I'm fairly happy that old white amateur 'musicians' playing 70s rock music is frowned upon here.

I'd rather have my ears gouged out than  listen to that sort of stuff.

Nothing wrong with Thai bands playing Thai music IMHO.

Although there is that too, some of the bands were quite young as in all under 30.  They also wrote and performed some of their own material as well as a lot of covers.  I particularly liked one of their songs about Tata Young back in the 90's.  It was quite funny.

There was also an African/American guy that was very good at singing R&B/Soul covers with his band.  Good times!

I take a long bike rides every day on some rural roads and through local villages. What is the consensus on the top 2 or 3 ways to repel or scare off dogs that are chasing and threatening you? Thanks for any suggestions offered.

I have found when out mtn biking that the best way to scare off the barking dogs that are in front of me is to veer aggressively at them.  This tends to scare them as now the object is coming after them.  In my experience, they have always run off.  Still barking, but not threatening me anymore.  Oh, and if riding in a group.  The dogs always go after the last person in the group.

I haven't heard anyone mention the use of a dog whistle.  It emits a high pitched noise that humans don't hear but dogs do.  They don't like it.  From a distance it should repel dogs.  It shouldn't damage their hearing if it is short and not sustained and from a distance greater than 10 meters.  I've not tried one so I don't have any experience with one.

When road biking I generally don't come across a lot of dogs but sometimes I do.

You are obviously an accomplished and fit athlete, and I take my hat off to you. I was not implying people stop, just think twice, and maybe have regular check ups. All the best on your upcoming sojourn, and please stay safe on the roads.

Bye the way, I appreciate it is not my business, but may I ask please which mountain range you are crossing?

Not at all.  It's in the Cascade range of the western US located in Washington State.  Here's a link to the event.  In 2020 it was cancelled due to Covid-19.  Hopefully it's a go this year.

  4. For me, I wouldn't want to stay in Patong or Pattaya.  Both are too conjested.  In Phuket I would stay at one of the other beach communities.  For Pattaya I like Jomtien better.

I'm more familiar with the Pattaya area which is why I say Jomtien would be a better option.  It's a bit cheaper and definitely quieter yet Pattaya is still close by.  I've had friends that moved down to Bang Saray and love it.  Your 3000USD will go further in Jomtien than Phuket.

A lot will also depend what type of activities you like to do and how available they are in each location.

  5. It's a buyers market out there.  I know that I would be offering much less than what they are asking/begging.  If they don't like the price I offer just walk.  There are many condos out there that are unsold and have been for many months or even years.

As has been mentioned before, I would rent a condo in the building that you are thinking about buying into.  This will give you a better feel for what the place is like at different times of the day.  Lease could be short such as 2-3 months.

Let's not forget it was the Back Packers that put Thailand on the tourist map, They can never be held responsible for the destruction.

It wasn't just the backpackers.  The American military had been active in Thailand since the early 60's.  In addition, you did have the Americans that were operating Air Force bases in NE Thailand.  That helped with establishing many airports in that region that might not have been built until much later if at all.  Then there was the American Navy down in Sattahip.  With the escalating war in neighboring Vietnam as well as parts of Laos and Cambodia, Thailand became a popular destination in the 60's and 70's.  After their service was over, quite a few returned to Thailand and set up bars, restaurants, etc.
