  1. And there is me thinking that opium was a drug. Opium? Poppies? Oh well - back to school.
  2. Oh dear. Note to self. Do no read the last paragraph of AI outpourings. Yet another stark reminder.
  3. I think that wearing a shirt that is covered in $ signs is probably not ideal when presenting a controversial sale.
  4. Confusing for sure. The tours go from Koh Samui to Koh Tao. They seem to have been arrested and taken to Koh Tao police station. Koh Tao is a sub district of Koh Phangan. From the original story - "The suspects were taken to the Koh Tao Police Station in the Koh Pha Ngan district to face charges of being illegal tour guides."
  5. A very appropriate acronym except that there is no dole here in Thailand.
  6. Looking at the photos, I would probably pick MadCow as well.
  7. Trust China with my (small amount) money? No thank you.
  8. Thailand supports the illegal junta in Burma. The junta make most of their money from illegal activities. These businesses are just one of those activities. Stopping the electricity and internet will reduce the cash going into military pockets. Never going to happen but I would be happy to be proved wrong.
  9. Smoke less and be more aware. Nowhere does the article state that alcohol played a major role. To quote "possibly because he was intoxicated" Or possibly because he was stoned? We know that you like to push the 'alcohol deflection' at every opportunity but the reality is that most people cannot tell the difference between alcohol, drugs, mental issues or weed being the source of the problem.
  10. That is just one problem. Thais who can speak good English can get better paid jobs in 5 star hotels or in the cities where street food is abundant. Many Thais do not like working on the islands. Not easy to walk to food areas and shops, costs are higher, less Thais to integrate with, little or no public transport etc I have heard many reasons over the years. Then we have post Covid. During Covid, most hotels and tourism service businesses just sacked all staff. The Thais went back to the mainland. We still have major staff shortages on the islands. Thais are not rushing back. One hotel recently advertised a starting salary of 24,000 baht per month for cleaners. (I lost two staff to the hotel.)
  11. I think that if anyone is doing any poking, it can only be China. Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and the 'buying' of some African nations. To name just a few. 'Soft' loans everywhere and they come with a political price.
  12. That only downgrades the qualification for those that have worked for it. 😞
  13. But before he died, he closed the panel again?
  14. Looks like Gottfrid wrote this story.
  15. Sitting in my office at the pointy end and a military chopper has been flying over very low. Impossible to have a nap. I am told that the folk are here from Bangkok (DSI last time) surveying Samui and checking for illegal land titles and other 'anomalies'. Some plots near me are dodgy. (Four chanote titles have been revoked and more under consideration. They are on the last stage of appeal.) I cannot confirm the reason for the survey, the local Thais told me, but that helicopter is not just sightseeing. The navy were also 'parked up' off shore yesterday.
  16. Damn. 73 last month and my right knee has just started now to give me some aggro.
  17. I agree, especially in domestic disputes. Unfortunately it is all part of the verbal diarrhoea that we fed by AI.
  18. But the hospital does get 5 star reviews on Tripadvisor.
  19. Instead of victim blaming, let's consider the victim. Just one scenario - She is being held captive somewhere and the guy says 'send this message to your folks - or else'. We do not know what is happening. I just hope that she is found alive and well.
  20. Where does it say that please? I cannot find any details as to how he died. Was he swimming and got hit by one? Did it fall off a truck and kill him? Did a fishing boat crash into him? Please enlighten me.
  21. Only for the rich and powerful. There are a few million Thais who would disagree with that comment.
  22. I agree. Also, it is easier to scam folk who go cashless. If someone steals my phone, they do not even see my bank details. (No wifi on it either.)
  23. Not sure that this project is real or not. It was not that long ago that the latest QEII or whatever she is called, had to cancel a visit as the waters were too shallow. At Taling Ngam, Koh Samui, a beautiful beach on the West of the Island, there is a lot of reef. A nice, quiet undeveloped part of Samui the last time that I was there. Oh well. As long as there is money to be made. 😢
