  1. All the scooters in the household over the years have with one exception been bought new.

Taking a brand new scooter out of the show room is just a nice feeling and now it's up to you how you threat it.

Yes some Thais ride them until they brake but not all, thankfully they are very cheap to fix if you get a lemon.

On all our scooters we maintained the service handbook so the potentially new buyer can see the service history but keep in mind they are not computerized like cars are, so the service book can be written by the owner and nobody can tell.

  2. I hope they will offer one with the 650cc engine one day.

Copy and paste from the article provided earlier:

Ever since Royal Enfield debuted its 650 Twin engine platform, enthusiasts have been anticipating a new Himalayan variant based on it. As of now, RE seems to be focused on a cruiser spin-off but we do hope the engine will also serve an adventure tourer eventually.

  3. Your choice is very limited with a 80k budget.

MT07 is highly praised in tests and I think it was bike of the year in the middle class category, doubt you can get one below 100k.

Er6 gives you a lot of bike for that money, you can always change the handle bar later on.

Rough engine, well that's because you come from a 300cc scooter, you will get used to it, it's not too bad.

The Er6 was a much loved bike back in its day, a lot of bang for the buck, a no frills bike, engine very robust if taken care of.

If I was on your budget, I would get the Er6 hands down.

I am not basing it just on the comments here but the negative Ford comments did prompt me to do further research. You are right, not all dealerships are the same, some have competent staff and some are better than others. I live in Pattaya, so I read the google map reviews of the Pattaya Ford dealer and the Toyota dealer in Jomtien. The reviews are like day and night, good for Toyota,  but less than complimentary for Ford Pattaya. I wanted to avoid driving to another city to get hassle free service, especially under warranty.

Today I had a test drive of a 2020 Toyota Hilux Revo prerunner 2.4 double cab High. They only make 4 trim levels, entry, mid, high and rocco. Nice vehicle but no lumbar support in any model, and cruise control only in the High model. For long drives, the lumbar support is great and so is cruise control. The High model list price  is 1,009,000 less a discount of 50,000. Then 7,000 baht for registration, 646 for some special tax. Final price 969,646 baht. Also they offered a list of free accessories. The 2021 models have the same list price as the 2020 models, and there is a 45 day wait.

    Okay fair enough.

I hope you also test ride a XLT before making up your mind.

It will be unlikely you need any warranty service.

Cruise control is indeed nice to have, used it a lot on my WT during a resent round trip to North Thailand.

If you live in Pattaya why on earth do you want a pick-up truck if you don't mind me asking? It was a big mistake in hind-sight getting a truck when living in Pattaya, I find it way too big.

Funnily enough, I was at Mazda looking at the beautiful CX30 and fell into talk with another expat looking at the same car, and I told him that I need a smaller vehicle and pointed out at my WT. He laughed and pointed out at his new Fortuner 2.8 and said I gonna sell it as soon as possible and get the top-model CX30 instead.

Thanks.  I found a dealer offering 60k discounts on XLTs.

I was considering the Ford Ranger, but based on the comments in this thread, it seems it's difficult to get problems diagnosed properly and fixed free within the warranty period. I just want a reliable worry-free experience and a truck that will last a long time (10+ years), comfortable for 4 adults. Something that just needs minimal maintenance that can be performed by most competent licensed mechanics, not just manufacturer's dealership mechanics. A brand of truck where one doesn't have to argue with the service manager to get things fixed or escalate issues to the head office, etc.

You should not buy only based on what you read here, that would be a mistake, so many Ford haters here I found out since the new Ranger was launched, I think the new ranger forum back in around 2012 or 13 was one of the longest ever here.

My Ranger from 2013 have been very good, okay the AC packed up earlier this year but this can happen to any brand after 6 year and on-wards. Also had AC  problems when I had a Honda City before the Ranger.

If I buy another pick-up truck (but I don't, too big for our needs), I will for sure get another Ford, likely the 2.0 Bi-turbo, the Ranger is the best riding and best looking truck for sale in Thailand IMO.

No complaints about the service either, Ford have improved their service a lot over the last 3-4 years.

Do you really think all Toyota dealers are that good, no they are not, some are good, some are not!

Wow you get nearly 70 miles on a full battery,  must be good solar you have.

I wonder if it will still do that in a few months. Our PHEV range has dropped more than 15% in 18 months.

Which car do you have? A bit concerning it's dropping so fast, a quick Goggle search says you can expect it to drop app 2.3% a year which is acceptable for me. Maybe it's the climate, batteries don't like it super hot.

    I am sure he meant 70km, 555

Absoultely sure that some of you (not experienced bikers) will slate me for saying this but you cannot be serious?  Long distance touring on a 150cc?  You've got to be crazy, you'll kill the bike and the trip will be a pain.

