I can't be asked to read all the previous pages...
One question:
The couple had already checked their luggage in (since they were in the duty free area). So they could only be carrying hand luggage. Is KP really trying to make us believe that this couple took a change of clothes in their hand luggage so that they could change clothes after stealing a solitary wallet, just in case they were caught on security cameras?
Simon
I would think the "outerwear" would maybe refer to a sports jacket and cardigan .
I doubt they knew they had been caught until the security people started to approach the womans table.
they might have been sitting apart after the womans obsessive compulsive disorder had surfaced again at a very inopportune time and place which had caused an argument.
For all the people who have doubt about the video actually showing the woman placing the wallet in her bag
- there seems to be no argument that the wallet did not go missing.
- the wallet allegedly was found in the rubbish bin outside a toilet which had been visited by the man.
if this is just a sting , why would the wallet not have just been found on the woman - why the need to get all elaborate - why the need to even attempt to implicate the man ?
4. I and others have provided facts and sources. You have not.only farang for miles - have you done a stint as a ladyboy in obsessions to round out your thai experience ?

it was all very exciting when EDGE started to appear amongst the normal GPRS - but that enthusiasm dimmed when it was realised that it would not end up being ubiquitous and the actual amount of slots available crowded out most speed increases.
don't really expect the HSDA revolution to turn out much better here

We always have the Thai apologists on TV and no amount of logic or facts will change their postswell instead of hyperbole and snide remarks about naivety how about you produce some facts and logic.

I don't believe the correct fines (imposed by Customs BTW, not Excise) are in the thousands of US$ as many people were extorted into paying for just a few excess cigarettes.
Australia will calculate your fine/tax on the total goods and not just the amount in excess.
Of course if a person has already passed through Customs and is in possession of tobacco waiting for a taxi or in the arrivals area there is absolutely no proof they brought that in with them to Thailand. Possession of tobacco is not a crime as far as I am aware, correctly tax stamped or not.so what use are the tax stamps then ?

I would advise you to delete that post

I do not say they are innocent, but if they infact are guilty it would be pretty easy for Kingpower to come forward with more evidence (other CC videos etc) to close the case.
a comment from Andrew Drummond on his blog talking about this case
Yes. I have seen this video and one other. Also clips from the arrest of the Irish woman. I believe the people are the same people.so it does seem there are other pieces of video available.
just to add a thought - KP now has the issue that if they publicly prove this case now they have to deal with what it means about the district police process - I would expect nothing to happen till all the ducks are in a row on the police side.

The couple are being kept somewhere against their wishes.
You are absolutely right.
arrested on suspicion of theft - posted bail - advised that a condition of their bail was to reside at a motel
maybe they did wish to be elsewhere , but I think that is clouding the issues - you can wish for the Judicial process to work however you want but it will not change how it works.

to ventilate their shops and not let air-conditioning collect stale air.
I did not think this was airborne ? maybe some disinfection is required to prevent foo

...and if they were changing their clothes, outerwear clothing
cardigan and sportsjacket probably - the air conditioning might have been working well

In light of the footage showing the couple clearly stealing, its fairly obvious why they didn't want the embassy to help settle the matter legally.
if the footage is not fake , , if they are the same couple , , if they did steal the wallet , - these are the arguments for it being a scam.
I think if you knew you had stolen and you realised the evidence that had been shown to you would get you convicted in Thailand and you had the resources , you would be hauling out the chequebook.
maybe there is an obsessive-compulsive disorder.
As "Stumonster" wrote:no I did not write that
why do I get the feeling that thedon is back ??

you must be extremely naive to believe that it doesn't happen to others are innocent.
your ability to read between the lines is excellent
I would imagine you would be quick to pay any price if you knew the rules of evidence were not the same as your home country

This is not the type of scenario where you can demand to speak to an attorney, or make a phone call. This is a scenario where you feel isolated and tangibly threatened - and where paying big money quickly seems like the only way out of one's h#llish situation.
from the original story
Vijitpokin and a colleague, Kittamert Engchountada, of the Lawyers Association of Thailand, urged them to stay in the country to fight the case and have since assembled a dossier for potential prosecutions.so they ignored the legal advice and paid

