  1. The Latitude app creates/recommends routes to take, and then displays the routes on the map screen.

This is astonishing since the bus guide maps to buy at the bookshops etc only show the central bangkok routes... This app can show a route from off-the-beaten-track area to another suburban area.

There seems to be no way to just display a bus route. You must put, in a start and end point.

Any suggestions to work out the routes....? The source for Latitude gives none of the info Latitude must possess. So where is it really extracting this unique information.

  2. Well at the moment you need good legs. Showing breast is a "no no". You're probably going to to tower over most Thai men, so wear something flat, gladiator sandals are a good option. You will also need a good handbag and a decent mobile, you will be judged by these. Thai men can be lovely, but they also expect you to know your place, so don't be too assertive at the beginning. If you really love him and he loves you you'll get it together. Expect a lot of problems from the family, the first baby will sort that out.

Gladiator sandals ... That is so 2011.

  3. Thau poppy pop songs all use the same words. You vocubulary acquisition can be done here:

    Rak

    Kit teung

    Tammai mai kit teung

    Tammai mai toh

    Arai wa

    Sia jai

    Yahk dtai

    And that's it.

Start with Bird Thongchai. He's the guy who sings the beautiful Royal Anthem in the cinemas (you will not be able to follow the anthem, and nor can thais).

  4. These police equipment shops are a dime a dozen in the boonies (i saw 3 in tiny chiang rai), but are tricky to find in bangkok.

I had to hand in my pepper spray at chiang mai airport and want some more urgently before i get dog attacked again.

The two i've used are the one opposite suan plu immigration, and the one inside the government complex. Both provide packaged, genuine spray imported from the USA.

Any others in west bangkok or near bts stops?

    Thank you in advance.

( please avoid digressing topic into discussion of said item, for i expect i am the only lawyer in the thread. Cheers)

  5. Looks like Nok Air is ok. They state on their booking page:

"For International credit card payments (credit cards issued outside Thailand), the cardholder must present the credit card at the airport check-in counter for physical verification. Otherwise, Nok Air reserves the right to deny boarding."

That implicitly allows the Thai-produced Kasikorn Bank card....

    Any thoughts?

  6. Won't be long and we will have a thread on where to get a bullet proof vest.

I personally think many of these people will find all their answers in the Hospital on the South West corner of the moat.

The vest is classed as a weapon of war in Thailand, and so requires written permission from the Defence Ministry. So you won't be getting one from anywhere.

  7. Go to Chula medical library (next to canteen on north part of campus), pay 30 baht and borrow book for a few minutes, photocopy entire book downstairs within 20 minutes, get new book bound, pay 30 satang per page, praise oneself for a problem solved.

    Done it myself.

Check books availability on online library search engine.

  8. There are some scandalous comments on this thread.

    FACT: tesco tea tastes terrible

FACT: PG and Yorkshire and Tetley have a distinct flavour. They are not simply strong.

I tend to buy 4 packs of PG at a time from Topps. Would prefer Tetley and Yorkshire but they don't exist here....

Now it is a scientific FACT that every Englishmen must drink a good cuppa every day. There is no actual evidence for this, but it is a scientific fact.

  9. I scammed the scammer.

Buying a cute wig for Hallowean i was told the price is 850 baht. When i pointed out it was 550 at pratunam acrosd the street he said they are brand goods only at his shop.

He walks off, i go to buy the wig. His colleague asks how much his colleague asked for. Oh.... It was 450 baht, i said. And that's how much i paid.

  10. I use Paiboon for around an hour everyday and it clearly is the best on the market.

But i use a free app called aedict for japanese, and it constantly reminds me of the poor and costly choices for Thai. Like the aedict, each word should have 10 or more sample sentences that display the word order and the nuances of its use.

Lets take an example, the thai word for substitute, 'theam'.

How do you use it.... Well you can't find out from paiboon.

    Perhaps:

    * I-want-substitute-object (banana)-object(strawberry)-in-cocktail.

    When you want to say:

"I want to substitute the bananas for strawberries in my cocktail".

Or perhaps another word order. We don't know from paiboon.

  11. 3. The man's mental health is a factor.

One doesn't know as there is no statement of whether or not a mental health assessment was made. There is no indication of whether or not the man was on medication. Some medications cause very aberrant behaviour.

Warning: This medicine may cause you to Gbecome sexually attracted to children and force you to molest multiple children and amass child pornography that you will be compelled to share with your friends overseas.

The level of hysteria being displayed on here by some allegedy intelligent people is quite simply shocking.

I don't think anyone is trying to allege members of thaivisa are intelligent. You can't go around making such accusations .....

  12. There is a research group i attend which is frequented by many famous historians/thinkers/reporters.

Then i attend a more populist Royal Society-type club.

I read insatiably. Most of the old great works are online . If not, Thammasat , Chula or Mahidol normally have the books.

I write articles published in magazines or peer reviewed journals.

And i associate with other intelligent people.

Very satisfying life here, since the pursuit of understanding is very cheap here. All books can be photocopied ; all clubs are free; journal articles are free; and you have easy access to the educated elite.

  13. Any pointers for a very specific plan:

On both the serious stock collapses I missed out on buying in to the bottom of the market. The second time was because Fidelity said they had new ID checks making it impossible to even redeem funds already held, let alone buy new funds.

Finally, I have jumped all the loops at Fidelity only for them to declare Thailand is a restricted market and they cannot allow me to buy funds from my location in Thailand.

I want to be able to buy funds at a cheap entrance rate that are close copies of the funds I have now that I anticipate will collapse again when Greece exits the Euro. These funds include Eastern Europe, South America, China, Property Commerical UK and so on.

The funds mentioned above seem to have no discount on them or are Thailand-centred. Is there anything else out there...?

  14. Sadly, women become slaves to skin color and beauty starting in childhood. Recently a Chula coed killed herself because her 'friends' said she wasn't pretty. Sad.

I hope this woman survives ... after all, unlike in the West, she was supporting family members.

A good example of the dangers of believing news reports. We know from further investigations that there is not even one baht of truth in this.

  15. If before 7:20pm, take the boat as suggested by above posters.

If between 7:20 and 8:30, and it's a weekday then you could take the BTS to national stadium and take the canal boat. At the last stop, grab the 511 bus, at Pata take a 146 or 149 to Sirirat.

If after 8:30pm then take BTS to Wongwianyai, walk across Wongwianyai and take 149 bus or the very regular songtaew to sirirat.

If BTS is closed, then walk up Wireless road and catch 511 bus on sukhumwit.

If post 3am you are trapped with no hope and must wait for the first chao praya boats at about 6 am.
