  1. Yes like all things I guess it grows & evolves

into more of a party. Given they have super soaker's now

    & such smile.png

The last 3 or 4 Songkrans we spent in my wife's family village.

Very mellow old style with the silver bowls being the supply

& a small cup used to dip into it & poured directly on top of your head/shoulders

    or hands..

    More like a blessing

They do have festivities at a nearby river which are fun to watch.

Like two of them inching towards each other on a pole over the river with boxing gloves.

Then they try to knock each other off.

    Or paddle boat races etc.

This year will be our first time staying here in Chiangmai during Songkran.

Probably spend a lot of time inside & go out early or later in the day.

Maybe take one scooter ride past the fun but probably not the moat area

I don't mind getting soaked with govt water but, that moat water is sketchy at best smile.png

  2. I got one a few days ago in Chiang Mai. I went for the black. Not run in yet as haven't had time, but I do like the ergonomics and the torque from low-ish revs. Also love the standard tyres - Pirelli Scorpions. I had them before on a KLR650, and they were great road tyres. I don't know about the claimed use off road - the tread is not designed for it. Maybe the 90/10 that Pirelli claim is 10 for rough roads. If so, perfect for Thailand. And I would like to get some frame sliders for it - anyone know where I can get some? And fit to where exactly - the guy at BigWing wouldn't offer a suggestion. The front engine mounting bolts look like the best option. (I know they don't really help with a big slide, but are great for a driveway drop with all of that plastic to worry about).

    Congrats on the new bike!

On the sliders check with RSV Racing or Moth Racing

  3. You guys are actually buying all this?

Might be a day late but has to be a April fools deal wink.png

Anyone who knows enough to mention the motoman break-in does

not need to ask you what you think about swapping to synthetic so soon wink.png

plonk is the sound the fishing line makes when it hits the water

  4. However, the letter would have April 4 as a date, which is not technically 2 months (2 months - 1 day). As a result, does it matter or should i wait at least the letter to be two months?

Just curious but I always thought the 2 month was just an allowance for your first year

I thought thereafter you had to have the funds seasoned for 3 months?

    Can anyone verify? Just curious

    Thanks

  5. My wife does not like it at all.

She usually tells them "Doo Gone" in Thai = just looking.

But then she does not like it even if it is me standing waiting while she looks smile.png

Personally I never do browsing type shopping. If I need something I just go get

it & kind of know where to find it.

So when my wife is browsing I like to go play pied piper with the clerks

in another department. I wander in looking & soon a small train is on my heels.

I stop every so often & pick something up & exclaim to the clerk following...Ooooo Pang Maak Chai Mai?

They always laugh & say Mai Pang but I get a kick out of it when once in a while one will

smile & nod yes. I know they are also bored so do not mind them following & they almost never say anything

unless asked. Not like they are being pushy for sales at least not in my experience.

    Have Fun

  6. I am not trying to say you have to report or anything. However, your statement that no such law exists and it is being confused with a landlord's requirement I don't think is correct. I am just putting this for your information.

Yes thanks & yes I felt the same way.

Those word were the cops not mine.

I assumed since the form exists it must be a requirement

But I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Because when you read the requirements you posted from the section 37

    It states...

"An alien having received a temporary entry permit into the Kingdom must comply with the

    following"

So being on a 1 year visa I am not temp per se' ?

But it also says in this wording

"Shall notify the police official of the local police station where such alien resides, within twenty

    – four hours from the time of arrival."

The wording "where such alien resides" suggests to me possibly the hotel or landlords? are doing that step.

Perhaps that is the form the hotels use to file back when I was

a tourist I remember having copies of my passport made & a form filled.

If not & such a law existed laying the work on tourist

"An alien having received a temporary entry permit into the Kingdom"

surely you would be told by the airlines

or customs as you arrive in Thailand to proceed to a cop shop?

"within twenty – four hours from the time of arrival."

