve wright on BBC radio UK listen again service and about ten website windows open on mozilla, my speed now as just tested by Thaivisa speedtest is

    happy with that.

i wish you well with yours

  11. i live in Thailand and i am with DBS in Singapore. i have a treasures account and i am currently on a month to month FT in NZ $ making 8.05% this month service is great, 24 hours a day availablity, i have my own account manager who calls regularly with recomendations without being pushy. i highly recomend them as a bank. if you are not a Singaporean or do not have a work permit you will need a written introduction from a DBS account holder thats been with them for a minimum 6 months or you will not be allowed to open an account regardless of funds you may have to deposit.

  12. i would recomend the Butchers Arms on Soi Bukaou, Barry the governor was a wholesale butcher in Uk so he knows his meat. the food is good quality with big portions and for my money the best big fat chips in town. the pubs not bad either, nice atmosphere with good selection of british grog on tap.