I rather think you have missed the point of the scam which is to coerce the victim into participating because not to do so would mean up to a year at least in Thailand negotiating what passes for a judicial system. That's why the scammers operate at the airport....so near but yet so far.
Or alternatively, the point is that which so evidently sailed over your head, Stumonster.
maybe the point has sailed right over my head as you have so eloquently put it.
maybe a slow and inefficient court process should not be in place - but having sympathy for people , who if they are guilty , paying money so they can bypass it to me is missing the point.
you look at the different attitude of the masses when some one is caught with drugs - breaking the law in thailand - what would be their position if they had read a story about paying massive bribes to get home ?
they broke the law - if they are guilty - in Thailand . Legal process anywhere in the world is not designed to ensure no one misses their flight.

I wonder why all posters are focusing on whether the couple is guilty in this case. Even if they are, due legal process was not respected, and it's still a scam and instance of gross corruption. Is it somehow OK to kidnap and extort a thief, instead of delivering the legal punishment -- be it prison or proper fine. Somehow, I doubt scammers are picky as to who they frame.
The couple had *not* been granted bail by the court and then left/forfeited it. They have a paper stating that there are *no charges* filed against them. Thai police and legal system claim they *did not steal*, no matter what the low-res King Power video implies. Yet their money ended up in various private pockets, most of it probably with Thai police.
Your post is spot on and happens to highlight a peculiarity of the Thai and their curious take on morality.
the point really is about whether this couple are guilty of shoplifting - if they are not guilty , then they have been scammed.
if they are guilty , and instead of following the process of Thai law they have attempted to circumvent the system and pay their way out and paid well over what a Thai would have paid to get off a charge such as this - why should our sympathy lie with them ?
Do you think the Thai tourist authority should issue tourists with the correct procedure for buying your way out of trouble ?

still believe in this fake news, without using their brain
If this (fake news) happen in Singapore, the paper will have its license removed very quickly.
I thought it was a proven fact that media corp rotted your brain ?
the idea that the singapore govt operated media corporation only prints/televised the truth is laughable.

Interesting that the Malaysian news reports deposed Prime Minister Thaksin as a holder of Hong Kong, UK and German passports. (No mention of Nicaragua.) r heels in over Honduras?
echoing the other posters ? where is the information that he holds these passports ?
I would think he is maybe enroute for Nicaragua now - he might have had his marching orders from the middle east.

check your computers to see if something is running in the background using bandwidth
throttle bitlord to an up/down limit
how are you determining
gets all the bandwidth -
The procedure is that KP have evidence that they did the crime. At the time of the incident there was insufficient evidence (or should we say KP security were not clever enough to make a case).
I would say that if the matter had gone to court they would have been convicted by the Thai courts - only the payments ensured the case was dropped.
so far what KP has produced has shown themselves in a favourable light - to be expected . I don't think it is a scam to be prosecuting people for shoplifting , but if there is also a forced shoplifting scam happening then KP management should be able to determine that from security video reviews - even if security is in on it they can not be wiping selected portions of video without incriminating themselves enough to be guilty here.
but the next step I see KP being forced to do is to instruct their managers not to accept restitution being paid by the criminal for a shoplifting charge to be rescinded - though this might help stop any forced shoplifting scam it will mean that there will be quite a few westerners waiting for court dates.
I wonder what the figures are for shoplifting arrests in Singapore and Hong Kong ? it might give a rough clue as to how prevalent this crime is.

have they been charged or summonsed to give statements ?

for any cd/dvd you could just install daemon tools light on your netbook and it will give you a virtual cd - then just create an image of the cd and copy it to a usb stick , plug in and tell daemon tools to mount the iso image. obviously you will need a computer with a cd/dvd to make the image first
I make image copies of all disks as they are easily scratched/damaged.
does the 1000H have bluetooth ? get a logitech bluetooth mouse - I use one with my laptop.

windows media player is one of the first things I will uninstall from a new windows installation - WMP6 was the last good version.
try the klite - standard should be good enough for most users

or maybe media Player Classic Home Cinema

VLC has just achieved version 1 status though I am not overly enamoured of the player and think it is mainly useful if you want to set up a sever to stream your media