But also in the following section 5 it addresses folks who stay 90 days or longer.

What they describe I of course comply with thru my 90 day reporting.

So yes I was told to do the TM form & I tried.

But was basically told by the police nope.

Have you ever filed one in Chiang Mai?

  7. I was actually thinking of popping into the police station since someone said it was possible to get one from there. They certainly wouldn't charge a fee. Whether they'd have a clue what I was on about is a different matter. Anyone know how to say "certificate of residency" in Thai? Certificate is normally "ใบ" but I've no idea what Thais say for "residency". Is it "ทำเนียบ" (tham niap) by chance?

I am guessing it would be Tii Pag ที่พัก for residence but maybe yours tam-niiap being official residence

is more correct? & Bai-rap-rong ใบรับรอง for certificate

    so maybe, Tii-Pag... Bai-rap-rong ?

    Good luck though wink.png

When I moved here last year I read on this forum in the visa section someone claimed

when you first move your suppose to report your presence to the police.

Well my wife & I went down & they were all smiles till she told them I needed to report my presence.

Then their faces all turned to mad as they asked what it is I had done in my previous country that required this.

I guess they thought I was a perv or something.

Well come to find out no such law exists but some folks confuse the law that requires landlords

& hotels to report the presence of foreigners smile.png

  8. bank accounts are important even for "little" people. how would they pay monthly recurring expenses such as rent, electricity, gas, water and a dozen other things?

Probably the old fashioned way in cash.

I know where I lived in the USA all the utility companies

were right near each other in town & had walk up windows to accept cash payments.

If they had rent I doubt the landlord would not accept cash either in person or deposited into his account.

I knew many folks who did keep a small credit union or bank account just to have for check cashing

but even that these days can be done elsewhere for a small fee or no fee at the originating bank if

    you have proper ID

Again these are not big depositors but middle class folks who have a savings so small a hiding spot or safe

at home would do just as well. Especially if like Yosh said negative interest rates or more banking fee's become

    common place.

  9. midas:

Rather than a “ limited understanding “ I think it is a “misunderstanding “ as to precisely

what a deposit account in the bank was meant to represent the fallout from which

    will see gradually unfolding.

i agree that there might be indeed a "fallout". unfortunately hardly any alternatives exist.

I would agree with that in the case of the bigger depositors.

But it would be interesting to know what percentage of a banks intake is from middle class customers.

Who in reality do not need much of an alternative.

  10. All that recent hullabaloo in other threads got me wondering

if this might be a good thread?

Not a slagging match mind you 1zgarz5.gif

No need for anyone to mention why they don't like a certain type of bike but why they do

like the type they bought or are shopping for.

So out of interest what do *you* look for when shopping

for a motorcycle? Can be new or used

It is a given budget has its limits so we look within our budget I know I do

But in what order of importance are your checks?

    Is looks the biggest thing?

    Horsepower size?

    Engine characteristics?

    Brand name/loyalty?

Just curious & might be an interesting thread wink.png

  11. The chinese government is trying to keep their economy growing- and remain in power. Wars are bad for business smile.png

All depends on what type of war.

    The saying,

"There's money to be made supplying tools of the trade"

Has been around for many decades & many have gotten filthy rich from it.

Many cite the billions & billions it has cost the US in their small wars. Yet the bulk of it

was paid to companies supplying the tools not the soldiers.

  12. Let's go with almera thinking then but on bigger bikes ,and compare the ducati 1098 to cbr 1000

Ducat 1098 10,700 limit ,cbr 1000 around 18000 limit thinking like almera this would make the ducati disappointing because it doesn't rev enough ,strange how in fact it is probably one of the best bikes out there

I think you might have a digit wrong on the Honda 1000 redline

    I think it is 13k

  13. was just pointing out that 9,10,11000 revs is not a high revving bike try 16-17000rpm that's high revving I guess the nay Sayers have never ridden one of them though if they think a er6 is high reving let them think that.

