  1. My sister in law over here couldnt drive 2 years ago, she was way too nervous to drive herself around even though she had use of my or my wifes car. so in the end I made her drive as much as possible while we were with her in the car, small trips to the shops and we would pull over and let her drive for an hour or so while going up country. this helped her so much and now she has her own car and drives very well.

try the same with your wife, where ever you go make her drive and coach her, it will get better once the nerves wear off, and she will then gain confidence.

  2. Op dude, most shops over here do not bother to update there websites, so you will see a great deal and then go to buy it and the shop staff will say "no hab"

Better off to have a browse around yourself, it's a good way to get out and meet people. Why come all the way to Thailand just to sit indoors on the net!

  3. I'm going to come out (no, I mean add my voice to his) in support of the OP, but I suggest broadening the scope. A general helpful hints and tips column would be useful - a bit like the Top Tips column that used to run in Viz, if any of you are juvenile enough to remember that magazine

    SC

He he, top tips in Viz!

An empty aluminium cigar tube filled with angry wasps makes an inexpensive vibrator. Sister S., Berwick

I don't think these tips would be any good to us!

  4. Yes, this is exactly what I want to do, that is why I ask if I can do it, from a legal point of view, or/and if it is common practice by others to do so.

So in summary, I get the idea that it seems to be ok to cut the salary if he does not show up without saying anything, this is however not a problem, he always tells me in advance that he will take leave, so know we just need to know, if I can tell him that I will cut his salary if he takes leave.

If he has no holiday days left and if he has used up his personal business days which you get 2 by law I think. Then you can cut his salary.

You will have to tell him before you cut it though and why.

  5. I use my Blackberry as a tethered modem and my BB is my primary emailing device. This phone is connected to the Internet 24 hours a day. Pushes mail all day long. Cost: 650 baht/mo.

    IPhone I think is: 600 baht/month

Just get unlimited and enjoy the phone.

iPhone is 599 a month for same deal as you. 3G as well.

I just posted this from my iPhone.

  6. turning off gprs wont fix it, it will still find a way to stealth drain ur balance! enter fake APN and fake user/pass in the details, restart ur phone, and that should do it. i had this problem before, but now i just use 650 baht a month unlimited internet package one2call and its fine

Does the 650 baht include any phone credit (for calls)?

    No

  7. Ya old scrooge.:bah:

You wont last long in business if you let your staff control everything! you have to have rules and they need to know what happens if they break them.

I think his staff are lucky.

    two days off every week

    two weeks off at Christmas

on top of that, 30 days sick leave, by law

so many days personal business leave, I think 2 by law. Cant remember now.

and the typical Thai Buddha Holidays.

His staff are not working much really. so if they want extra they should get docked for it.

  8. It's (The NHS) not as good as it use to be for obvious reasons because many ponce's from other countries have come into England or been allow to stay there and <deleted> the f " ing thing up apart from other issues.

Here's a first class example of someone using the internet to display to the world just how dumb they are.

Kwasaki perhaps deliberately, more likely through a lack of cognition, fails to point out that the NHS would collapse if it were not for thousands of foreign doctors, nurses, health professionals and auxiliary staff that work in the NHS.

The last time I was in an NHS Hospital I had surgery performed by a South African surgeon, the anaesthetist was a Spaniard and at least two of the nurses looking after me where Filipino.

agreed, these foriegn national NHS staff work for less money.

  9. The gun thing is OK IF your prepared to use it, if the guy is doped up it will mean nothing to him and might still go for you. I would prefer a lump of 4 x 2, forget the head shot, arms will get in the way and whack the legs, he will go down.

Actually I own quite a few firearms because I compete but....

For home protection the one I have designated is an 18" 12 ga Remington express loaded with 00

None is getting up after that regardless if he has been doped or not.

16 thirty caliber balls have a way of keeping anything down

As a side benefit the Sit Down order followed by the sound of the slide racking will get anyone with a brain to comply.

2x4's & bats are fine if your willing to take a chance but unless your an escrima/arnis student better not take a chance. Not to mention no stick will do if the intruder has a gun

I would never consider going toe to toe with an unknown force in my home at night with my family at risk.

The OP asked for advice & it is all after the fact so hopefully he will get protection/security in what ever form suits his tolerance but.....

The main points to take from your experience is you & your family were very very lucky.

