  1. I went to Foodland's "Took la dee" restaurant yesterday with my girlfriend and when we had finished eating she told me to get the bill. I put my hand in the air and tried to attract their attention.

The waiter and waitress were playing around with each other and had no time for customers.

My girlfriend started to get impatient and told me to do something. At the same time the waiter actually saw me and turned his back to me and walked off.

Usually I can control myself, but yesterday I lost it and shouted in Thai "what are you doing? Why don't you want to give me the bill?"

The manager came over and apologised and told me that the young people didn't speak English and didn't know that I sppke Thai.

I don't think it is always racism, but more a fear of speaking English.

  2. Seems like I always get served.

And is no one jumping the lines I'm in.

You are either lucky or live in the country where there are no people.

I see people jumping queues every day and several times a day.

Some Thais accept it and some don't.

But to say you never see it is unbelievable.

  3. I travel by taxi 2 - 4 times each day and I guess about 40% refuse to take me to my destination.

I used to open the rear door and leave it open if they refused to take me. Nowadays they tend to open the front side window. I slowly open the front door, clear my throat and tell them rather slowly and clearly where I want to go. If thye refuse I try and ask why and take as long as possible before I close the door.

The cars behind become very impatient, but what the heck. I have to wait for the next taxi.

Soemtimes I am amazed as to why they say no. Often the road they are on will lead to my destination and they may well pass that area without picking up a fare.

  4. First off, no one in Thailand will give a crap. If a reporter had the balls to confront the MOE about this, no doubt there would another "miscommunication" of some sort and dismissed immediately.

This is changing since MOE allowed recognition of international schools.

The rich, and upper middle income groups are sending their children to schools with English programs or international schools, with the plan for tertiary education overseas, thus, bypassing local universities.

Yeah maybe, but some of these "international schools" or schools wirh English programs are only here for the money. The quality of education is not there.

    I know from experience..

  5. I had a long telephone conversation this morning with a Thai friend who lives in Chiang Mai.

She is absolutely convinced that the smoke and haze comes from Burma. I tried to tell her that Thais were burning the fields too. No way whould she accept this.

Where do these people get their ideas from?

  6. Who would agree to work 24/7/365?

...think of it as a wife you pay a salary to... whistling.gif

So they they get paid, get free room and board, they can come and go as they please and they don't actually have to do anything, correct?

    That's not too bad.

    Do n't be stupid.

They live with and take care of the person.

Maybe they cook, help them get dressed and bathed etc.

Most of the day they sit and watch TV together (or chat with friends on Line). It's not a job where they are actually working constantly. They probably sleep all night long too.

Most are not interested in days off as they don't have friends or family around here, and they want to save money.

  7. My father-in-law was struck by a stroke and we paid for a live in Thai lady to take care of him.

She wasn't a qualified nurse but she could do most of the necessary work.

Salary 15,000 per month + free food.

Later had a Burmese helper who spoke fluent Thai for 8,500 month.

  8. I have a post paid number which, of course is registered.

No big deal, I thought ........ until one day I met a young girl whose mother worked for AIS amd father was a top military guy.

A vfew days later this girl talked to me about my house, exactly what it looked like, how many people and maids lived in the house. She knew exactly where my wife went every day and at what time. She even knew all financial details of my father-in-law's business. All this from my phone number.

Luckily there was no malice from her side. She just wanted to show off her "connections"

But just shows how dangerous it can be.

  9. I have just taken a motorcycle taxi in Bang Kaer and I noticed the ned ID tag on his back.

His name and number are written clearly in English and there is also a number to call the "passenger protection service", in case of problems.

I welcome this development, but luckily I don't have many problems here in Bang Kaer. In fact they are all very friendly.

Yesterday, however, I had one of the worst experiences. I took a motorcycle on Sukhumvit 23 and normally I pay 10 baht. Yesterday, he grabbed my arm and demanded 40 baht and shouted really loud so others gathered around. Luckily, I met 2 Thai colleagues and they actually supported me.

I guess the "passenger protection number" is too late after being beaten to pulp.

  10. This is the second time I read about snakes in the toilet.

That has made me uncomfortable siting on the bowl and most of the time I have a peek to see if anything is moving in there.

What a life in the sticks.........I'm moving to Pattaya..............hope I don't see a farang emerging from the bowlw00t.gif

I saw a huge python crawl into a Songtaew outside Mike's shopping mall a couple of years ago.

So there are also "legless" snakes in Pattaya.

  11. They will find their lunches in the canteens, which are now being recommended and will later be required. Indoor street food "markets" such as you find in Singapore would not be a bad thing here. Truthfully I love Thai street food, but am not really all that crazy about eating on the street. A similar solution to the one implemented in Singapore would allow vendors to make money, customers to enjoy the food, and everyone to avoid the pollution and garbage of eating by the roadside. Thailand is a civilized country, right?

But can the average office worker afford the 90 baht price tag of many food courts compared with the 30 baht food stalls?
