  1. 400,000 less in the bank is a big plus to me.

I think you've answered your own question here.

as long as you remember that when/if the marriage ends thro death or divorce of your spouse, you will need the funds to finance the retirement extension once again, dont rely solely on the 400,000 as you will then 800,000 once again.

Although there is a chance of this ending from death, it is slight as she is 20 years my junior.

  2. If you buy the land what 'Protection' are you expecting to have....pre nups dont have any power, set up a company(dont think so) lease the land, yes is legal but if you were ever to part....would you really want to live in a house in a village of 10 other houses surrounded by your ex??? probably not, any chance odf selling it, probably not...only to your x's family or friends at a knock down price....just curious, is there any other protection foreigners can have???

In Nong Bua they want 100,000 per rai for farm land on a main highway no chanote though.

I plan to buy in mother in laws name. Some people can just be trusted.

  3. You still show great pride in your extracurricular activities. I on the other hand, am embarrassed to admit that it took me 20+ years of play before I moved on to other things.

I don't mean to be rude, but 20+ years? Sounds like a product of growing older, rather than any great awakening. I have to wonder, how many of these people on Thai Visa who have "moved on to other things" fit in the same category? :)

It's been 30+ years for me and have known I will end up in Thailand for nearly that amount of time. So it does not have to be a product of growing older.

It was much more pleasant in several places because the level of tourism was not nearly as high.

  4. They aren't chasing you down the street? :D

Maybe you have a sense of humour but if you have it's lost on me.

Perhaps you might like to share with us all just what the <deleted> you're talking about :):D

Very simple... When you are, e.g., in Pattaya at least 25 people will show you what and where. Thank God we live in CM!

Pattaya, Patong, Karon, Kata, Bangkok, any tourist area. Take your pick.

  5. There is a massage place in the mall at the corner of soi 3 sukhumvit that has this massage. You may have to ask for it. I would suspect just asking for a 'massage for man' would do the trick.

I had one masseuse that started on me but my wife was in the next booth and it didn't last long.

Google up lingam massage to find out what it is about.

  6. I like being able to understand what they are saying about me.

Since some think all farang cannot speak Thai, they tend to say things that they would not if they knew you could speak the lingo.

Most people have done this. Myself included. Unless it is really harsh, I ignore it.

It really embarrasses them though when you speak to them in Thai later on.

I still will not negotiate in Thai because my skills are not that good.

  7. You can be sitting next to the driver chatting away in Thai and the next second he answers the radio and refers to you as an "it".

Don't make the mistake of literal translation or catching one single word of many... A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Try to check the context of what he is talking to the other person about, not just the pronoun...

Consider that he was talking to you just before. What was the tone of your conversation? Did he have reason to be insulting? If not, he obviously knew you understood and spoke Thai so do you really think that he would deliberately use a word about you that he meant as an insult? If you find this as unlikely as I do, chances are it is just the way he speaks to his friends or family...

In the english speaking world a cabbie refers to a passenger as a fare. That is an it.

  8. did you try Google Earth?

    easiest way.

I have a GPS that lets me look up addresses but is much more complicated than GE's method (simply type in the address and it will show you a few options)

But there are 76 provinces (or thereabouts) and then it is broken down into towns or cities.

There are also postal codes but i don't know a way to search for them but it probably can be done

    Then sois (streets).

There is also something called a moo (my address includes "moo 7") which i am not sure what it means but helps the postman deliver. I have found it still gets here whether you use it or not.

Moo is a further breakdown meaning village.

  9. I am interested in finding a boarding school for a Thai 12 year old somewhere in the northeast. We will be centered in Nong Bua Lamphu and I would like to stick to a 4 hour drive or so. Chiang Mai might not be ruled out though.

They don't have to teach in English, just have classes preferably with a native speaker.

Reasonable prices would be good as there is another one following next year.

I have some names from google but would prefer to hear some personal opinions.
