  1. A lot more Thais get pulled over than farangs!

You pay double the fine for "on the spot fine" instead of wasting your valuble farang time at the police station.

And yes your 5year DL acts as ID card.

If you have a 5 year DL it's better than carrying your passport with all the time.

Showing my stateside DL and no passport has been no problem anywhere in Thailand. And Trust me I get stopped a lot. Sometimes for speeding but mostly because they are looking for coffee money.

  2. I completely disagree. Automatic gearboxes are a convenience aimed primarily at saving effort and they do this by way of a compromise to flexibility and precision. With an auto you spend a significant amount of time in the wrong gear for the conditions (often when it's least desirable, such as entering a corner or trying to power-away) whereas, if riding or driving properly, you will be in the right gear most of the time.

It's possible that the actual shifting action may be very quick on some auto boxes, but it still only happens after the gearbox has "thought about it" for a while. Especially on lower powered vehicles, this manifests itself as "bogging down" when you hit the gas hard and don't go anywhere for a while.

If you ride a lot, especially through (note: not "in") traffic your gear changing should be fast and instinctive and much safer than relying on an auto box.

    Seconded.

  3. I bought a Isuzu 3.0 turbo diesel 4 dr. In 1 year I put 50,000 k on it sit has been through 5 oil changes all done very well at the dealer in Krabi.

It scooots right along and gets around 800 k on a tank.

Couldn't complain if I wanted to.

  4. Hi,

THe problem isnt with internet connection or anything connected with your credit cards, the problem is that you are trying to purchase goods from the internet with a Thai IP address but with a UK based credit card. Most companies these days block transactions where the transaction is from another country than that of the card issuer. This is supposed to be a method of cutting down on fraudulent orders but can be easily got around. Next time you want to order, simply use a UK proxy and as long as your credit cards are valid and have enough balance then the order will go through without problem.

Also, make sure that your billing address is exactly the same as your bank statements as again, most companies on line now use AVS - Address Verification System and if the address isnt exactly the same as that on the statement it also wont go through.

    Hope it helps,

    Falcon

    Hello!

I am trying to order items from the internet - both from reputable sites - Waterstones UK bookshop for ebooks and also Skype for wireless headphones to use with Skype.

I am from the UK. My bank know exactly where I am. There are no problems with my credit cards. Everytime I try to make a purchase, the payment is refused.

Make sure that the address you give is the same one that it is registered with in the UK. I made this mistake and had the same problem.

I make internet purchases for sending flowers to Thailand from Afghanistan with a card from the USA. The CC Co's fraud department asks about it, but at least there is a record of a purchase being made.

  5. If you have that much hostility towards the Thai police to prompt you to do something this silly, maybe you should go back to your western country. I've never been stopped by the Thai police for anything I did not do, and I find them much better than the petty jerks in America. As for "corruption" what happens here with on-the-spot fines is much better than the petty citation, trip to court, points on your driving record and increased insurance rates that happen at home. Some day you'll piss off the wrong cop with that thing enough, they can ruin your day much more than you can ruin theirs.

    Have ever been to Issan?

  6. Norway's welfare state exists because of its oil revenues. Canada's welfare state exists because of its natural resource revenues.

Portugal, Greece, and Spain's welfare states are near collapse because they do not have the revenues to support the programs.

How will Thailand pay for its welfare state. Let's see the revenue generating plan first.

The point is you just have to start somewhere - it's a noble aim, and of corse it will have to be paid for. You sicken me too!

You probably think Obama's healthcare plan is great too. 'Never mind that is flawed, we'll fix it later.'

Trouble is, government doesn't work that way. In fact they hardly work at all.

  7. I never heard what neverdie said, but he's usually correct when it comes to bikes. From what I've heard I wouldn't think in Issan you would have much trouble riding a new bike with no plates as long you have some paperwork showing it's new and you are waiting for the plates. In Bangkok they don't even issue redplates at all.

Another more remote possibility is sometimes they ask for s deposit for the red plates. Maybe that is what she's talking about?

What are you talking about, every day of the week I see dozen of bikes running around with red plates.

What happened when you bought your new bikes, or were they full cash payments?

I bought 2 bikes in Krabi, paying cash for both and got red plates for both. Took about 6 months for the first one, Still riding for 2 months on the red plates.

  8. The captain informed passengers before landing that the windshield cracked and one of the four engines stopped.

To be perfectly honest I'd rather hear that after we'd landed.

Seconded; apart from that how on earth is it possible that those 2 (completely different) problems occurred at the same moment ? What has an engine that stopped has to do with a cracked window ?

  9. I stayed there in 1978. Patong Beach Hotel had been built by then but the beach pretty much looked the same.

    Much better in those days.

Hey I know, lets build another Tesco/Lotus.

Thailand has forgotten what tourism is about.

    Thanks for the pics. :)

  10. This is really funny for us Farang to be critical of the system, when we are all moving over here because of low cost. And low wages is way the cost for us so low.

My spouse works at a very worldwide known hotel. The charge prices that would rival any hotel in Europe or the USA but she makes $420 a month. Very good pay for Thailand but the rich just keep getting richer on the labor of the poor that just stay poor.

  11. Very nice, similar to what I want to have built in my wife's folks village.

One question, even though I've had extensions on my current house I can never get them to 'chase' a wall to hide wiring. They just do not understand the concept of hidden wiring. 'How will you fixit if there is a problem' attitude...

    What did you do?

I figure it is going to be too much trouble to get them to hide the plumbing and the wiring, so I plan to let them put it in the way the will and then cover it with a false wall.
