  1. Sakon Nakhon immigration demand 500 baht for 1 residence cert

you need 1 for each license = 1000 baht for car and motorbike

    been there done that

they say they need to charge more because there are less customers there then bigger places like pattaya

you need long stay visa to get 5 years license

Ah OK mate. Thanks for posting that. Makes me feel a little better :D

Next time I will hopefully be on a non o visa depending on how my job situation is back in Britain.

  2.

When you renew next time they will be valid for 5 years.

That's what the wifey said but apparently it's 1 year for farangs and 5 years for Thais.

I asked the wifey to go back and ask for sure and we were told the same. This is up in Sakon Nakhon (not that it makes any difference).

OP seems to be a bit negative, and just having a down demeanor can incline a Thai to tell you to f-off.  I am fat and cute and smile at everyone.  I am routinely referred to as resembling a big kid, and I can get away with just about anything by smiling and uttering any of the ten Thai words I know and getting the "You speak Thai good, You Narak"

Not at all negative mate. The little Thai I can speak I used, the place was empty and we all had a wee laugh.

  3. Do what I do BigKev, make your own mind up about Thailand and Thai people based on your own experiences and stop letting the opinions of others bother you.....and they clearly do bother you.

Remember, people go to Thailand for all sorts of reasons, I doubt any go to be told the limits of what they can thing and say about their experience there.

Remember too  you are in crowded company, if you are indeed a Newbie here you can be forgiven for not knowing such posts as yours turn up on a regular basis with are boring repetitive theme.

Stop worrying  and enjoy yourself - if you are truly happy with your own choices the opinions of others will not matter a jot.

Absolutely spot on. Apart from the 'jot' bit :D

  4. The benefits of a Thai driving licence?

You can velcro it to your forehead so everyone knows you're not a tourist.

    Thus you get more respect.

A must for those in pursuit of being at one with their thainess, along with the Chang vest, fisher mans pants and big Buddha medallion.

Makes me cringe. I have actually owned a beer lao t-shirt which I thought was OK.

  5. How does Sakon Nakhon size up as a place to hang out as compared to the other cities talked about??

We have the 'golden pond' night club which is usually full of students. There are some other bar/restaurant type places which are fine. As for things to see apart from the usual temples, nong han and phu phan national park which is not far from me, is worth a visit.

  6. Welcome big kev.

Better to be thick skinned and not get caught up in petty arguments. A debate is one thing but some posters like being pedantic just for the sake of it.

    Stay positive.

    Incorrect.

She's probably been fed xenophobic lies by people who haven't a clue.

I was told by a nice intelligent Thai woman that my motorbike is very nice, but it's a shame that such a nice expensive vehicle cannot be owned by me. (with a smirk)

    What do you mean?

Because you cannot own anything here.

Oh right. (removes the pillion seat to show her the copy of the green book listing the motorbike in my name). I think somebody was joking with you. (with a smirk)

Thai woman gets angry, panics and walks away quickly.

After your 1 yr license is expired you simply renew it and are given a 5 yr one. If an idiot employee at the local DoLT says you as a foreigner cannot, take their name and number, and I'll PM you copies of both my 5 yr motorbike and car licenses. Posted Image

Ok mate, hopefully it will be a different employee next time. Looks like my question has been cleared up.

    Thanks guys.

  9. This is a genuine question.

After visiting immigration, hospital and making copy after copy then finally taking a few tests in the driving centre I received my car and motorbike licences.

    Total costs were 1410 baht.

    1000 to immigration

    50 for my health check

    360 at the driving centre.

Both licences are only valid for 1 year and when I renew it, along with all the paperwork again it will still only be valid for 1 year.

  10. I will repeat it once again,if you shut up, things won't happen, you can not piss these guys off, even if they are wrong and stepping on your toes, especially if you are old and alone somewhere,..RIP

That's just plain idiotic. You speak as though we are in the middle of the jungle and it's kill or be killed. If your life is in such a precarious state here you would be better off elsewhere.

For those of us who choose not to live in fear a good rule of thumb is to let the small stuff slide but stand up for yourself. No one should go through life as you suggest. Is that why you really came here? Do you really kowtow to Thais at every turn? There are lots of us here who live our lives just fine and don't live in fear -- nor would we suggest anyone else do the same. Pathetic.

I don't think he means that.

IMO I would let stuff 'slide' here in Thailand a lot more than I would back home, that does not mean I live in fear. This is a place were I wish to stay and I will let nothing stand in the way of that. I will stand up for my family at all costs though.

  11. I'm hoping the rise will continue for a bit, but don't forget a strong pound against the baht means a lot more idiots start showing up in Thailand like we saw in the 2000 onwards until about 2010-2011.

Its something out of your control, I wouldn't worry about it. That would be the last thing on my mind.
