  1. Read the whole story as linked. "The travel insurance company only covers accidents on mopeds of 55cc or less,"

He was not on a moped, I'm sure.

    Your last sentence....BOTH.

It may have been over 55cc, but the definition of Moped I grew up with is any scooter you don't have to shift. I had a friend with a 250 cc Moped in Texas.

Since no scooters less than 100cc can be registered for the street in Thailand, it seems disingenuous that an insurance company can claim (and charge for) coverage for scooters, but limit it to 55cc.

You don't have to "shift"??? Move?

A scooter , for me, is a motorcycle with step-through frame and a platform for the rider's feet. Just like a Vespa

The size of the motor is irrelevant

  2. Many posters fear for the future of the tourist industry and someone mentioned Khao San Road will be badly hit, but this government seems to be going hand in hand with China.

The number of Chinese tourists will increase and these people don't sit in bars all evening.

So now doubt at all, in a few months you will see headlines "Tourist arrivals increse by 10%"

  3. Why can't it be an educational hub?/ I have heard that at some universities no students fail. They must be pretty good.

Incidentally, there was an interesting article in Bangkok Post today about a student who handed in a blank exam paper. The paper was about the 12 morals (or however many there are) for Thai people and the student felt that she disagreed entirelywith this teaching. Anyway read it, if it is still there.

Seriously, how on earth can Thailand be anywhere near the hub of education?

  4. Has there any study that proves that a 300m radius ban on selling alcohol reduces student consumption? Or that enforcing existing age laws wouldn't be more effective?

So how do they justify interference with free, legal trade, and the restricting the alcohol consumption of students of legal age?

    Probably hasn't.

Let's see if there is an increase in alcohol related traffic accidents.

As a student mentioned in the Bangkok Post, it just means he has to travel further to get a drink. It won't stop him drinking.

So how many youngsters will now jump on a motorcycle and ride to the pub instead of walking?

  5. So when will we get something definitive? I'd like to plan an evening out with the wife which includes a couple of drinks with dinner and I don't want to waste my time on restaurants unable to serve alcohol.

I remember a few years back they introduced a similar law. We went out to eat, oredered all the food and decided to have a glass of beer with the food. "Sorry we are too close to the university".

I just got up and walked out ... much to my girlfriend's disgust.

Seriously. though , it is nice to know that they can't serve drinks, before we order the food.

Maybe a good idea to have big signs in the door or windows. "Sorry. No alcohol here!". Similar to the ones that say "We sell cigarettes" (or have they disappeared?)

  6. Another example was once when I renewed my passport and had to transfer the visa from the old passport to the new.

I was at Chaeng Wattana and I could see that I had a long long wait judging by number.

At 11.50 I was still a long long way off and I could see myself sitting there until 4 or 5 pm. Anyway, this officer came out and asked if I spoke Thai. I replied that I did and explained what I was waiting for. He took me into his office and did the whole process of transferring the visa himself. He then went on to tell me that he hated working at Chaeng wattana (it was shortly after they moved from Suan Plu). He told me that he he felt more isolated and didn't have contact with people.

We even had a quick lunch together and I went on my way.

  7. Before I moved out of Phuket for good. I learnt the phrase, "I don't speak English" in Russian

When I was approached by an English speaking tourist I replied: "I don't speak English", in Russian

When I was approached by a Russian speaking tourist I replied: "I don't speak Russian", in English

When I was approached by a Thai male I replied: "I don't speak Thai", in English

When I approached a Thai female I spoke my very best pasa Thai.

I didn't move here for the temples and food.

Actually, I used to do the same in Denmark.

Now, if I start speaking Thai to a Thai person and they reply in English, I pretend I don't speak English but some other Europen language (German, Italian or whatever.) I hate the two language conversations, especially if their English is not up to it.

    As for advantages:

    1. Being accepted at many more places.

    2. Being treated with more respect in shops, markets and so on

    3. Being able to find different "non-touristis" places in Thailand

    4. Paying "Thai" prices

    5. Being able to talk to some really cute girls that don't speak English :)

There are many more advantages, but I will leave them to other TV members.

  8. I'm sure I read somewhere that motorcycles are allowed on the footpath in some circumstances.

Those dropped kerbs at junctions are not for wheelchairs!

It is against the law, ask the Thaivisa lawyer.

I see cops and other motorcyclists doing it every day.

I anm sure I read it was legal if there were traffic jams

  9. We spent about 6,000 Baht there the other day, which sister-in-law put on her card and was told she'd receive 30 Baht off next purchase.

    Only 30 baht???

Usually we get 100 to 120 baht per 1000 spent. Stop the bill at 1000. Pick up the 120 discount coupo and use it on the rest of your goods.

Stupid idea but it is the only way as these 120 baht discount coupons are only valid for 2 or 3 days.

Last time I got one I gave it to the lady behind me in the queue as I knew I couldn't use it within the three days it was valid. (Oh you have to buy for at least 300 baht to be able to use the coupon)

Plan well and you can save about 600 baht on your 6000 Baht worth of purchase.

Oh .... and you annoy the customers behind you as it take time to do all those transactions.

  10. "50 euros", "$17", "£11" why do you guys mention these prices? This is Thailand not Usa or Europe.

When I lived in Europe my hospitals were free so even 10 baht would be extortionate compared with that.

The OP feels ripped off because he paid 600 baht for Doctor's fees and other medical charges. I agree with him. I had to have a wound attended to every day for a week and each time they tried to weigh me, take my temperature and blood pressure for a total of about 900 Baht . I told them that there was no need to do that. I only wanted my wound cleaned and a new dressing. I still received the bill with about 1000 Baht for "other medical fees", Everytime I had to fight to have the amount removed from my bill.

I couldn't give a #$%^ if you say it "is only 50 dollars" " 10 pounds" . This is Thailand and 1000 Baht is a rip off just to be weighed and have one's temperature taken.

  11. "We hope Japanese authorities understand that he has no intention to overstay. It's just that he had been detained for interrogation over the gun incident," Police Spokesman Lt-General Prawut Thavornsiri said yesterday.

Oh.... what about the foreign tourists who are hospitalised in Thailand just before their visa expires?

They have no intention of overstaying, but still get fined if they don't apply for an extension.
