Could he apply for a tourist visa which, I believe, are (or should be) free at the moment?

A student visa if for an applicant who wishes to go to The UK to study, so if she is going for a holiday the visit visa is the one.

I am retired so don't have a work permit, I was invited to apply for a Thai Airways branded Amex Credit Card. Didn't really need or even want one but sent the form back out of devilment, my credit card was courierd to me a couple of weeks later, and I am now using it to rack up my Thai miles.

ps. Is anyone able to confirm if you are able to call the embassy and ask what the result was, before you receive your passport?

No, I am afraid they will not tell you or the applicant, you will have to wait until it's collected from VFS.

I transfer funds from my HBOS (Halifax) into my Thai account online, costs me £9.50 in the UK and about 100 Baht this end and get a good rate, if I were to do the same amount, usually about £5K, via an atm think it would now cost about £76 and at a lower rate, not an insignificant amount.

I am pretty sure that wine and spirits are lumped together under the 1 litre allowance, though doubt if they would kick up a fuss over .5 of a litre over the top.

Yes they hang around like vultures at the Customs point and on my last few trips they have been scanning all suitcases.

It's pretty strange that a bottle of the local firewater costs less than a bottle of wine.

Don't forget that The Nationwide have recently announced that they will be charging on their cards very shortly, but they are still the cheapest.

This of course in addition to a similar charge imposed by the foreign banks, my UK bank, for instance, charges £1.50 plus a 2.75% conversion fee.

Good luck with calling visa section today, a good point that 7by7 made is that it's your girlfriends application - not yours, and if she does re-apply you must address all the issues that concerned the ECO. Remember to keep your cool.

It's not actually in The Indian Embassy, visa applications have to be taken to their outsourced centre on Sukhumvit 25, as I recall it's not far from Asok BTS, on the left coming from the centre of town.

You cannot assume that the ECO will put two and two together regarding the visits to Laos, by the way you had a visa for Laos she didn't need one - but they would have stamped her passport. You need to make case that can prove to the ECO that you have spent time together, but you need to spell it out for them.

I believe Key Visa services in Pattaya/Jomtien (Darren Mcgarry) can handle this for you

I contacted them via their website, they didn't bother responding.

You need to call the Embassy on Monday, and ask to speak to the head of visa section, if you get to speak to her you need to be able to convince her that her Entry Clearance Officer has made a material mistake. It's a long shot, and I doubt very much if she would admit that a mistake has been made, the best you could probably hope for if for her to tell you how to address the concerns of the ECO, and then re=apply.

If you do get to speak to her keep your cool and don't lose your temper, she is very stubborn and she will not back down if you lose it.

Sorry to o hear the result it must be very frustrating for you, unfortunately a visitors visa carries no right of appeal.

If you think the ECO has made a mistake you could ask the manager to revisit, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

You can call the Embassy on the general number, +66 (0) 2 305 8333, and ask to speak to the ECM but they will probably not speak to you.

The Embassy closes at 13.00 on Fridays, 08.00 UK time.

It was announced last year and was going to be in by the end of the year for frequent travellers, but, unusually for Thailand, nothing ever became of it.

Presume they let you on in the end, how did you convince them?

I have booked an Air Asia flight with my Kasikorn Web Card, only time will tell if I will actually get to fly.
