I can give you a list of Thai bike shops that obviously don't know what they're doing when importing HD's from the US. Most are 20 yrs. in the business. Could be a real business op for you.
I am not suggesting for one second that any shop that imports and sells bikes go any route but by the book and if I had a bike importing business I am sure I would go the same route as most of them. However, if you can provide a healthy size list of bike shops that both import bikes (from the US not salvage bikes from Japan) and have been in business over 20 years I would love to see it, please do post.
The original poster was looking at brining a personal bike over to ride while in Thailand and that is what I was addressing. Yes he could spend $25000 on a bike that is worth $10000 in the US and that is easy enough. All I was suggesting is that there are perfectly legal ways to bring a personal bike over here if you are willing to do a little bit of research and spend a bit of time & effort.
If you've been in Thailand for over a mo. and hangin around the harley boys you'd know.
Sorry, I been here for 4 years now and run a motorcycle business where the most common bikes I deal with are based on Harley and after-market 80 to 124inch Evo's but I am out of the loop and don't hang around the "harley boys" so better if you can just post that list you offered to provide.
Ditto, I wouldn't mind seeing that list as well. [subscribed to thread]

"Greed...is on the rise"
I remember one time in Chiang Mai, I was sitting at a bar and this western guy (who I don't know from my next beer) sidles over all chummy like. Talks the normal bar BS to me for half an hour or so then he hits me up with an investment scheme. I started laughing my head off and politley told him to try it on someone else, I'm not interested. Then the prick takes offense because I wouldn't hear him out. I ended up finishing my beer and walking out. What part of 'no I'm not interested' didn't this guy understand.

You could try Kuhn Boyd at Chicane Motorcycles Bangkok. I understand that he is running aftermaket gear on his race Ducati.
Just an idea.
I cannot find any information about 'Kuhn Boyd at Chicane Motorcycles Bangkok' .... any indication?
I made a mistake, its Kuhn Boy..no y in his name.
I asked some buddies to give me some info, below are directions and a phone number:
Lad Phrao 64/4 turn left into the Soi going towards Central Lad Phrao then

I know you want phonetics, but even copying this my help. Not perfect Thai but it should get the point across.
ล้อ รถจักรยานยนต์ ของ ฉัน รู้สึก ไม่ ตรง. บาร์ สั่น เมื่อ ฉัน ขี่
My motorcycle wheels are not straight. Bar vibration when I ride.

I stood on a cheap jewelry item once and crunched it. All by accident and with no dramas paid the 99baht for it. My fault for walking to close to the dispaly mat, but no issues with anyone getting pissed off and a fight erupting. Probably a standard trick to have the mats out like that, but I was still the dozy person who stood on it

Hey Ninja fans!

I know you have her running okay now, but since she is getting on a bit in years => 2001, I would suggest you start changing out your fuel system hoses for new items or quality aftermarket ones. Deterioration is expected oveer time.

I reckon the fur is going to fly at the end of this month

No mate, I was guessing you were coming from Sydney, as I don't remember you saying where you were leaving from. Melbourne-Cairns return. You going up the guts or following the coast? The coast your looking at 7,000 kms round trip. Up the guts a wee bit over 6,500 return. http://maps.google.com/

Red Baron on Ramkhamhaeng Rd Bangkok has a big warehouse and outdoor area full of used motorcycle parts, vast assortment of parts in a junkyard setting , used and new bikes also.
Nice layout on the spares warehouse

I'll be curious to know the answer as well

Almost every local motosai shop is a kind of junkyard.
Nothing is thrown away, either rebuilt or reused.
Yeah, definitelt agree there. One of our little motosoi (I like the title) shops. Seemed okay from the front when I first looked, then I actually looked past gloom and I had honestly never seen so much bike crap in my life. On hindsight, its probably a treasure trove of hard to get items (amongst the rubbish) and all stored away by location in the owners head

What trip you doing BSJ. Sydney-Cairns-Sydney? That's good for about 6,000kms

Thank you guys for the responses. This is the sort of info that is invaluable to me.
Are there any specific routes or things I should not miss as I start moving south towards Mae Sot?
p.s nice bike collection in the US there! shame you cant rent them here in chiang maiKawi Er6 is a pretty darn good bike. The only thing that sucks on it is suspension, can only adjust preload on the shock. I wish I could play around to set it up better for these bumpy turns, but otherwise it is a great bike. I presume it is a big success in Thailand. Good value for money and capable enough.
Is there such a thing as motorcycle trackdays in Thailand? Where you can go on a racetrack and go as fast as you want on the circuit?

Supervised life seems the destiny for this sad creature,
clearly he can't be left to his own devices.
The only bright spot is his young target is safe and unharmed.
Very very true mate

This is ludicrious. It's illegal to have them, but it's 'quasi' legal to sell them!
This is one of the specific reasons I told my son when he comes from Australia to NOT bring any medicines unless I k now of them first, so that I can advise him accordingly.
The Aussy embassy in Bangkok were very helpful in regards to prescription medication as I'm sure the other embassies are.
Mind you I nearly fell over backwards when I asked the embassy about a certain medication for ADHD my son had been taking. The embassy comes back and says that it is a legal amphetamine derivative <deleted>!? (dexamphetamine) BUT with strictly controlled quantities coming into Thailand

When upside down forks came out, as hailed in their day, I didn't think much of it until I bought my 04R1. Before that I had the then normal style forks and often problem of leaky fork seals from repeated stone chips on unprotected hard chrome. I eventually solved my fork seal failure problem by buying new fork pistons and putting on fork gators before fitting them back into the triple clamps. Then I always had to fiddle with the gators once in awhile to see if I had leaks from the seals, which stopped happening's but it was cumbesome. Along comes my brand new 2004 R1. New style forks, aerodynamically protected hard chrome via the front guard. No gators needed to protect fork seal hard chrome, no fork seal changes required while I owned it, easy to keep clean and minimal chance of the scraper seals having dirt sitting on the feather edge.
I never tracked my bike, but from a reduced maintenance scenario, I will swear by them for that very convenience.
