  3. Sunbelt.............

Although I am not affected, at the moment, as I am on an extention of stay Non Imm 'O' support of Thai wife. I have many friends who are.

There is much confusion at present as to when the 90 day counting starts.

Can you explain this, is it 90 days from 1st October or is it 90 days from date of arrival at the airport????

As an example I have a friend who arrived 2nd July did border runs end 1st August and 1st September. Is he out on the 1st October? Can he make ONE more run on 1st October? Or can he do 3 more runs 1st Oct/Nov/Dec?

Or maybe it is yet another permutation!!!

Sincere apologies if you have already answered this somewhere. There are just so many threads running with contradictory and conflicting info that it is hard to keep track!

  4. Cash. :D

Yes, here cash is king! :D

Most places accept credit cards but they try to hit you with a 3% surcharge..... :o

On most of my major purchase I negotiated a discount for cash, for the few where cash was unavailable I paid by credit card but told them I would go elsewhere if they surcharged me. I have never paid the surcharge.... :D

  5. Hi marttaff

    No cheques.

Keep your loot in the UK & draw via ATMs, apart from the 800KB in a Thai savings a/c.

You can get an ATM card with your Thai savings a/c.

Rent for a minimum of 1 year....... don't be in a rush to build .

Hire a car for a month or so before rushing into a purchase.

70,000B a month will give you a good lifestyle.

Tell NO ONE about the 50,000 squid.

Don't leave the UK without good health/accident insurance.

    Good luck! :D

Sound advice from Udon, as always.

Get a Nationwide ATM account they do not charge for withdrawals other banks charge approx 3%.

If you intend to stay at your home and just have the occassional day/night out your 70K will go far.

If however you like to travel and enjoy nights out with the boys it will soon become severely dented! :D !

Also you must be prepared for the unexpected, trips back to the UK do not come cheap.

If you are ill private hospitals are not cheap and I assure you that you would not wish to stay in a Thai Government hospital.... :o

As a retiree I think you will find the cost of expat health insurance in the UK prohibitive. You cannot just buy an annual travel policy as they have a limit on the number of days per trip.

Every one talks an exchange rate of 70 baht to the pound but it may not always be that way, what will you do if it drops to 60? :D ? That might sound alarmist but it could easily happen!!

Have you ever spent an length of time in rural Isaan? If not I strongly recommend you do before building a house. It is not to everyones liking. :D

I wish you good luck, but I suspect that if you still think in terms of using cheques you are unprepared for this move.

  6. Sunbelt? Or any helpful, experienced souls out there... As it happens I've been with my g/f now for over a year and we're both ready for marriage. I'm 42, she's 31. Regarding the O Visa option which requires 400k baht remitted from overseas to a Thai bank account. My question is does IMM want to see an additional 400k in the bank every year upon appliying for extension? In other words 400k the first year, 800k balance for approval on second year etc.?

And if not, what's to stop people from simply rotating the same 400k in and out of the account every year? ie, can I do that??

Then what do you live on during the year? :o ?

My understanding of the 400K rule is that it is proof that you can support yourself and your family.

I have extended my marriage visa 3 times and each time I have topped up the bank account prior to going to Immigration. I have always shown them proof that all the money that has passed through the account has come from the UK.

They don't seem to be too interested in how much passes through the account each year just that there is 400K+ in the account at the time you make your application.

They have always been helpful and polite as have I, never had any problems and always received the Extension of Stay on the date stated.

Hopefully this will not change....... :D

  7. Just wondering , over the last 5 years Ive been applying for a one year extension under ..support , Married to a Thai

and when I applied at Bangkok it was ...First visit with the wife and paper work, ..then . given a 1 Month under consideration

stamp in my passport, when I returned One Month later , ive all way's been then given the Extension no problems,

So am I reading this now right... next time I apply for my One year extension ....it will be this as quoated ..... ( 6.On extension of stay based support of a Thai national (Marriage visa), before if you applied for this extension of stay, you would get a 30 day consideration stamp. Once you return in 30 days you would get the one year extension. Now it will be the same as an extension of stay based on business with the norm of three 30 day consideration stamps. Immigration will go out and check to see if it’s a real marriage or a sham before issuing the one year.

Or is the new Item 6 , only for first time applications ...?

After applying for 5 years and taking the same wife every time , how can they think its a sham marriage ...? all they need to do is look back on your records and see its the same wife , address Etc...?

    Thanks................. Mumbo

You beat me to it Mumbo.

My situation is the same as yours except I have only applied 4 times always taking the same wife.... :D

Surely they cannot really want to waste the manpower to check that we have a real marriage! :o

    For Sunbelt...........

What is the situation on Permanent Residence? Has that changed?

Also does your company deal with PR applications?

  8. Yorky must have turned over a new leaf! :D !

Same same happened when he came to the party at my place in July....... :o

Although he did very kindly offer to lay on the floor for a photo...... :D

  9. Sorry ...jared

a bit off your topic ...... Ken you said in your post ...."big" funiture store in a Korat suburb called Jo hor. Can you please tell me how to get to this store ( I know where Big C is and Lotus )

    Thanks .......... Mumbo

Turn left onto the Khon Kaen road (#2) at Big C, follow this road for about 5kms and tiurn left onto the Chaiyaphum road (#205) and follow this road also for about 5kms.

