Thailand Faces Economic Question: China and EV Cars
josephbloggs replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Congrats. As you are the man with the news, do you know how it started? Any context at all? And wondering why two people just casually stroll by without even looking at it. Oh, and I wouldn't buy a Lamborghini Aventador either as it might catch fire too. -

Thailand Faces Economic Question: China and EV Cars

But having ICEV factories with 90% local content AND EV factories with 30% local content is even better, no? It's going back to the either / or thing. -

Seriously? Every single EV I have seen or been in has been RHD. Not sure if you live in a parrellel universe? -
Electric Vehicles in Thailand
josephbloggs replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I don't have an EV but I don't think there's any issue at all. In fact an EV is probably better in water than an ICE as if you get water in your air intake or the exhaust you're screwed. An EV doesn't have that issue. EV batteries are sealed you know, they don't just dangle exposed underneath the car. -
Couldn't agree more. I bought two of his books but they were so painful to read - badly written, full of spelling and grammatical mistakes. I have no idea how he got published.

Why True Fiber is so slow connecting abroad?
josephbloggs replied to artotle's topic in IT and Computers
It's because of the red sea breaks from a couple of months ago. That handles the main traffic between Asia and Europe but since those breaks they rerouted via SEA-ME-WE5, but then that got severed so now things are screwed. If it were not for the red sea damage we wouldn't be using SEA-ME-WE5 as far as I understand. If SEA-ME-WE5 is repaired we might get 60% of our original bandwidth to Europe back. -

Serious question: why don't you start an EV fire thread. Then you can post as much as you like and no one will mind. And we might also join in occasionally. -
Thanks, didn't know that.

Electric Vehicles in Thailand
josephbloggs replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
That's an excellent idea! But it's not just asking a question about EVs. I have learned a ton in this thread due to people asking questions about EVs and EV owners answering them - in fact that was the whole reason for this thread in the first place before it got hijacked by the anti-EV brigade. You asked if the charge didn't work and someone explained you can plug it in to any socket. You then expanded by taking it to "but what if your car charger didn't work"? That's not asking a question to learn, that is a leading question because you want the answer to be "then you are bricked" and you can feel you've won because you've found the flaw. I merely pointed out all cars can have single points of failure, nothing unique to EVs or ICEVs, although EVs have a lot less to go wrong. Ask a genuine question and you'll get a helpful answer. But dreaming up "what ifs" to try and prove a misguided point is pointless. I don't even own an EV but it drives me insane. Let me ask you a question: why are you so against EVs? Why do you and EOW scrape the internet to try and find things against them? I really don't get it. -
Electric Vehicles in Thailand
josephbloggs replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Yes, that's them alright! I worked for them from 1995-1999 and then at a 50-50 JV company between them and another big Thai company for another 14-15 years. Very very unusual management style, bizarre in fact. And their JV partner was even worse. Anyway I don't want to take it too far off topic - that is EOW's job. -
Electric Vehicles in Thailand
josephbloggs replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
It is because the same "what ifs" keep coming round and they could easily be substituted for ICEV "what if" scenarios. ie. they are pointless. Rare events can happen to any type of vehicle. You asked what if you were at home and the actual charger in your car somehow broke like you have found the great flaw in EVs! My answer, you get it collected and fixed. What happens if your clutch packs in in your ICEV? You get it picked up and fixed. What happens if your gearbox disintegrates (happened on my WRX after my first set of mods)? You get it collected and fixed. Neither of those scenarios (or my recent Honda episode) are reasons not to buy an ICE, they are just rare events that can happen, just like your theoretical (and unlikely) "all of a sudden the charger breaks" scenario which you posted as though you've put the nail in the EV coffin. -

josephbloggs replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
If your wall box failed you plug it in to any normal socket instead. Not stuffed, but slow. If the actual charger on the car failed you would need to have the car taken to be fixed I would imagine. Likewise if your clutch failed, or your gearbox seized, or your petrol cap jammed. Just more stupid "what ifs" really. Pointless and irritating. Or do ICEVs just keep on working 100% of the time for 100% of the people? Guess what, my wife drove our Honda HR-V (ICEV) home last week and parked it. The next morning it was dead. Stuck in park. No electrics (not even the horn would work). We needed two trucks to get it moved and taken back to Honda. So what if that happens? Should I go posting in ICEV threads to ask what you do with your ICEV if that happens? What if what if what if what if. Yawn yawn yawn yawn. -

