  1. Anybody know where I can get the required "car passport" in Chiang Mai so I can drive straight into Vientiane?

Try the Land Transportation Department (LTD) on the Hang Dong Road on your left just before Big C. Same place for driver license and vehicle license.

You will need a residence letter your passport the blue book photocopies of all and I think but am not sure a photo. It is usually ready a day or so later.

  2. One problem with a checkup is that you have documented history of a pre existing condition with any abnormal readings and Insurance can use it to invalidate a future claim.

  3. OK OK I will flame this topic. I havn't seen many flake p[osts, more of just chatting with joel. It was a great subject but now getting borring. Can we keep the chats to private and the flake stiories for this post?

  7. Technically it is valid until midnight, but at 12.01 am the next day you are an overstay!

You have to renew or leave on or before the 23/09/10.

Also - if you leave and re-enter (with a re-entry permit) before 23/9 - you will get another 90 days from when you re-enter. ;) (At least that is how I understand it.)

That is only if you have a non-O-A which was obtained in your own country. It does not apply to extensions done here.

  8. I had a couple of broken fingers set and pinned ( about 45 minutes op) and it cost me 15000 including 4 nights stay.

Best wishes for the OP and wife.

Excuse me, please, but a 4 night stay for broken fingers really provokes my curiosity. In other words, <deleted>?

Maybe it was just more convenient than returning frequently?

OT but I have severe COPD which needed to be stabalised before the operation and monitored after otherwise it would have been two nights...Night of admission operate next day and release on the third. ie 2 nights. The care is excellent and the bed costs 65 baht a day. I visited someone at sripat yesterday and the bed cost is 2600 a day just to start. Their prices have doubled in a year or so.

  9. She won't wait if it is urgent. I can strongly recomend SuanDOrk...(Maharaj) The care is good and I have had an op there and they are very very clean. If your wife can get a free scheme card and nominate it as her hospital it is free. If not you are probably looking at less than 20k...

It would be worth taking her papers and seing them.... They seem to clear everyone that goes in the morning by lunch time.

  10. Chiang Mai wins, hands down for hospital and civilized amenities i.e. shopping malls fine dining etc. If you get sick in Laos you are screwed! LP is charming and a nice place to visit, but to live is another story! Think carefully about your move!

Wow! What a horrible size font.

Actually it is quite nice. T V is for every one and not all of us have microscopes for eyes.

Agreed and TV has opted not to apply Web Accessibility standards in not enabling font size changes. One very big weakness of TV which is on the whole very accomodating of individual diferences.

  11. You are a UK citizen with a UK Passport on a round the world trip. You are not, and doubtless ever will be a Thai resident.

Yes, one is not officially regarded as a Thai resident, but nevertheless one resides in Thailand according to one's visa conditions, the best (top) visa option for those that are here permanently is an annual retirement visa (financial conditions apply) but must be reconfirmed every 90 days by visiting the immigration office with the required paperwork copies in order to "revive" the annual visa for a further 90 days.

Although not officially a Thai resident, one is no longer a UK resident either, UK pension restriction (but not taxation) apply, thus you will become for one year a migratory floater, but notwithstanding the above, you will still remain a UK domiciliary.

1 "Retirement" visas do not permit working.

2 90 day reporting is seperate from visa requirements

3 Retirement visas (Non-O visa with extensions based on retirement) are only available for people over 50

  12. The flower market near the old bus station does magnificent arrangements for the around price skyblustu quotes.

I'm a regular customer there which explains why my popularity is always so high on the domestic front. :whistling:

Or could it be that you have so much to apologise for that you have to have a standing flower order. Nice flowers can be had for a few hundred baht so do not fall for Interflora prices.

  13. Sorry I can't help, I only have more questions. I noticed this 150 baht charge last year, per transaction on my credit card withdrawals, even though my credit card is loaded with all my cash. this only encouraged me to withdraw lager sums of cash and I didn't feel safe carrying around so much.

So does anyone know how do avoid this charge, I dint have a Thai bank account, but i will be out that way next month and be travelling between Lao and LOS for about 3 months, Aeon bank atms you say don't charge, I will not be going to pattaya, are they very common?

How is your credit card "loaded with cash" ?

What I meant was I have a small credit limit, but when I am on holidays It is far simpler to have all my holiday cash on my credit card, so to avoid carring much cash

    Interesting.

How does that work ? Do you pay your holiday money into your card account before travelling ?

I do the same. With most Australian credit cards if you have a credit balance on your card....ie have put your own money in you get the benifits of a Credit Card such as points and the ability to reverse transactions and only get charged the same 1% that you would with a debit card instead of 3% or so with normal credit (plus interest) The drawback is that usually the balance on your card does not earn interest.

  14. What everyone needs to remember is that these private hospitals are a business first and that they only make you better after they have made money. They would not be here if they did not make money.

Bangkok Samui Hospital is the best equipped hospital on the island, and the most expensive. It is famous for 'scaring' patients into having unnecessary tests. The price for a paracetamol is outrageous there.

However, one good thing that it did do was to set up a database of ex-pat blood donors on the island. When they need blood for an emergency, they give the appropriate blood type donor a call. There are quite a few people going around now with my O RH neg Singha in them.

Edited 'cos I couldn't spell the first time.

And how much did the patient pay for the alchahol transfusion per litre.

  15. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of decent monks, but as mentioned the entry procedure is so lax a lot of people unworthy to wear the robes slip through.

The Buddha kind of set the tone when he accepted the serial killer, Angulimala, into the monastic order. Although there are some basic restrictions for ordination set down in the Monastic Code, the idea is that everyone has the potential for enlightenment and should be given a chance. Perhaps it would work better if the abbots were stricter about the 227 precepts, so that layabouts didn't find the monkhood an appealing way of life.

My take on the OP is this: Under the Monastic Code, monks are not allowed to have contact with females, which makes it very difficult for them to move around or do anything in a crowded plane. Most likely the stewardesses would move them to business class out of consideration and to make it easier for everyone (i.e. both the monks and the women on the plane). I believe there is also a precept that monks cannot eat at the same table as laity. I don't know how this would work in a plane, but clearly it would be better for a monk to have a row of seats to himself, if possible.

As others have mentioned, serving a monk in any way brings merit. There is no reason for a monk to decline a kindness unless it will result in him breaking a precept.

So serial killers are OK but amputees not.

  16. I've lusted over a Jag V12 engine for a long time. On a sandy bottom they make great boat anchors! :D

I hear a chevvy does just fine too if you can beat the rust,. :whistling:

At a fraction of the cost.

Check out how rusting occurs underwater - i.e. in a low oxygen environment.as a mostly cast iron engine it would make a far more reliable anchor........under the sea as on land it proves more reliable than the Jag!

But does it have the walnut panelling

  17. It is up to the OP to post as he sees fit. As it is he has posted something which is nice to browse through once or twice....a coffee table book....but of little lasting value. If the poster wishes to add more information...ie what it is and source it changes from that to a world class historical resource.

I think he may have that at home now. Maybe he doesn't want others to have it.