I wouldn't go any futher than 50km on anything less than 500cc - certainly not for touring.

Yes, I know people do it - I have a friend that rode from Buriram to Phuket on a Honda Wave with a sidecar fitted but that was a matter of necessity.  Ask him if he'd do it again - no way.

Remember, as you are planning long distance tours, you need to factor in the weight of your luggage.

    Nonsense.

There was a guy on the forum a few year back that rode his Wave from Pattaya to North Thailand and back, no problems.

There was another one that went all the way down to Singapore on his PCX. Okay because on going full throttle on much of the trip he had to get new piston rings fitted when he came back to Thailand, app 1500 baht for that.

Papa Al here goes all over Thailand on his CBR150.

When out and about in Thailand I see a lot of young Thais on small cc bikes riding in big groups on a touring trip.

I myself prefer extra power I must admit but I am sometimes wondering if not a 300cc scooter can do the job just fine, they can likely maintain 120km/h without damage the engine.

I find it quite funny some spend 1 mill on a big BMW adventure bike for just touring Thailand on it and then they don't really want to go anywhere near gravel roads because they are nervous their expensive bike gets damaged, LOL

Forgot to add, been riding big bikes since I was 18 years old many many Moons ago.

Most things you but brand new are good, it's the staying good that matters. I have had a pile of cheap Chinese goods over the years, you know, copies of quality stuff, hand drills are my no.1....

Still no thoughts on why MG give a 7 year warranty in the UK but only 4 years in LOS...?

I was wondering about that too, will ask MG showroom in Pattaya why only 4 years here and 7 in the UK when I get over there, likely next year

In reality the vast majority of people barely drive more than 50km a day. I always wondered what happens if you don't use the ICE for extended periods, will it create issues for the engine? What about maintenance etc?

Many people have prejudice against Chinese cars, however the reviews from the latest MG's are actually really good. So it is worth putting these prejudices aside to take another look. The latest EP wagon (MG5 EV) is no different.
It has a few quirks. I am personally not a fan of the styling, but for the price (especially considering how cars are normally priced Thailand) it has a lot going for it. There is literally no competition within the price range. And this has a lot to do with tax and the FTA with China.

If I had a plug-in hybrid, I will always run the engine minimum once a week. I will assume in power mode that the engine is running all the time? Also have to enjoy that acceleration sometimes, 555.

I have prejudice against Chinese cars/bikes I must admit but you are right, just get over it.

I am looking at getting a new ride next year and I will defiantly see if I can test drive the HS PHEV.

I had hoped Mazda would had presented a hybrid at the motor-show but it was not to be?

Well this took a different turn....  My plan has been to do some longer distance touring with the Mrs.  After looking at the Tracer's stated max weight I realized that while it would be a perfect bike for solo touring that it wouldn't work for two of us.  I finally settled on a Versys 1000 SE.  Quite a bit heavier than the Yammie but the extra weight disappears once underway.  The suspension is great and the engine is turbine-smooth.  One bonus is that it's Kawasaki green which because of my old ZRX1200 I'm partial to.

    Thanks again for the replies

Congt on the Versys 1000, heard it's a very good underestimated touring bike.

I don't like the super low seat though, a Thailand thing for short Thais!!

  11. The MG HS PHEV looks quite interesting.

Over 250hp combined, 0-100 7.5sec, range as EV app 32 miles or 50km, 8 year warranty on the batteries.

    1.36 mill.

I just can't use a full EV car, I need much more range, if the range is 1000km, yes, but we are not there yet so plug-in hybrid is currently the best for my needs. Above car could be used for school runs everyday for my son and then the occasionally holiday to North Thailand.

  12. I bought via Amazon, then I get a laptop without Thai letters.

A bit tax is added when buying but I got some of it back after a while.

When I look for a laptop, I check as many reviews as possible and try to narrow down what I want. Then when I know what I want I start searching on-line stores for it.

I bought a laptop for my daughter at Banana IT in Central and it was okay price wise and on the specs.

  13. On my WT 2.2 from 2013 the AC completely failed earlier this year while I was stuck overseas working.

The failure was so severe that (according to my wife) smoke and steam was pouring out from under the bonnet and the truck had to be trucked to Ford (2 km away). That was 29k for a whole new AC unit which is not so bad actually.

Then when they were fixing that, they phoned my wife and told her an engine gasket near the gearbox was not holding 100% tight anymore and they recommend it getting changed as well. That was over 8k because the gearbox have to be partly removed I believe.

Since then no problems and I would be very disappointed it there was, we just did a +2500km round trip up to North Thailand and back to Pattaya and no problems whatsoever.