Not at all, but the Er-6 is a straight competitor to bike in question in almost every way, an R6 isn't in any way whatsoever.

If you can't see that then, well... good luck. smile.png

Agreed.. accept in engine design they are different.. That's the difference.

    Kawasaki 83 x 60 bore Honda 67 x 66.8

There is also another factor which the Ninja 650 boasts a whopping 50% advantage

That is the Power to weight ratio

    Kawasaki 650 72hp/460 lbs = 0.15

    Honda 500 47hp/430 lbs. = 0.10

  14. All the posters complaint about the cbr 500r not rev enough, don't ever buy a ducat then because they to do not rev high either 1098 limited at 10,700 revs best stick with an er6 me thinks......lol

talking about low rev i believe is maybe a bit different from oneself to another. but if you do the match correctly the cbr at 9000rpm vs the ducati at as you stated at 10700rpm thats 1700rpm more. wich i wouldnt directly think of a low rev bike as it already stepped by the 10k limit. atleast thats what i think.
Actually if we all Jai Yen Yen a bit we can pick each others brains & gain things from these kinds of discussions smile.png

If we all agree different strokes for different folks & we all have choices.

It is cool to wonder about things & how they work & why.

You know in regards to the Ducati...Like the Panigale 1199

    Only 10,700 RPM

BUT........it is kicking out a massive brain melting 195 HP !

Why? Of course many things starting with the engine architecture but also

I do notice the Ducati runs a bore almost double its stroke

    similar to F1 cars

Panigale has a Bore & Stroke of 112 x 60.8 for an amazing final ratio of 1.84 !

Wow...now if only they were priced at 200k baht biggrin.png

  15. I'm afraid you're still not fully clued in. The engine is designed the way it is, not to rev past 9000rpm. This is disappointing for a bike dressed and marketed as it is. For example to take a similar engine, midsized P-Twin with the same peak power at 8500, the Kawa 650 is designed to run up past 11000rpm despite having peak power at the same RPM.

That is a pretty valid argument in some ways Almera

I do know where your coming from as I personally prefer revs over torque

for the on/off/on/off tight quick riding that makes me happiest.

But, It is not always the same for everyone & it is what it is.

A lot of riders prefer a torque based engine & that will always have these characteristics.

When 4 strokes first started racing against 2 strokes riders crossing over had to relearn a new

way to ride. Although later Moto GP started building some screaming 4 strokes as they run today wink.png

As to the 650 Kawasaki vs the 500 Honda they are mid sized twins but very different designs.

The 650 actually makes peak at 9k & can hold it till 10+k rpm with even the slightest breathing of

mods like air filter being less restrictive etc.

The reason is back to bore x stroke ratio

The Kawasaki is at a B/S ratio of 1.38 83Bx60S

The Honda is at a B/S ratio of 1.0 67Bx66.8S

That is a big difference in design some would say huge.

Not better or worse but different thinking on the engineers part

in how they wanted their product to react.

  17. if people think that banks are just "holding" their money then why do they expect the bank to pay interest instead of charging for holding it?

in a perverse way the scandals of the last years have also the positive effect of 'educating' complete financial ignorants.

Of course you are correct & anyone who did not know or realize their money was being used

to make money for the banks thru loans etc. were very naive.

But of those that did know I think many did not realize how leveraged the banks were

or that it was even allowed to be at such risk levels.

Also true it has been a steep learning curve for many as they have found out many things in these

last few years if they followed the news at all. Still even today I would not be surprised

if 8 out of 10 Americans thought Bernanke & the FED were a branch of the US government.

But as you say in a perverse way folks are learning. It may cost many but ultimately I think

it will cost the system of banking dearly too. Given today's ZIRP & what folks have learned many will

opt for any alternatives they can think of. They will of course still use banking services but may be inclined

to keep just what they need to operate in a bank each month if that.

I am speaking of the average person not the big boys of course.
