Interesting, soi 5 and 8 are two that in all my time here, I haven't drank on.

Which watering holes do you recommend?

Soi 4 and 22 has always been good. I would often frequent 22.

    Gullivers on Soi 5

A whole lot of places on Soi 8  such as The Kiwi, Stable Lodge, Det 5 etc.

Is housing allowance part of basic salary in This country?  Or it is separated from the basic salary? I am a teacher working in Thailand. Thank you for the help because I was ask to put in the contract the basic salary would be the housing plus the monthly payment I should receive.

You might want to try asking this question on Ajarn.com as I'm sure that question has come up several times.

  3. Back in the late 80'd early 90's very few people brought cars over as the roads were pretty bad shape and not a lot were paved.  In addition the fare for a car was pretty high back then.  Instead there were places near the ferry terminal to park your car.  Later the price was lowered so some people began to bring their cars.  There are a few steep hills but most cars can get up the hills ok.  It's a little harder after it rains and the roads are wet.  Just be careful when driving and you'll be ok.

The visa will be tied to the school, and after the first 90 days you'll have to go to extend it and Immigration will test you a bit to see if you can actually speak some Thai by that point.  If you can't, they could deny the extension.

That said, you do not have to come on an education visa to learn Thai.  You could learn a different language if you wanted to.  Or you could come to study Muay Thai.  Or cooking.  Of course, it's hard for immigration to test you on these things, though I suppose if you're learning cooking, you could always make them something to eat!

Seriously though, a Thai language course is the best way to get an extension to your initial visa because they can clearly see that you're legitimately studying when you impress them with all that you've learned in the first 90 days.

Perhaps get an education visa to study Muay Thai.  If the immigration officer asks for a demonstration you could clearly show him what you have learned.

  5. I used to go to Koh Samet and Koh Chang quite often 30 years ago and then all through the 90's.  300 baht a night got you a front row bungalow on White Sand beach at Koh Chang.  Went down to Kai Bae beach a few times which was where the road ended.  Fast forward to 2007 and Koh Chang was built up over many places on the island.  I had a lot of good times there but the small village atmosphere seems to have left when the big resorts moved in.

Koh Samet was beautiful and close by which made it quicker to get to.  I stayed at Ao Prao once in 1996 when my parents came to visit.  It was very nice.  Only 3-4 places to stay back then if even that.  Now it's chock full of places.  I usually stayed at the main beach on most of my visits there.  I've taken my mtn. bike there and rode all over the island which is a fun day out.

Food was great on both islands and accommodations were generally quite good.  I believe that neither are quite that inexpensive anymore as I haven't visited either island in over 10 years.

  6. There are literally thousands of bars in Pattaya and if they are open will be showing the matches. Now it just comes down to what you want in the bar. Pretty hostesses, food available, blaring sound system, etc.  Some bars are known for supporting certain clubs so that could be another benefit.