You said you could smell alcohol on his breath. You were way to close for common sense.

Take care of yourself & your family. #1

I remember reading somewhere that most intruders get there guns from the bloke that is protecting himself with and ends up getting shot by his own gun. I would recomened not getting a gun unless you have had training.

better to get the dog and good locks. we have three dogs, my dog which is a bulldog, loud bark but a bit of a pussy. when he barks the little ones upstairs then start barking. so we get woken up if anyone comes near our house, not often because we are at the end of a dead -end street. if anyone got into my house I would be very angry and probably a little scared also. so who know what would happen, I know what I am capable of and would not think twice about confronting them. statistics say that most break-ins are by chancers, doubt they would have a gun, more likely a pcs of wood they found in the road. they would get my baseball bat rammed up there neverregions and I would make sure they couldnt tell anyone of there friends what happened to them so I wouldnt get any comeback.

but thats all easy to say on a forum, I just hope I do not find out what I would do the hard way.

  10. Personally I wouldn't trust any of them. If the women is still remotely passable and not too far passed her sell by date she always use this to her advantage over the guy and maybe seek a better provider if the guy for some reason falls on hard times, no matter how long she has been with the man, even if they have children together.

If the guy works away for long periods at a time, she will eventually seek comfort during those long lonely nights in some other guys bed or worse still invite a guy to take occupation in the marital bed just to fill in while hubbies away working his guts out somewhere. But she won't tell hubby this while he continues sending the money.

Undoubtedly not all women are like this, but a good percentage are and men certainly stand to lose out big time if they should happen to get hooked up with the wrong sort.

If we go back a few thousand years Beetlejuice we will find that women have always done that. Men are the Hunter Gatherers and the women take care of the cave, cooking cleaning and looking after the kids. if her caveman stops bring food home for some reason of course she is going to find another caveman. how is she going to survive otherwise.

some cavemen are lucky because there cavegirl like to go hunting as well, but the problem with that is, the caveman is then expected to help clean the cave!

so we cant have it both ways can we?

  11. I hope you touched wood while typing that! :-)

I'm not superstitious... maybe I have been lucky so far. Or maybe it's because I refuse to live in farang ghettos which no doubt attract burglars.

Clearly, some people seem more prone to burglaries - why is that? It cannot simply be coincidence.

    Simon

Its luck of the draw I think. but you can better the odds by better locks, higher fences, dogs or whatever.

you may be poor, plenty of farangs are in thailand, but you still have more than many Thais.

  12. Thai Law says 30 days sick leave per year..

Kind of stingy to dock someone 772 baht when they only get 8500 anyway,...give the man a break

That's right, then he will take the piss and take more time off coz he will get paid anyway.

If he asked for holiday then should be paid if holidays are left. If he just took the days off without permission then dock his salary.

If his holidays are used up then dock his salary also.

Yes, this sounds reasonable to me, but I would like to know if anyone knows if this is according to the law, or not.

Yes it is. I have had over 100 staff under my management for 6 years. only twice was I called up to labour court and only one time I had to pay out. that was the first time. I have learnt a lot over the years and not had any problems since.

if they do not turn up and were suposed to then do not pay. the law is on your side.

if they have holiday days left and dont turn up when they were suposed to, then dont pay. they didnt get written agreement that they can have leave.

if they do not turn up for 3 days in a row without consent, fire them. the law is on your side.

Be firm but fair and you will have less problems.

I used to have an agreement with the staff. if they wanted extra days off they had to give 3 days notice for this minimum. and I would pay them or swap shifts with other staff. but no notice, no money, plus a warning to boot. it will stop straight away.

  13. In 8 years of living in Bangkok, Pattaya, Nong Khai, Krabi and Phuket - I have never been robbed, never had an intruder on the premises. No dog, no window bars, no security camera or alarm system, no gun.

Perhaps the solution to those who are unfortunate to suffer from break-ins is to adopt my solution.

    LOOK POOR! :)

  15. You helped him escape? He he that is a funny story.

Don't get the gun. I think next time you see a thief you might shoot to early because you don't want to make the same mistake. And that thief may well turn out to be the maid going to see what the noise is about.

Baseball bats work, tazers are no good as you have to get close and wouldn't be sure if it will work. Pepper spray is good too. Forget the gun.

Good locks and make sure they can't get in again.
