In my village they are there to open the gates if your key card does not work or you have forgotten it. They check all taxis and delivery trucks coming in by taking the DL of the driver and giving a card to give back and get your license when they leave. If asked they will take delivery of any package you have coming if you are not going to be home. They keep the entrance to the muban clean and nice by trimming plants, cutting grass, and watering. They will for a small fee come to your place and water or garden as you like. They let friends and family in to the muban by remembering the car and driver and direct them to my house. We have had the same 4 guards for almost 20 years now and they are like family to the village. Someone buys them breakfast lunch and dinner each and every day as they are good guys, honest and hard working, Its kind of fun seeing which family stops and hands a plastic bag of food and drink to them. Seems like bob has little to no interaction with the guards or the people who live near him. Very different where I live.
