  1. i would be buying 20 baht noodles on the side of the road

Are you crazy? ..you can get a packet of MaMa noodles for less than 4 (four) Bahts

Yeah, but then i need a kitchen, electricity too cook them, cleaning up and some shops like the pad thai near Chicaboom rock, so does the Sukhothai style pad thai outside family mart on pattaya tai across from the market.

  2. So shop there, but I can assure you if Friendship or Foodland built a market close by, Foodmart would instantly lose over 90 percent of their business.

BTW, I don't find 7-11 a rip off, though I do consider Foodland one. Foodland present themselves as a supermarket and 7-11 is obviously a convenience store.

I do and there are products that are actually cheaper than in friendship, but if i was worried about a few baht on Farang food, i would be buying 20 baht noodles on the side of the road instead of a steak from the US or Lamb chops from Australia.

The staff always seem very happy and helpful to me, the Thai manager is very knowledgeable and they have a great wine selection.

Parking is free at Foodmart too, unlike friendship who even charge you to do a uturn through their carpark.

Foodland seem to not have a lot of the outside brands as they manufacture so many things themselves with processed goods, they do have some items i cant get anywhere else.

  3. I find it a good place to shop, only the road works hinder it right now, they are open 24 hours and that comes at a cost, 7/11 aren't as cheap as the Tesco mini near me either, but that doesn't make 7/11 a rip off, a rip of is where you buy something that is fake or not really what it claims to be, so really they are just more expensive than other stores.

I hate the traffic when i go shopping and if i have to pay more to shop at midnight or 2am when there isn't any traffic then I am happy to pay extra, thats not a rip off, its a service.

It's also not a multi national or global chain and I would rather support a individual or a small business any day over those large chains.

  4. There is a D70s that is a slightly improved model.

    From a review of them

The D70s is essentially an update of the D70, adding a larger LCD screen (2 inches / 51 millimetres instead of 1.8 inches / 46 millimetres), though still having 130,000 pixels. The D70s also comes with the newer EN-EL3a battery with slightly higher capacity. While the battery performance is increased, the new version of the D70 lacks the previously included MS-D70 battery holder, which allowed users to mount three CR2 batteries in the camera in case of a dead battery (notably the adapter is not compatible with CR123 batteries). The camera is also equipped with a terminal for a proprietary remote release cable (MC-DC1).

In addition, the D70s features an increased 18 mm angle of coverage from its built-in flash; the flash on the D70 could only be used with lenses as wide as 20 mm. All other updates to the D70s are available for the D70 through a firmware update, which include improved auto-focus performance, updated menu design and updated in-camera printer support.

  5. To answer your question, I don't think any bars in Pattaya have an "entry fee" for anything.

Bars like Jade house and Kineree charge a fee, the fee at Jade you get back in drinks, I think its 200 baht, Harleigh bar in soi 17 does the same now as well, I think this is a reasonable way to do things and fair for both the customer and the bar as it will allow the bar to survive and keep holding these events.

  6. Theres a older Thai Man that is at the Pattaya Expats club functions, he sells stickers for you car that he claims ward off these pesky pirates, has anyone bought one of these 1,000 baht stickers and checked if his claim is true or not.

  7. The price is not bad, I looked at prices in the Cliff and they are 50-70,000 per sqm for that size whereas these are only 42,000.

Bang Saray is miles from anywhere and isnt easily accessible at all without private transport.

The Cliff is walking distance from the centre of Thailand's second largest city (or third largest, depending on who you listen to), with fast, regular, cheap, direct connections to the airport and capital.

I think that explains the price difference and personally I am astounded that Bang Saray prices are so high.

I can see how the land would be cheaper but this is only a small part of the cost of a project, but the materials to build would still be the same price if it was in downtown Pattaya or Bang Saray.

There are some people who don't want to live downtown too, just have a look how many developments there are over on the darkside, yes they are houses, but the condo by the beach somewhere quiet appeals to a lot, I guess thats why they have sold 56% so far.

  8. True, it is NEAR a quiet beach but eventually more development will arrive which means a string of Seven-Elevens; tailor shops; massage/foot massage parlors; night markets; open bars blarring music until midnight...and within 10 years another towering condo will block the view of this complex

They say that they are 200 meters from the sea and that will not happen .The Condos are not exactly cheap though for where they are ( long way of of town ) .I asked them for the price of the cheapest 36 sqm ,one bedroom unit with sea view .Its almost B1,500,000

The price is not bad, I looked at prices in the Cliff and they are 50-70,000 per sqm for that size whereas these are only 42,000.

  9. Would anybody have knowledge of the various classes of Thai maritime certificates (for boat operation)?

And the associated requirements for obtaining such?

