  1. Straight from Power Commander Website; performed on a Versys, not sure year model but little to nothing has changed - as one can see, very little performance increase except in the lower throttle range where Torque matters more than HP which is typical with add-on fuel injection computers; torque gets you going faster from start, not horse power and one can see there is no torque measurement provided which is typical from after market fuel controller providers unless you are going with something like MOTEC or another very high end race computer application because they don't want to show this number because generally it's 0-2 (sometimes nothing) or even in some cases less than factory specs.

Additionally it doesn't state, or maybe I missed something, so feel free to correct me, are any other things that where changed such as exhaust, air filter, spark plugs, etc which would invalidate the computers added performance as a stand alone add-on performance improver. So without this additional information, if something else was changed you won't get the same performance increase. Is this worth approximately 15,000+ baht after import fees and shipping, some would say yes, some would say no.

It's all a matter of what one wants but the fact is this type of performance gain in regards to improved speed or power is minimal at best. Bike or car might idle better or have smoother transition throughout the throttle range BUT that doesn't equate to improved performance in relation to power and it is also in relations to environmental conditions such as atmospheric pressure, air temp, etc.

I thought this what I said this a week ago:

"What is not debatable is that one can make the bike run better than the factory as one is not constrained by emissions or noise regulations. On a stock bike the descerning rider will see smoother running and no dead spots in throttle response. On a slightly modified bike it is far more noticable and almost a given when one starts increasing air flow through the engine."

Perhaps I need to be a bit clearer

  2. I beg to disagree as this is not how PC Autotuner works

The PC Autotune logs AFR under real world loaded conditions and then suggests a trim to bring the AFR to your specified ratio. It does not change the fuel/ignition maps on its own. This specified ratio can be what ever custom map you enter or a canned map based on variables such as pipe, air filter etc.

It is difficult to imagine any more accurate method than datalogging under actual riding conditions, as opposed to the operator dependent inertia dyno using the test, fiddle, retest, repeat procedure. The PC-V with Autotuner will give you an exact AFR of 13.1 under loaded conditions (specific to your weight) at all RPM and throttle position - what can be more accurate than that?

My personal experience, and from what I have read, suggests that a properly run bike on PC Autotuner is equal to or better than what a good operator can achieve a dyno. This is done at a lower cost, quicker, something that a savy Owner can easily do. Here in CM there is no dyno, and more importantly if there was one, it would need someone who really knows what they are doing.

When you start changing engine internals is where the Autotuner really shines as it is virtually idiotproof.

The Lambda sensor is in fact removed and by-passed so the factory ECU cannot fiddle with the new map, and not because you are running too rich. If it is too rich you have the wrong map and need to go through the Autotune procedure

Does it make a significant amount more power? 7 Hp on a Versys is 10% and IMHO a significant increase. That this is due to the Autouner and PCV alone is questionable, but believable in conjunction with a pipe and air filter/air box mods.

What is not debatable is that one can make the bike run better than the factory as one is not constrained by emissions or noise regulations. On a stock bike the descerning rider will see smoother running and no dead spots in throttle response. On a slightly modified bike it is far more noticable and almost a given when one starts increasing air flow through the engine.

Internal engine mods demand changes to the ECU

  3. I am doing the Autotune procedure on my PCV now.

There is no way around the fact that if you want more power then you need to burn more fuel. OTOH if smooth running with no dead spots are your goal then the PC can do that as well

It all depends on the fuel map you use. In my case I really do not give a toss about the minimal increase in fuel consumption, and am going for max power throught the rev range.

You could have a happy medium and lean it out at crusisng speeds, then more fuel at WFO. For example 13.6:1 AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) at 20% throttle and 5-6000 rpm and 13.1 at 75% throttle

"Up to you" and tune it "as you wish"

  4. I want to fit either high intensity driving lights or a headlight modulator for extra visibility in the hope that the local drivers will at least see me a bit better. I think that the modulator will achieve this a bit better than more lights

Are modulators legal in Thailand, or more correctly are they specifically disallowed in the event that Mr. Plod decides to make an issue of it

  5. Went there last night.

Great food, large portions, decent prices, happy hour on stiff margeritas, and a friendly Owner. In fact the Owner took it upon himself to send us over samples of several menu offerings until we almost burst.

