  1. We so often hear criticism about TOT, the worst ISP etc. Well, for once I think they should be praised for their service. I live in a moo baan near Sankamphaeng and have no choice as to the ISP- only TOT is connected

Just over a month ago I was ( or at least I thought I was) getting slow download speeds. After talking with them I found that most speedtests give widely varying results ( covered in earlier thread). I settled on 'speedtest.or.th' as the most reliable.

I then wanted to upgrade to an upload speed of 1 MB. I simply could not get it to work. TOT were very good, I even got a call at 10.30 on a Sunday night over the long holiday weekend from a technician ( manager I think) trying to help me.

A technician came and found that it was my old modem that would not take the higher speed, he spoke good english. He phoned the local TOT office to arrange for a new modem ( special offer 550Baht). I went to collect it, a few snags getting it to work, but then fine.

Since then I've had very good speeds, both up and down and no outages. This service was as good if not better than I'd expect in the UK, better because getting someone out to your home is expensive

So I say 'well done TOT' praise where praise is due.

    Thanks

  2. For expensive good quality ones go to Airport Plaza - Robinson or Kad Suan Kaew -Central

Not difficult. you can also buy kettles, toasters, grills, coffeemakers, cups and plates there

UGH!!!!! Wednesday 9.30 am, just been told by phone by someone who knows some of the people onboard that one body has been found and that it crashed. So much for the veracity of news reporting here!

  4. Apparantly helicopter carrying Forestry officials took off from Pitsanulock at about 7 this morning and then was lost after about 20 minutes. Seems not to have been found yet, but people are searching. Does not look good for the 6 people on board

Does anyone have more up to date news?

  5. From memory, and it was around 5 years when wifey and i bought all our stuff over.

We didn't bring anything that couldn't be packed into teachest sized cardboard boxes as this kept the shipping costs low.

My wife is Thai so everything was in her name.

We used a shipping agent who took are of it door to door.

When it arrived in BKK they called us and told us how much customs wanted in 'under the table'(their actual words!) payment.

In all we had about 15 boxes, total declared was about 2500 GBP but real value somewhat higher. We paid about 10k bht import "tax" and I think shipping costs were only about 800GBP.

Before we shipped we had to list every single item we were sending and the value, very tedious and time consuming.

As for the Tv and xbox, sorry I do not know if they will work over here but if you can get whatever in your luggage I doubt if you will get stopped for duty.

As for the mattress, it's very big and will cost alot to ship and you can pick up really nice ones here for 10 to 15k bht so your choice.

Sorry no smartphone so wiser heads can comment on that.

Best of luck in your new job too.

I used a UK company called Seven Seas worldwide' They give you strong cardboard boxes and ship by sea. About 7 boxes cost as I recall, about £300 and took about 7 weeks. door to door. On arrival the agent phoned me, Customs want to see your original passport. It all came in duty free. A friend of mine is using them now and they told him only 2 electrical items allowed, but I'm sure he brought in more. Small items - kettles etc, are better bought here. ( all done in my name(brit) they wil want to see a copy of your visa, I think it can't be done on a tourist visa, mine was retirement)

iPhones can be unlocked here in Chiang Mai so I'm sure you can do that in BKK

  6. We used a guy who used to fit furniture in hotels to make wardrobes and to cut up and remake an old wardrobe.. He's very good, reasonably priced but slow. Not sure if he could do very large work, like floors etc as he works alone -well with his wife who is not well.

If this is of interest PM me

    Cheers

  7. Anybody outhere in Chiangmai know of a good Thai Private Teacher tried a school but asI read and write Thai found it a slow process as with other sudents whos Thai was limited and was not to impressed with the teacher or the method not the only one in the class to be of that opinion. So private teacher would be better so any suggestions would be welcomed

    F.T.P

AUA is still your best bet, overall....

Thai classes by day, English classes by night :o

FORGET AUA!!! Went there tried it, don't like it- the books are 30 years old Just down the same road (Ratchadamnoen?? (sp) is the Thai language Centre, just past the cross roads - a yellow faced building that serves food. The teachers are great, adaptable/flexible and it's fun. tel 053 277810

About 250 Baht/hour solo, cheaper if more

  8. I know it's been asked before, but I like Schweppes slimline tonic in my gin. I'm not happy with 7 spoonfuls of sugar with every can of 'normal' tonic it rots your teeth and makes you even fatter!

