  1. They are also expected to call on Thailand to honor its agreement to allow Cambodia to register the Preah Vihear temple as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Which it will not - because as we all know, this is Lieland.

Is this the same government that Thailand is accusing of providing mercenaries, agents provocateur on (and safe harbor to) the red shirt barricades? Cambodians despite the last hundreds of years have nothing against the Thai, save for these modern land disputes. This is a typical third world reaction to the hate that has been spewn upon them by Thailand.

Harboring Taksin was one of Hun Sen's few political miscalculations during his reign. Having said that, Cambodia has not and will not suffer for it. A finger in the eye of its arrogant neighbor.

I am sure the unions deal is a qpquo thing.

Thats not entirely true, i know many Cambodians and have spent quite some time over there and i can tell you quite confidently that anti-thai sentiment in cambodia is very strong. They view thais as dishonest and always trying to get the better of them with an air of superiority over the Cambodians.

Cambodians are very influenced by economic gain, and will easily pose as a friend if they feel they will be getting ahead, very shrewd people. Smarter than many people give them credit for.

Apart from that, boy do they love to get drunk !

Sounds like the Thais and the Chinese.

  2. Wonder if there has been any "advise" offered from Thai friends of Cambodia

Gee the PADS and democrats created a border incident as a PR stunt against the REDS. Now guess what happens! I guess we are going to get a lot like the above - lets forget how this created and blame it on Thaksin. Once you start a ball rolling you never know where it will end up.

Do You think anyone actually considers this drivel as any sort of advice?

  3. And you don't consider a racist post suggesting that they should encourage foreigners to live here and father children because they would be of a better quality than Thai children insulting?

Unfortunately, a very large number of Thai men run away as soon as they learn that their gf/gig or whatever is pregnant. Very many of the mothers have no other choice than sending the children to their own mother and start working in the "entertainment industry". If the grandmother can't or won't take care of the children... those are the kids you see running around in South Pattaya at three in the morning. Call it racist if you want, but it's a fact. The problem exists in western countries as well, but not to the same degree, and in those countries, at least in Europe, there are economic arrangements that protect the mother and child. No such thing here. Go to the maternity wards upcountry or near any of the tourist resorts and ask the young mothers if the bf is still around.

What foreigners can do is to support one or two children like that. The monthly cost isn't much more than a couple of bar visits. It won't solve the problem for Thailand, but it will at least help a child or two to get a mother who is there for them and hopefully some kind of education.

What rock did you crawl out from under?

How can they be 500 miles away when they are taking your money in BKK?

  4. I am buying an HD Road King from the HD Dealer in BKK. I have already made the down payment and am waiting until August to pick it up.

Do I have to have a Thai Driving license and an "O" visa?

I am married to a Thai. I don't mind registering it in her name but I may want to cross borders without her.

I am not currently living in Thailand but I can get an "O" visa easy by going to Laos. Where I am located it would be impossible for me to have one on arrival.

    Anyone know these things?jap.gif

  5. dont buy unless it has a chinote title deed paper or nor sor sam , if the land has no papers then you allready know the answer to that. rice paddy land per rai in kalasin / isaan is around ( my wife tells me ) 100 - 150 k near main road, then again wife could be wrong.

It all depends on where the land is in Issan. Some land in Loei is about 25% cheaper than in Nong Bua Lamphu.

  6. It sounds like you you got a fair deal and everyone was happy. That goes a long way for good relations with your neighbors and the locals. I had much the same experience 7 years ago with 2.5 rai on Koh Chang. The problems then were two-fold...no avalable fill material and no trucks to deliver it :D

We had to schedule the project 6 months in advance and it was like planning a major military campain haha.

85% of the island is a national park and the government only opens up excavation sites a few times a year. The rest of the time the dirt has to be brought from the mainland which make it some of the most expensive stuff on the planet :D

We got lucky when one of the big developers had a problem with a land title and backed out of about 800 truck loads of dirt and sold us his contract at a reasonable price. We used about 550 trucks for our land and then had to fight off the dirt-hungry mobs that wanted the rest :D

The only problem we had was keeping the elevation level all the way back to the klong at the rear of the property. That last part took about 30 additional truckloads but we got those at 50% discount so the boss wouldn't lose face :)

When the weeds start growing through after the next rainy season you'll need to eradicate them with extreme prejudice or it will look like a jungle :D

I just had 1/3 rai dug out to a depth of 1 meter and back filled with 'hin' for 70,000฿. Is this reasonable? I thought it was.

Was that roughly 70-80 truckloads Large truck with 13 cubic meters?

That is what we pay for about 80 loads 13 cubic meters each load. But truckloads will vary in each location & then there is what the negotiated price is. Bang Saray area

Sorry, Got it wrong. 1 rai.

She said 257 truckloads. Don't know how big the trucks were. Nong Bua.

I guess the wife got a good deal.

  7. There is a very simple reason it is difficult. As a US citizen if your wife enters the US legally (i.e. on some sort of visa, in this case I guess a B1/B2) you can submit an I130 and immediately submit a change of status application (normally a formality) which grants her the right to remain in the US while her immigration application (I130 etc.) is processed. That is why they don't like giving a visa to a citizen's wife. Now if you work in Thailand and show YOU will return it is different, again for what I think are fairly obvious reasons. She can of course, as your wife, go through the same I130 process in Thailand and all things being equal (what does that really mean!) she will automatically get an immigration visa, though it will take some months. The problem with that is she can't then just stay for three months or they'll likely consider she has abandoned her permanent resident status. I have great sympathy for folks in your situation because your damned if you do and damned if you don't, if you see what I mean. BTW where you live in the US is irrelevant. She will have to file in Bangkok, so US location has no bearing. Indeed, as far as I can tell in my considerable research on the subject, your location is irrelevant in any situation.

Having said that it is not impossible to get a visa IF you can successfully convince them that she will not be staying in the US. There are lots of pieces of advice on this forum on how to go about doing that but I can tell you that one HUGE flag is she will stay for 3 months. That kind of negates the job and family thing so in your application I would definitely NOT state she wants to be there that long. Two or three weeks at the most. Another is that you've only been married a short time. Of course if you really intend to file for permanent status once she's there they'll pick up on that in a heartbeat. They're good at it!

Why not just get her and her son over for the few years you intend staying? After 3 years she could then become a citizen giving you both lots of options. Just file in Thailand and she should be in the US before Christmas.

Yep, the old guilty until proven innocent is alive and well in the USA.

  8. I've had good luck with a Mazuma 10KW gas water heater. Lots of hot water and no extra extra electric load but you do have to vent those. They're available at Global and Homepro in Udon.

Gas. A good idea. I had thought of that before but didn't remember seeing them anywhere.

    Thanks. :)

  10. for good insulation the walls should be two courses off brick, with a 50mm cavity. drywall gyproc plasterboard will help plus you can hide wires, pipe.

No fiberglass? Seems it would just be another echo chamber.

    are your rooms empty?

They won't be after I build the house.