The store is called Winner and it is on the left. It has a large red sign that can be seen from some distance.

    Hope this helps Mumbo.

  10. Hi Donz,

Yes you are very perceptive, i did feel the need to get that out. :D

Its just that i remember Thailand , specifically Bangkok, in the 1990's when Chuen Leekpai and Chavalit and Banharn were in charge and they really didn't care about interfering in tourists lives (or indeed Thai lives) they just let it all happen. Whatever.

Bangkok was fun , fun fun. Now the last few times i have been back its much more dull, cant do this , cant do that , and all my Thai friends still there are telling me what an awful , controlled place its becoming.

Anyway i'll say no more .. unless of course you want me to :D

Dull because you can't take drugs? :D ?

As others have said if you fancy a long holiday at the BKK Hilton just carry on "speeding".

Are your Thai friends yaabaa dealers by any chance..... :o

  11. I wonder what the outcome of this decree was?

An interesting topic to revisit at this time?

Gaz, three years later and you really expect them to remember one of their pronouncements? Or even to follow it? post-4641-1157188929.gif

I live in Korat and a couple of months back one of our local MPs was discussing the introduction of this rule for the upcoming election.

He assured me he would still be an MP as he had no Mia Noi...

    My response was :o:D

  12. Congrats........................sorry we couldn't make it,but we have no time for ourselves lately. Still, we sent Yorky in our absence and he normally does enough for everyone from Sulin. :o

Sorry.........that was me. Someone left their id up on the puter.

Shame you couldn't make it Sir Lampy.... :D

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I have passed them onto my wife as it was she who made the day such a success.

It was our pleasure to have you all come and visit.

Ken (of kenandlat) I will pass on your comments to my brother in law.

Yes he is a very cool guy........ :D

  13. I can't say I know a slew of Farang men who are married to Thai women, but so far, all the Swiss, German and American men whom I have met all seem to have adopted a liberal lifestyle. They have their Thai wives and they have prostitutes that they frequent on the side. (at least they claim the women are prostitutes).

Now these are men who have been living in thailand for more than 5 yrs. The sad thing is their older wives turn a blind eye. They have kids, a family house in their home towns and give their husbands their space.

Now I am sure the same applies to farangs married to farangs.. but in those cases, you can say a certain amount of insecurity and dependance on the husband might keep these women quiet.

I am curious as to why the women would put up with this. This is their country and they have rights that their husbands do not have.

Well I am not speaking from personal experience but perhaps the reason they put up with it is the Farang husband is just behaving like a Thai man. :D

Thai women, particularly rural ones, seem to accept that their husbands/boyfriends will have a Mia Noi (Minor Wife) and/or a Mia Len/Lap (Play/Sleeping Wife). :D

Mia Nois are not generally prostitutes although many Thai men pay them an allowance so I suppose accepting money for sex is prostituition. :D

Mia Len/Lap are more likely to be in the "trade" and Thai men pay them by the visit. :o

Just what I've heard you understand...... :D

  14. Anybody who puts FACT in capital letters renders their words suspect

    Your post is inflammatory

Report me to whomever you bloody well want

:D Most all 38 of steven w's posts are "inflammatory" and/or trollish. I think I'll report him. :D

Good on you Ken, too many inflammatory tw*ts here nowadays.... :D:o

Steven W you are a d*ck whose post are not even based on any FACTs whatsoever! :D !

The figures for Thai women being raped by their "land of smile" opposite gender has reached epidemic proportions, many are left to die, or are murdered after the act.

Please vindicate yourself and name the source of this preposterous statement!!!

  15. A post on that other Forum from yesterday says......................

A Doctor who works at the Ratchasima Thonburi and Maharat Hospitals has said that no new cases have been registered lately.

So that is some very good news.

I would like to thank all of you who posted positively and helpfully.

To those who didn't and you know who you are.............. :o

    Thread closed again :D

  16. Lets drop the flaming and accusations and try to stick to factual confirmation of what is a very serious topic.

A very good point sbk, and one that the concerned parents in Korat do try to stick to!

However not always possible when a know it all newbie is continually allowed to make such preposterous accusations.... :o:D

The operator of Korat website forum (Sportrider) asks here why I think he is using this serious topic as a cover to advertise his website, saying his is a "not for profit" site. The answer is in his own words on his site. He intends to set up an online realty agent through his site. He is undoubtedlty thinking ahead about sponsorship once he has a credible membership.

Mods/Admin I started this thread as a serious topic to get information on and warn others about a serious virus that is killing children in the Korat area. I did so as a concerned father.

The thread has been hijacked by diddlysquat who seems to have some serious problems with the operator and the members of a local Korat based Forum!!

I would ask you to please close the thread now as I see no further useful information being posted here!

    Thanks in advance, Derek

I see I can close the thread myself, so I have.
