  1. They'll tell you how to get there though, even if it's in the opposite direction, so they don't lose face. They translate that to trying to be helpful anyway. A Thai will never tell you they don't know something.
  2. The violence in Thailand is off the charts and just below the surface. Just yesterday in the next village a man murdered his sister because she refused to give him money to buy drugs. I doubt we'll read of it here, and it makes you wonder how much other slaughter goes on that we never read about. Another time, also in a nearby village, a man shot a kid dead for taking apples from his tree. That was settled by the murderer paying compensation to the kid's father, and no police got involved. Yet another time, the director of my nephew's nearby school was murdered by his wife as she thought he was having an affair. He wasn't. Interesting for a pretend Buddhist nation.
  3. Well that's in depth reporting! ????Pulitzer material??? And she also isn't pressing charges. Nothing to see here - move on.
  4. Just because some - in your words, nobody - cares doesn't make it right. Maybe I care as I'm a journalist and to me language precision is essential. Although, seemingly, less so as the world dumbs down. I can understand though that many don't give a rat's fart about whether something is correct or not. Depends on your standards, i suppose.
  5. My initial reaction was that the OP was in Big C and had wanted to pay by card and was asked for his passport. That has been reported before. But then it turned out that not only did it not happen in Big C but it didn't happen to him at all, and nor did he see it happen. It was, to all intents and purposes, bar stool talk. Do you now see the reason for being precise? Prevents any misunderstandings. And then he started throwing a word he doesn't understand back at me and talking about men on the moon!
  6. When did this happen? Both are wearing facemasks, even though Covid pretty much stopped being a major problem at least a year ago. At least, it did in most countries of the world. Is Thailand still at major risk, and shouldn't TAT warn tourists?
  7. Thank you for your comment. I see nothing wrong in being precise, but that's me. There are others who don't care and even find it offensive, probably to cover their own inadequacies.
  8. What has that got to do with this report? Where did you read the police were at fault and this bus was speeding and running a red light? What I read is that they suspect the driver fell asleep while driving, as numerous Thais tend to do. So, what is the source that you based your alternative reality statement on, please? If there isn't one, why did you write something that had nothing to do with this report?
  9. Go on. Keep digging your hole deeper and deeper, making yourself look sillier every time
  10. Sorry, your misunderstanding of English strikes again. The new Thai government is a FACT. Murderers DO end up in prison, FACT. They are not hearsay, which my dictionary describes as rumour. Neither of the two examples you give me are rumours. Fact and hearsay are very different things, which clearly you fail to understand. Just drop it before you dig another hole. You said two different things in the headline and opening post. Just accept it instead of sending me sarcastic posts.
  11. You still reported something that is hearsay, wherever what you didn't witness did or did not happen.
  12. Some months before the soggy season was due we were warned that this year it would be drier than usual. My experience has been that it's the second-wettest I remember in the last 25 years.
  13. Especially if you race them in the rain.
  14. Yes. Everyone who has ever been on the road in Thailand knows that.
  15. In the headline the poster wrote he says at Big C. He then says near Big C. There's a difference. I'm guessing this is a troll from someone who didn't even see what happened himself but was 'told' by a vendor. Nothing to see here, folks.... Move on.
  16. Pretty stupid and irrelevant comment to make, when he was on a bus and the crooks made all the advances. He was targeted. And what led you to think he was rich. Rich Arabs don't go to Pattaya. They go to places where they can enjoy opulence and luxury, which are rare - read non-existent - commodities in Pattaya.
  17. Many people still don't think of CCTV. My favourite tale, reported on this site some time ago, was of a woman who owned a women's clothing store and who installed CCTV to catch shoplifters, but instead it caught her stealing from a customer's bag while she was trying on a dress in a cubicle.
  18. That's the Thai system. He has spoken, made his recommendations, and his job is done. Anything that happens later is not his responsibility. You, I, he and everyone else knows that what is said will be ignored and is unenforceable, but that is not the point. He has acted, done what he considers to be his job, while actually doing nothing. This happens all the time, at least once a week. Someone makes a declaration and the next day it's ignored and forgotten. But that person has done their job by 'acting'.
  19. So many comments here from people who read a headline but can't be bothered to read the report before posting. Memo to them: Doing that makes you look foolish.
  20. Did you read the linked article? What you've written has no connection to what happened, none at all.
  21. Good that you wrote usually, but try to get a taxi to use the meter in Pattaya or Phuket or Khon Kaen or others, all of which actually have residents, not only tourists.
  22. Whether something is illegal or not has no relevance in Thailand. Full stop.
  23. Nor is he is afraid of any repercussions for breaking the law. I once called the taxi complaint number and they told me to call the tourist police. I called the tourist police and they told me to call the taxi complaint number.
  24. His vow to make America great again has had the same effect as Vlad Putrid's vow to discourage Ukraine and others from joining NATO ie he achieved exactly the opposite. In the case of Trump, the damage to America's image that he and his ignorant and sometimes rabid supporters have caused is incalculable.
  25. You've got me wondering if it's worth my popping back there to seek out a similar driver ...