Highly recommended and will be going back with friends.

  6. The Versys is a good bike but lacking in brake and suspension department. As posted the stock suspension is better than the ER, but still could do with improving and fine tuning to suit your weight.

The subject of brake improvement has been posted. If this does not suit your needs or expectations, then the next step would be 4 pot radial calipers and a Nissin radial MC.

Overkill perhaps but much better feel and as they say up to you. I now have all the parts in hand to do this and waiting to get into Westfield Pattaya to make up the stainless lines for the ABS plumbing

Kawi saw fit to equip the Versys with one functional cartridge fork leg and a pogo stick on the other side. It is a simple matter to fit the missing parts that the Accountants saw fit not to include, however be prepared to revalve the cartridges to suit your weight, and use different fork oil. See my posts on GT Rider on this subject

The rear shock could do with some improvement and there are a lot of off the shelf solutions. Beware of progressive spring rates on the canned solution, and be sure that the one supplied suits your weight and riding sytle. IMHO the Hyperpro spring for example is not suitable for a single rider of my 78 Kg weight

Again, see my posts on GT Rider regarding fitting an R-1 shock to the Verysys

All in all the Versys is a good bike. It can be a much better bike with a bit of knowledge and work.

    Enjoy

  7. I posted this in the Biker forum, but hopefully the Mods will allow this double post as the event is here in CM

On Friday, 8 JUNE 2012 Chiang Mai ToyRide (CMTR) will ride to a school located behind a temple in Chiang Dao. This school provides for some 60 children of various ethnic and Hill Tribe backgrounds. Also attending will be 30 children from a nearby nursery school (1.5km), which is not easily accessible due to it’s mountain location.

CMTR will be providing the children with many personal items, book bags, and of course a fun day of partying with toys, games, clowns and snacks. Although the event will be held at the temple location, both schools will receive school supplies, books, lockers, tables, chairs and playground equipment, and more, as requested by the teachers.

The nursery school has a new building which was previously built by donations and volunteers from overseas, however, the building was not able to be used as it lacked an electrical hookup, wiring and outlets. The children were not able to use the building due to the unfinished construction and the heat. We are having the ceiling, wiring and other equipment installed, along with 9 wall fans and other items as necessary so that this school can be used.

Come join us! As usual for our giveaway events we are only asking for your participation. All items have been purchased with donations and sponsorship money that we received through our annual main Chiang Mai ToyRide celebration in February.

We will assemble at Tesco Lotus Kamtieng and depart at 10:30AM. The ride to Chiang Dao is 65km on Highway 107. It will be all paved roads to the temple/school event location. We will NOT be riding to the more isolated nursery school. This will be a rain or shine event.

(Lotus Kamtieng is the main location on the Super Highway, Hwy 11, north side of Chiang Mai.)

    Visit http://chiangmaitoyride.com/?p=1634 for more information.

    See you there!!

  9. There are currently several issues with Green Valley management and the Homeowners are going to attempt to form a Homeowners Assoc and take over management of the project as allowed in the law.

Anyone intrested in either what is going on behind the scenes or in joining such an Association, please PM me

  10. The big event is tomorrow and we hope to see you all there as this is our main fundraising event for the year and the success of this ride determines how much we can help these disadvantaged children throughout the upcoming year.

9:45AM Meet at Tesco Lotus Khamtien for the ride/parade through Chiang Mai, ending up at the X-Centre in Mae Rim

Looks like the weather will cooperate and not be too hot

  11. Good to see Classic Cars of Lanna helping kids along the lines of what we as motorcyclists do as the Chiangmai ToyRide - www.chiangmaitoyride.com

Too bad that I will be out of town on that day, but look forward to attneding one of your events with my 39 street rod.

I trust that you will have a great event and good on you

  12. I am looking for a stereo head unit with GPS capability that uses Garmin maps. I see on-line that Kenwood has teamed up with Garmin, but other than this I know nothing.

Either double DIN or the flip out screen type will work as this is a custom installation

My local high end shop in CM has no idea

Anyone familiar with one of these units?
