  1. I have respect from my neighbour's, family, friends and Thai people in general. Having been a teacher for over 20 years I'm fully aware of the term " Ajarn". However, I've pointed out to people there's no need to call me "Ajarn" or bow their heads as they pass. I'm happy to be on equal terms. I'm not going to start wearing long trousers and a collared shirt in the village or when shopping or generally out and about. I don't need to in an attempt to look important. I'd much rather blend in. I speak good Thai and people who know me know that. When I'm out and about I speak Thai from the off so people know not to be afraid of a language barrier. When I'm in the village I make an effort to try to communicate in Khmer.
  2. Thats not what you said. You've changed your story. Even poor people sometimes find the money for a bribe. As I said, all males gave to go. They sll have to register. What they do when they get there is, in some cases, a different matter. A bribe is to say they've been and drew black. Not that they didn't have to go.
  3. Yes, i know. Read my comment. It's not just certain schools. All schools governed by OBEC have Ror Dor from year 10 to 12.
  4. Everyone has to attend and pick a card unless they have a disability or stay in full time, further education. Even then, after finishing their studies, they may have to attend a lesser program. One of my students qualified as a dentist. Upon qualification he attended as a dentist within the armed services for 6 months. There is also an exemption for those that chose to study "Ror Dor" at school.
  5. This thread is about the idea that Farang have no standing in Thai society. Your post brings in the bigger picture. That is, that Hi-So Thais don't respect those supposedly "lower" than them. Of course this happens. It happens all over the world. However, it has nothing to do with being a Farang. The poster we both initially replied to has some sort of hang up about Farang and Thai relationships. Probably something he brought upon himself.
  6. Rural Buriram. She was the only mixed race student in both primary and secondary school. Your use of "white Thai" is strange. I don't know everyone in our district so wouldn't know how many mixed race there are.
  7. Our daughter, now 23, has never had any issues at any time with regards to what you've posted. Even when I've been with her, she's been treated just as if she was Thai. She does have a Thai Christian name. It certainly helps to keep her Thai identity.I wanted that for her. A Thai name, my surname and an English nickname. Best of both worlds.
  8. He will avoid conscription if he picks a black card. Let him do it. Don't pay for him to avoid his responsibility. It might turn him into a "money matters most" sort of person.
  9. It's not valid waste of time and I think you'll find my reply was correct. In any hotel I've been in with my wife, we've always been respected. Your definition of respect is slightly narrow. I would add courtesy and politeness. I've never been in a hotel in Pattaya with my wife so I wouldn't know about that.
  10. You might wish to look at the history of the Gui people and how the knowledge of them has diminished over time and how the names have been misused. Then, you'll know. Ask some Gui elders what they were called and what they are called now. That's what I did.
  11. You've clearly failed to get on and are blaming everyone else and assume everyone else is in the same boat. It is plain and clear where the blame lies here.
  12. It's the answer your posts deserve. Respect is a two way thing. It's earned by both parties. I've been in hotels with my wife and received respect from all corners. Same as I've lived in my wife's village and given the locals respect.
  13. You appear to be the only one suggesting this. Speaks volumes.
  14. There are beach shorts and regular day to day shorts. There's nothing wrong with wearing the appropriate ones on a day to day basis. No need for a collard shirt either. A t shirt or a sports vest is also fine to wear.
  15. Not quite. Chinese were setting up shop in Thailand long before the Farangs came to live.
  16. I'll wait for the poster I aimed the question at to answer. Thanks.
  17. If you worked for the government you should have social security. Why are you paying for medical services?
  18. I'm not a farang. My name is John. It's an incorrect statement as he is a farang. 555
  19. Said the poster complaining about discrimination.
  20. The problem with making things up is you need to remember what you've already said. You've contradicted yourself more than once. Stick to the truth, you won't make so many mistakes.
  21. You clearly haven't been everywhere in Isaan. Stick to under bridges.
