Family tragedy: Father’s triple murder-suicide linked to loan scam
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
She initially borrowed 100,000 baht but was tricked into transferring over 1 million baht to various accounts for processing fees. I read a few months ago that scammers target Thais because they're so gullible, Here's one. -
Something for the tourists to film and photograph and tell everyone back home about. You don't find many places where you can enjoy a good fight for the price of your ticket. But seriously, there is so much violence lurking just below the surface in Thailand. Fortunately for us, they just fight and injure and kill each other.

Memories are short. A month after the tsunami I had to go to Phuket on business and phoned a hotel I found to make a booking. They sounded so dis-interested that I called again the next day to check they had my booking, and they didn't. Whoever I spoke to wasn't interested in having guests in his empty rooms, it seems.

Pheu Thai Popularity Rating Drops To 10%: Sripatum Poll
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I think many of the people who favoured Pheu Thai before have since moved on and voted for Move Forward as PT didn't really offer anything new. The 10% grassroots loyal are all the party has left. -
PM to look into extending tourist visas to 90 days

Thanks for the responses to my post and opening my eyes to what exists in Hua Hin. -
PM to look into extending tourist visas to 90 days
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
How many people do you know that take more than a 30 day vacation at a time? I'd say that 30 days is more than enough for all but a tiny, tiny percentage of people. Those who are wealthy and have more time on their hands choose far better places than Thailand with its many shortcomings to spend their time and money. I doubt that Thailand is on many rich people's list of places to spend months at a time. -
Social Media “Outraged” Over Erotic Show in Pattaya
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
I think you missed the several times that the author mocked the 'concern' of the people who were disappointed that the pristine image of Thailand was being sullied. She quite cleverly took the pi** out of them without quite saying they need to get a life. A well-written article, although I do question, as a journalist, the legitimacy of combining a news item with sarcastic comments. There is news reporting, and there are commentary pieces, and they are not usually combined. -
How To Avoid The 'Wham Bam, Thank You' Scam
Bangkok Barry replied to Brewster67's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Me too. She wasn't a bar girl (she worked in Tokyu department store on the information counter), which helps I suppose, although some marriages to bar girls do work long-term. A factor might have been that she was 30 and that is about the time that a girl in Thailand is considered too old by then to get married. We've now been married over 32 years. Sometimes I have to count to 10, occasionally to 100, but it's worked. I visited an introduction agency. Do they still exist now? Anyway, I picked her out and we met for the first time on her birthday, which is pretty amazing. The person who ran the agency was a friend of hers and spouse claims she was just hanging around the office one day and had her photos taken for fun. Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't matter. The owner sorted out all the paperwork. I don't remember how much it was, and we married in the Bang Rak office. Why so quick? I travelled pretty much full-time for work as a journalist and was actually in transit from New Zealand to the USA and had limited time before I needed to move on. She got a US visa at the second attempt (first time not as we weren't married, second time okay after marriage, and we were wished good luck) and off we went. -
Drunken Benz Driver Threatens Motorcyclist with Gun

Priceless -
I pay 1750 for three months for all the sports channels, news, movies, tv series. I'd rather pay that than deal with ads and buffering. Works fine most (98%?) of the time. Needs a box but great service that I've used for years. Whatever method you use, it appears that a VPN is becoming more and more necessary as the Thai internet companies like to throttle the service in the evenings.

You do know that Thailand is known by many here as the Land of Scams? So be very careful. The #1 motive is to get your money. The first time I went to a dentist here, not very long after I arrived, I was told I needed three teeth extracted. I thought not, left, and still have those teeth 26 years later. Another time I was told I needed root canal surgery. Same story. And away from dentists, someone I used to know felt in need of some TLC and made up a story about hurting his neck in a taxi accident. His family took him to a hospital where they not only found a non-existent injury to treat and charge for, but backed it up with an x-ray and advice that he spend two nights in the hospital. So be wary. And good luck.

Srettha is the world’s second tallest leader
Bangkok Barry replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Two seconds reading the headline was more than enough. But I'm posting this headline on Facebook as an indication of what counts as news here. The Sun in the UK might pick it up, and you can't get dumber than that. Seriously, I'm stunned that this could ever be considered as news. And now I'll get a warning for commenting on what is considered news on this site -
I apologise for not reading something that isn't there. I can see nowhere above that you have said other companies as well as FB should be blocked. The only reference to others I can see is Facebook, and other big social media companies, are not going broke by appointing a few moderators in each country. So perhaps you can point out to me where you did so. As it isn't, as you claim, very clear. Thank you.

A momentary lapse, I'm sure, as I assume you've been in Thailand long enough to always, always, always look both ways. Even on a one-way street.

When a fake profile is set up - which is what this thread is about - and then reported, it is removed very quickly. And you completely ignored what I said about other platforms being as bad or worse than FB. I wonder why you think that only FB be blocked, and not emails because they have scams too, or Twitter/X because they have people there sending death threats. I assume, although you didn't say, you believe that email and Twitter/X should be blocked too. Otherwise, your only picking on FB makes no sense. Fake ads and spam on FB means it must be blocked, but death threats and spam on other platforms are okay?