    ---------------------

In particular, what are the relevant requirements for operating a Thai registered pleasure craft, (in Thai waters)?

(Would it be relatively straight forward to obtain a Thai certificate on the basis of IMO DO compatible certificates?)

Grateful for any light that could be shed on the above.

  10. Some tips.

They must ask permission to go behind the counter of any venue to check what music/cd's they have, if they don't requested this then they are breaking the law themselves.

They must also have filled out a day report before heading out for any any stings, get the report checked to see they were not out of the area they were intending on visiting.

(Small things like this can mean the difference between getting out of it or paying a fine, so note down everything they do, they will usually video things as well for their own evidence)

Don't use mp3's, use original CD's and avoid playing Thai music.

Have a valid license from One Stop and RKT and only play the songs by artists covered by these licenses.

Make sure food and drink licenses are also kept up to date.

Have a good lawyers number handy who will come out even after hours, they do stings at night as they know many wont be contactable and also that the license companies are closed after hours.

You do not have to pay the fine, you can choose to take a night in Jail and have your case heard in court and the amount would normally be a lot less if resolved in a court, but you lawyer will be able to advise you on this better as to which way to proceed, to avoid staying in Jail you can get bail bond insurance quite cheaply to avoid a night in the tank.

  11. Who came up with the3600 Baht total figure? If it was them it is pretty clear that the price should be per curtain not per foot.

8 curtains 450 baht each piece, total 3,600 baht quotd verbally over the phone

  12. AFAIK the foot isn't even a recognized standard in Thailand, you should have been quoted in meters or cm, or per piece. Thailand is metric.

They asked for the size in feet to get an idea of how large they are, then quoted 450 per piece, then changed to per foot when the bin came.

  13. I needed to get some curtains cleaned, so knowing that they have been exposed to UV for anumber of years I didnt want to just get the corner Laundry to clean them, a search of the internet found a shop in Naklua that does Hotels cleaning and guarantees no damage, a quick call and a quote for the 12' x 6' heavy curtains was 450 baht each and 3,600 baht total and they would pickup.

3 days later is where the trouble started.

They arrive back with the curtains all perfectly cleaned and a bill for 59,000 baht! they wanted 450 baht a foot when they only quoted 450 baht per curtain, after lots of discussion, they handed over the curtains and 3,600 was paid, but they still want the remainder, what to do?

  14. That may be the case as long as the compressor is running, however the compressor of an aircon is not running all the time. I guess the compressor of my aircon is running around 15 minutes per hour. For the rest of the time its just the ventilator, witch is using maybe 100 watt.

Here is what my LG SL13 which is nearly 13,000 btu looks like over time, fan uses 20 watts and its around 900 watts with compressor running, time frame is seconds, so initial compressor run is about 6 min.

The other thing they get you on is if it were your own apartment and meter paying directly to MEA/PEA the rate is not flat 3.5 baht, its starts on about 1.5 baht and goes up as usage gets higher. But if your happy paying 7 baht at least they should read the meter right so its not 70 baht a unit.

  16. The ambulance accompanying the BIB is for drug tests, normally for "staff" but customers are not exempt including farangs.

The police are only allowed to perform drug tests if a Navy Narcotics officer is present.

  17. 1/3 the price ? I agree with you, however i noticed fish and chip places such as Simons at Jomtiem,NOT Simple Simons, but Simons on the main road jomtiem have the same price ,actually more than Western Prices.

Had fish and chips with tartare sauce the other week in Australia.

Cost was 8.50,thats around 180 baht or so?

So it was a big piece of fish and real potato chips, plus tartare sauce and slice of lemon 8 dollars 50 cents, around 180 baht.

i think its more expensive in Pattaya.

Actually $8.50 AUD is about 261.00 baht right now

  18. Thanks for the replies,

I had figured the 12,000 fine in the small rooms but wanted to go look and see about a slightly bigger for the other room. We currently have a LG in another shop (takes forever to cool the whole room down but were cooling a 4m x 12m area) and it seems pretty good to me, we don't use to often mostly ceiling fans, I was just curious others thoughts.

Anybody have any experience with York? I've read in a thread somewhere on here that they thought dakine and york being the top 2, but I've not herd of these 2.

Anyways thanks for the opinions :jap:

It depends if they have service in your area, yes York is an international brand, but they dont make them here like they do for export, all of the major brands only sell grade 2 units here, the grade 1 units are only for export, they are all pretty much the same inside, Toshiba Carrier, Panasonic, LG - these are what is referred to as tier 1 brands, York, Trane and Central are all tier 2 brands here and their look and quality is reflected in this.
