  1. Thanks guys, this is a great thread. My wife just passed her driving test and i was going to buy her a Jazz later this year, but after driving my Focus for a couple of months she decided she wants to keep that and for me to have a new vehicle. I looked at the Honda, Nissan, Chevrolet and Ford SUV's. Not one of them compared to the PJS. It felt like a luxury car on the inside and looks great on the outside. Reading this thread have encouraged me more to buy the PJS. Thanks again.

    Nidge.

  2. But this isn't the west.

So then racism against blacks is acceptable here?

Racism against anyone who isn't Thai is acceptable here, sometimes mandatory, haven't you noticed?

Nope. I haven't personally seen discrimination going on, but then I haven't been here very long.

So your saying Thailand is a very racist country?

    it's wake up time!

  3. Again, speak for yourself. Real racism isn't rare actually. But people do have different perceptions of it. I don't see Black Man cleaning products in Thailand as real racism, others might, I think they're being silly, but different points of view make life interesting.

Can I ask what you see it as then? Do you think that there is absolutely no racism involved at all with black man cleaning products? There are different levels of racism, some of it is subtle, some of it is blatant.

Honestly, it would be racist (and also not done) in the US with the name and logo. The phrase black man in itself is not at all racist, but the Minstrel type picture has racist implications in the west, as does the association of black people with cleaning work. Within the context of Thailand, I just don't see it. Seems like innocent branding. The products are high quality and the black man pictured is quite attractive. I doubt a company would start today in Thailand with branding like that, but it is an older brand, they have brand loyalty here, and I don't think they should be harassed for something foreigners may see but Thais generally won't see the same way.

I don't believe that the makers are completely unaware and innocent at all, they could have named their products anything but they decided to name it blackman products out of the names they could have chosen and put a minstrel type picture on their product. No not done innocently at all, just like darkie toothpaste was not innocent.

This thread is about gingernuts. They are biscuits made with ginger. Not red hair but real ginger, why are you going on about blackman and darkie?

  4. so should i stop eating gingernuts? I can settle for chocolate hobnobs if that doesn't offend anyone.

Just stay away from the dingleberries if you know what's good for you!

are dingleberries biscuits too? must be some american brand

    edit: typo

  5. my 1 year (first) license is due to expire in a couple months, I have since moved home to another district, am I required to return to the district office where my license was initially obtained to apply for the 5 year renewal, or can anyone basically turn up at any district office for renewal ?? or should I have submitted my license to update my new address before reapplying for the 5 year license ?

    thanks.

Jonny, you should be able to go the the office in the district you currently live. I got my renewal in Saraburi. My first one was in a different province. The address i used was the one on my work permit which was Bangkok, they looked at my home address but automatically used the work one on the licence.

  6. Thanks for that worth buying one with an inverter then. Interesting saying about insulating the ceiling, I have not yet found a loft entrance to any property in Thailand whats the secret?

The last 4 houses i have lived in have had loft entrances. Each one was in a bathroom and basically a square cut into the plasterboard and a cheap metal edge for the removed square to fit inside. Cheap and effective.

  7. My wife read the thai translation of Brother Grimm, (Craig Russell), and she really enjoyed it. Even though it was Thai she said the language was richer than Thai novels. I think this was the reason it took her so long to read. IMO, Most Thais would not have the patience to struggle through the language and go back to the comic "quick fix".

There are plenty of translated books for sale so there must be people reading them somewhere.
