  1. Who was 'Cheerful Charlie' that the place was named after? A movie/TV character?

I believe the man's name is Charlie, and he's staying with the fish and chips.

you've lost me there, son. there was a guy in a movie called cheerful charlie, and theres also a guy who stays at the chippy called charlie and theres another guy who owns the chippy is a charlie. is that right?

what's the name of the movie. i googled it but no results.

update. found it , it was a childrens book by cynthia ryder (never heard of him) . i think i googled cheap charlie.

  2. he should get the price right if he wants to sell quick. if its the same place that i heard about the 2m baht pub/restaurant thats on tv was 3.5m and started off at 6m.

how many pubs/bars restaurants for sale right now

correction. the 2m baht pub for sale on tv isn't the same as the pub that's for sale at 3.5m.

thats 2 pubs and 2 chippies for sale at the moment in chiang mai. where are the brits goin' if theyre not coming here? fact - tourism is well down in chiang mai and theres the proof.

  3. Don't worry Neti, to be fair i wouldn't want to go and sit in a bar with 2 old baldies, a scouser and Mr Clough, not exactly the "A Team" :( .

It looks like standards are slipping. I remember when they had a strict 'No Riff Raff'' policy , business must be slow. You didn't mention the tattooed Rock musician that looks like Coco the clown!! What is the world coming to?

will be there down 'the lion' for footie sunday

  5.  i saw another business for sale in the classifies a pub/restaurant with indoor/outdoor seating catering to tourists and expats for 2m baht. i heard of one pub for sale at 3.5m, maybe he dropped his price?

sign of the times. as paul weller wrote ' the sign says closed, its a sign of the times'. nice one, weller, la.

  6. great idea 'twofortheroad'.wondered if you got your inspiration from britains fave 'grabba' venue 'the grafton'....."deffo la' !

I certainly remember hearing references to a 'Grab a granny at The Grafton" night, but being the young handsome charmer that I was, I never had a need to investigate further.

These days, I'm more interested in finding places where young ladies might be charmed by mature gentlemen.

Can we expect to see a 'Grab a Granny at Guitarman' night in the near future? There's a good ring to that title, too.

'deffo' 'Grab a Granny @ Guitarman' and the night after 'Grab a Tranny'

  7. twofortheroad.

re .... It sounds like a  'best Fish n Chips in Chiang Mai' snap poll should be called

no need ...... no need at all ..... the un irish bar has already won it i think  .. mmmm .. their fish is delish : )

    dave2

ps .... try the fishermans pie as well ..... its gooood .... post-42592-076695300 1277337439_thumb.jp

Not even close or in  the same league.:D

Charlies did the best Fish & Chips in Chiang Mai, followed by the Irish Pub (IMO)

All other pub / restaurants serving F&C, are 'also rans'

As stated earlier, it must be difficult to sustain a business in Chiang Mai based on this one product.

dafter still to have 4 or 5 of them trying to do it.

  13. My gf and I had dinner a couple of times at S-cape (formerly known as Sportsbar). It's on ChangKlan road opposite the nigthbazar building on the 4th(?) floor (take escalators up).

Great western food for a very low price. Haven't seen this quality for that low of a price in CM yet. If I would compare to i.e. Riverside, then quality is same/better but the price is significantly lower.

I am pretty sure that beer is about THB 60 per small bottle and other spirits are also quite cheap.

The atmosphere is nice, relaxed and western style. Sauces are brand named (Heinz ketchup, Dijon mustard etc.) not the cheap "imitations". :D

I also love the pies in the UN Irish Pub, big meal for not much. :)

    Hungry now.... :D

I think the former Sports Bar is now closed for re-furbishment (changing into a Live music venue). BTW - most people here think 60 baht for a small beer is extortionate, unless it includes a free ego massage.

The deals at Olde Bell (free or free with a small minimum drinks order) are as good as you'll find, but he probably would like to see you on other nights too.

how does this bar play live music until .....am ... we've just had to pay the police? ? ? ,and are still doing so ...must be suckin' a bigger c..k than me ?? was gonna put a smiley face on next , but i'd be lyin' !

  14. i see the curfew one has gone now. it waas locked for about 5 hours but they must have given up on it. will it be back. that had 42000 hits in a week. some people have been banned for less.

That topic has been disabled (set invisible) due to a major technical issue with it and the database. We are trying to see if it can be repaired at the moment.

interesting. does that explain the unusually high hit count?

  15. OK guys blame me. I tried to post a link from Chiang Mai Mail to Thai Visa and it locked up so they had to delete the thread. Also its on the curfew thread so it will probably go by by. This is the second time I have seen this happen with the Chiang Mai Mail about two months ago this happened. I promise not to do it again. NOW back to the topic. :)
what happens to those posts that you lock up. i see the curfew one has gone now. it waas locked for about 5 hours but they must have given up on it. will it be back. that had 42000 hits in a week. some people have been banned for less.
  16. May i ask sheepishly and at the risk of getting told off by konjianghai, where is the the 3 kings monument :)

yes you may. its in the old city on phapaklao rd. not far from thai airways office. very important shrine to chiangmai people.

anyway, is anyone up for saturdays game away to payao? the chiangmaifc website says theres a free bus for supporters. i can call tomorrow to get more info. if thats not on, kevin at red lion says he may go in the car - room for about 6, but it would probably mean staying over in payao. he doesnt want to drive through the mountains after dark. whos up for it? less than 2 hour drive chm-payao, or the bus, if we can get on, probably a good laugh.

  17. who knows???? but im going to the old one first, but saying that I did the same last week and missed 10 minutes of the game... :D

I think we need to obtain a contact in the club who can give us all the inside news :) .

Was the American guy there last week ?

Was the tall no28 a new player as i don't recall seeing him before ?

it was my first game but i thought the tall no28 was useless. other than score that great goal, what did he do?

i got the wife to check the chiangmaifc web-site - it's sunday at the old stadium in town 6pm.

5.30 at red lion if you need a lift

    chiang mai fc