The frustration is I used to work for the company that made Schweppes tonic and saw them making it- citric acid, aspartame, etc but I've not got the recipe/ formula

I've tried soda water/ lime/ etc, but it's not the same

    Anyone have any clues?

    BTW

Please can I ask that we do not go off on a tangent about the ?? carcinogenicity of aspartame/ the taste differences etc. I would really like to know if anyone has come up with a decent alternative. If no I may be forced to sneak back to the UK and steal the formula!

    thanks

  9. OOPS I'm beginning to wish I never asked the question!!

But as a total idiot, let me just say I have ( at about7.00 pm ) downloaded 950 Mb from an apple server ( I know no where!!) to update my software. It took about 25 minutes! the fastest I've ever had!

    does that help the discussion?

  10. I would use the TOT suggested speedtest.or.th site to check your local speed/IP speed to DSLAM as it's probably less used, less loaded down than other servers like Speedtest.net, etc. Keep in mind your actual max speed, or "IP" speed, on the TOT plans will be approx 5-15% less than max sync speed (6.144Mb max sync in your case for a 6Mb plan) due to the DSL control/management bits. I'm on the TOT 4Mb plan and pull a rock stead 3.5Mb speed (IP speed) when using speedtest.or.th 24/7, rain or shine. The 5.8Mb you were getting is good!

Now when you use other speed test sites, you will probably get widely varying results due their capacity/capability, number of people using them, etc., especially when doing international speed tests but also for in-Thailand tests. I find the ThaiVisa speed test to almost always give me the lowest readings.

Now if you are concerned about not getting 6.144Mb speed, you must keep in mind on the TOT ADSL current plans the DSL control bits subtract from your max data/IP speed. You can check if you are getting full 6.144Mb sync speed by logging onto your modem and looking under whatever menu gives you your device/modem status & statistics like Download and Upload "Sync" speed, Signal to Noise, Attenuation, etc.

    Cheers.

Thanks I'll relax and stick with 'or.th'

  11. Hi, I'm lost when it comes to all of this!. I had a problem with speeds with my 6Mb TOT line. TOT ( who were great - 10.30 at night on Sunday!!) suggested I test with Speedtest.or.th (Ookla) with that I get close to maximum. If I test with others- Speedtest.net, ADSL Thailand or Thai visa ( all Ookla too) then i get speeds of 4 or less, one even down to less than 2. Ping varies too, one was ? 500 m/s when typically 27

TOT say or.th is the 'official' one but which one should I beileve.

I tested this morning within a few minutes of each other ,started with or.th then the other Ookla ones and finished with another or.th test to confirm that was still giving me fast readings

I've attached JPEGS of the tests

If anyone has a clue I'd be happy.

  12. Many of the pesticides etc are oil based, so washing them in a suitable detergent makes sense, I think there are commercially available one that claim to be ? organic?? biodegradable? you name it. If it's salad ,clearly you can't boil it.

Better still to avoid fruit from China! .

  13. I'm new to this, and have spent several day starting to construct a website using 'supergreen', a UK/US host. Very nice. Everything working fine. Then last night it seizes up. Lots of emails to the support team, who are REALLY good BTW. With help I find an alternative route to access some parts. They trace the route and I appear connected and there are no issues at their end. Using a VPN doesn't improve things. After lots of work, I start to get a VERY slow connection, then finally around 2.00 pm today, I get the line back, but slow. Now, 6.00 pm, it's back up to speed.

One thing they found ( about 1.00 pm today) is that my password had been changed- who did that? When it was reset I started to get limited access which improved over time

Neither they nor I did anything but TIT, Who did it?

PS if Yaabaa reads this, I'm sorry I have no proof, you just have to believe me. Maybe I'll write a paper for a magazine ( sorry learned journal) and get it peer reviewed, but in the meantime, please just hold on in there. Darkened rooms are recommended

  14. There's a bike shop just opposite Nyom Panich ( well, a little bit before, coming out of town), on the road to Airport Plaza, can't remember his name sorry. He got me Dunlops for my Kawa boss and may be able to help you. He works on many big bikes, but not seen yours there.