Extension Timing Question
josephbloggs replied to josephbloggs's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Thank you everyone for the helpful replies. So seems like I'm safe to leave it till I get back, even if I stay a little longer than planned and might only have a week or so to do it. Important that I remember to get a re-entry permit at the airport when I leave. So my understanding from the replies is that I apply before the 3rd July (my current visa expiry) and they will not give it me right away but will stamp me as "under consideration" and extend my permission to stay to whenever this "under consideration" period extends to. Then if approved I'll get a notification of some sort and go back to get the 12 month stamp? Thanks again to all. -
It would help if you gave an indication of budget or what you are looking for? Just food, or do you want to booze it up? If you want a treat and to make a day of it there is no better than the Sunday brunch at Trader Vic's at the Anantara Riverside. Inside and outdoor seating right on the river, free boat service from Saphan Taksin BTS. Absolutely incredible buffet selection with top quality food: Indian, sushi, lots of seafood, oysters, pasta stations, BBQ stations, salads, meats, dim sum, cheeses, desserts etc. Plus you can order from about 12 a la cart dishes whenever you like: Hokkaido scallops, Australian steak, US prime rib, lobster thermidore, Alaskan king crab, NZ steamed mussels and other goodness which I don't remember - all cooked to order and as much as you like. This makes a difference as it is not sitting under heat lamps, it is cooked fresh when you order it. It's not cheap, 3,500++ including alcohol: beers, wines, spirits, sparkling wine, cocktails (their bloody marys are superb). It's my go to place for a special day out. https://tradervicsbangkok.com/events/ If you don't want something that extravagant the brunch buffet at the Landmark was always excellent although I haven't been for a few years now. Not sure what they charge these days but believe you can get deals on eatigo.

Hi. After 28 years of working here (non B and WPs) I recently changed to a non O based on marriage as I am currently not working. I got a 90 day visa in Vientiane and re-entered Thailand on 5th April, giving me permission to stay until 3rd July. I planned to apply for a 12 month extension in mid-June at CW. However something has come up and it looks as though I now have to go to the UK from 10-23 June or thereabouts. What is my best option? Is it too late to do the renewal application when I come back? And conversely is it too early to do it before I leave? As I have never done this before I am unsure so any advice would be highly appreciated as I am not sure what is best. Many thanks. Edit: I thought about simply applying for another 90 day non O in London while I am there but a) that would be massively inconvenient as I don't plan on staying in London for too long, and b) their website says it is only for UK residents. I am a citizen, but not a resident.

US Embassy Refuses to Pay £14.6m London Congestion Charge Bill
josephbloggs replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Where in London isn't served by a bus? London has an excellent bus service. Tube is hit and miss depending on where you live, but the buses are excellent. And in my recent visits back I have clearly noticed that the traffic is almost non existent. I have family in London and they wouldn't consider having a car as the public transport is so good. The only real reason for needing one is for food shopping but now most people do that online and never visit a supermarket. I've owned cars all my life but if I lived in London I wouldn't consider it, there is just no need for 90% of people. -

The racism level on this thread is high. A successful immigrant Muslim just doesn't sit well with so many of the culturally challenged. -

One dead, 30 injured in Singapore Airlines emergency landing
josephbloggs replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Yeah I have to say everything I have seen and read (including videos posted) suggests that Singapore Airlines and the AOT handled things really well. Good to know the response teams are well trained and the operation went smoothly. In the 18 years since the airport opened nothing like this has ever happened so it is reassuring to see how well organised it was after the plane touched down. Well done to all involved, especially the pilots and medical staff.
