  1. Problem with Khao Lak, fine for a hotel/resort holiday, but there really isn't any private accommodation available. The area is just one long strip, and whilst the beach is OK, living there (in my opinion) would be a nightmare. The shops and restaurants are very much tourist orientated, again, not great for a resident expat unless running a business there. There are better places and options further south, say between Khok Kloi and Thai Muang. Not many expats but some, and there are more than a few good restaurants, with the advantage of being within striking distance of Sarasin Bridge and the facilities of Phuket.
  2. Pulse TV have all of the matches, from various channels, including BBC and ITV.
  3. Perhaps consider Phang Nga, some decent beaches there and still relatively easy access to the facilities of Phuket. Parts of Krabi province also. Songkhla has some decent beaches, and Hat Yai has all of the major facilities in terms of shopping/restaurants etc.
  4. I had spray foam installed to the underside of my roof in November 2015. One of the driving factors was a complete new paint of the house exterior, which included painting the roof tiles a dark charcoal colour (which obviously was going to absorb more heat). Anyway, first thing was to have the roof tiles checked for any missing or gaps which could cause leakage of the foam when sprayed. Job took the team 2 days to complete, with the foam applied to a thickness of 50mm. The house interior temperature was lowered quite markedly, I estimate between 3 to 5 deg C. As mentioned in other posts, there's the added advantage of the tiles being effectively locked in position, which eliminates potential leaks. Can't remember the last time I was in the roof space, but co-incidentally was there today as there's an issue with a domestic water header tank in the roof space, where the ball cock cut off seems to be stuck with the result that there's a constant overflow. Fortunately the over flow pipe discharges outside the house onto a lower passage roof. Some photos of the insulation, taken at the time of installation but still looks the same 7 years on.
  5. Seconded, go to the official Samsung service centre in Phuket Town. Had a few things repaired there, quick and efficient. There will also be a warranty on the repair they make.
  6. The Expat for sure, the Soi opposite Bangla.
  7. I think you'll find that there are more Russians in Pattaya than Phuket. Do you actually live in Thailand? Regardless, ultimately they are just people wanting a holiday, and given the restrictions of lack of flights, currency and credit card controls, those who make it must be seriously motivated. Oh, and your other reasons are?
  8. Patong: The Halfway Inn Heroes Expat Hotel Aussie Bar Chalong: The Green Man Happy Days Food For Foreigners Chalong Fishing Park Rawai: The Islander Freedom Bar Karon: Angus O'Tool's The Living Room Walkabout Bar Kata: The Tavern Kamala: Aussie Pub Bang Tao: O'Hara's Cape Panwa: Sunrise Bar
  9. Agree with Expo, local kit at local prices. Some decent food places in that area also.
  10. Best (my opinion) would be north through Kamala to Cherng Talay, then to Heroines, then right towards Phuket Town, right at the Bypass, left at Sam Kong.
  11. From your description, are you confusing the road from Karon (hence Rawai/Chalong) to Patong, rather than the road from Kathu to Patong (over Patong Hill) which is the one that has collapsed? On the Karon side, there are a couple of small track type roads that lead to beaches.
  12. Could also be a type of stag beetle.
  13. As I understand it: You (Kwasaki) own a bar/restaurant. In your village, someone else opened another bar/restaurant. You (Kwasaki) decided to visit the new establishment, and having ordered beer (no mention of food) thought that it was 'expensive' and thought it best that you share this information on-line. Can't quite understand this, as pretty much all 'village' beers are priced within a few baht of each other. Having thought the beer (again no mention of food) was expensive, you (Kwasaki) decide to go on-line and complain. Hey, the new bar/restaurant owner comes around to query your complaint and you (Kwasaki) thinks it's a good idea to abuse him. You (Kwasaki) need to grow up. Pathetic.
  14. This one is highly recommended by Royal British Legion members who get blazers and other clothing made there. http://ama-fashion.com/
  15. Paid a visit to Sriwara Bisro and Cafe on Sunday, this after what was not a good visit nearly a year ago, not long after it opened. That particular occasion the organisation was poor, and waited nearly an hour for my starter before we decided to call it quits and left. This time, much much better. It's located on Chaofa West near the junction with Kwang Road, and sandwiched between We Cafe and the next Wine store. My wife had some large prawns with noodles, then a deep fried fish that had been carved, with a side dish of Thai salad stuff. I opted for a starter Hokkaido scallops with pork, quail eggs, and Thai salad, then a main course of rack of lamb with a pesto crust, which was served with a selection of vegetables. The good lady had a dessert whilst I opted for a double espresso and a brandy. Very large range of food, so you can have a reasonably priced snack or go for something more substantial. Good drinks selection, including several draught beers, extensive wine list with a few by the glass. Mont Clair will not be found here. Not expensive but not cheap either, a classic of you get what you pay for.
  16. If cost was a factor in flying into Bangkok first rather than direct into Phuket, I doubt that the ambience of either The Oriental or Peninsula will have much appeal.
  17. I keep scanned copies of all documents, including the required photos, on file, so just print them out again each year, the same as the last 5 years. Only exception of course being the KorRor 2 which is new each year and the bank documentation. Easy. This in Phuket.
  18. Agree with Adelphi Suites on Soi 8, great location with the bonus of an excellent buffet breakfast.
  19. I regularly use Amazon, both the US and UK sites, both of which my Thai debit card is registered and have never had a problem. Likewise my anti virus and indeed VPN accounts, both of which I've renewed recently.
  20. I think the key word here is 'credit'. I use debit cards with both my Thai (Mastercard) and UK banks (Visa) with no difficulty, and of course, using bank apps and QR codes are becoming more and more common. Really, credit cards are only of any use if want to defer or spread payment, or using it as a loan facility
  21. What I find odd in this case is that the guy had previously ordered the woman to leave his house which she did and was living elsewhere. It seems the norm that males threaten females if they leave them, not if they stay. Maybe there was another reason she went after him having been ditched.
