  2. My two young lichee trees haven’t given fruit yet but are already getting big enough to need pruning (about 5 years old). Looked up pruning methods for lichee and it seems you want to prune headers timed so that the cold they require to set flowers will happen when flowers are just starting to form. So my question is, what month do local people prune lichee (in Chiang Mai area)? I realize that the process of picking the fruit usually involves snipping off the ends of the branches, so that may be all the pruning people do, and that would have me a month behind schedule already. Thanks for any insight.

I already take ginger and gingko biloba herbal capsules for my immune system.  If you want me to try this new miracle medicine, at least mention what's inside the capsule?

Most Thai people would effortlessly identify the three roots shown in the picture. Not to say listing them in the article seems like a good idea. Kachai (Chinese Keys), tumeric, and white tumeric. All plants on the radar of researchers long since.

  4. Had a hard rain with strong winds at our place North of Chiang Mai this afternoon. Estimated 2 cm. A friend in CM said the power was off at her office for a few hours. More expected.

  5. I did first marriage extension at CM office last week (not first ever, just first here). Had read a lot of horror stories about the CM office but also that it was no longer jammed as before. So reviewed requirements and went in before just to check that there were no office specific requirements we weren’t used to. Tried to go early on the day (no appointment) but long drive there and closest bank (at Airport mall) not opening until late morning delayed us. Submitted everything in the late morning and was told to return in the afternoon. So went to lunch. Came back, and they were processing each applicant before us in about 20 to 30 minutes for each one. Finally our turn after a 90 minute wait, and finished with under consideration stamp in 10 minutes. Staff were friendly and helpful, apologized for processing time (said computer was down).

Notes: Yes, bank update needs to be same day as application

Precheck outside quite good, people there are foreigners on a volunteer visa who all work for the same ‘foundation’.thought that was interesting but didn’t ask them about it.

Since this was our first application at present address we are now waiting for a home visit (supposed to be within two weeks) and need to be here until that is done. Then back to the office after a month to complete.

One gentleman came in for first time after changing his retirement visa from income to bank method and was told he needed to have his paperwork from previous application, which he didn’t have.

All in all, not so hard, if you have a translator or speak Thai, should be no need for an agent.

  6. My recent experience. Went to Mae Tang in February and was told earliest appointment for a 5 year renewal was April 7! After reading this thread went to KW driving school in Mae Jo, watched the video (200 baht) and took the physical tests. They made an appointment for me in the system at Mae Hia. Possible to do school and transport office on same day sometimes if appointments are available. KW was quite a big and professional operation.  I went to transport office the next day, gave them my Cert of residency obtained with the help of an agent, medical cert (30 baht!) and rest of documents. Did color test again (other tests waived due to KW already doing). Was out with a new license in a couple of hours.

Renewed my 5 year car Drivers License last Tuesday.

Got Residence Certificate from Immigration through my visa agent. 24 hour turnaround.

Got my Medical Certificate at CM Bangkok Hospital. 40 minute turnaround.

Watched the 50 minute instructional video & got certificate at KW Driving School, Maejo. 80 minute turnaround.

Took all documents to DLT Hang Dong. Was given traffic light colour blindness test, all documents processed, fee paid, photograph taken & new DL issued. Total time 45 minutes.

Note that from next year older drivers will have to go through annual medical test & renewal process, but as I have now received a 5 year license this only commences when this license ends.

What was the fee for the ‘expedited’ residency certificate? Did you need an appointment at DLT Hang Dong? Thanks

  8. Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center is a good tourist stop. Lovely old building in the center of the old town. Some temporary exhibits in the back of the building which are free, some permanent exhibits for which there is an entrance fee (haven’t seen them so can’t comment), and a very nice cafe for coffee and snacks.  Another exhibit hall/museum across the street, which I also haven’t seen inside. We enjoy going to Warorot Market and the area around it. There are some good Indian restaurants In CM which you may not have in your area. I don’t love any of the Mexican restaurants in town but there are plenty of acceptable ones, and salad restaurants are a thing and some pretty good ones (Ohkajhu) just to give you some ideas. Hummus Cafe is a new favorite for ME food.

Someone is setting up some kind of project involving an old Thai aircraft (can tell it’s Thai Airways by what’s left for now of the paint job) at the intersection of 107 and 1095 (road to Pai) in Chiang Mai province. It was in pieces but last time I went by they had put the wings back on. Figure it’s got to be a restaurant but a pretty big site so ``likely more than that.

  10. Not much into the crab place, but it is popular and the servings are huge. Nest 2 is good and a good value for a culinary labor of love and I forgot to mention Mikrocosmos for craft beer and a limited but quite good food menu. Plenty of cheap noodle shops and one table informal ‘bars’ also, as everywhere else in Thailand.
