  1. Not really a big fan of Phuket, especially Patong, although I have heard that it has changed a bit since my first visit in 1983.  Perhaps some of the other areas would be a bit nicer.

The mayor said nowhere in the article that Pattaya will be the next Miami or Dubai.

He has aspirations to improve the city in many aspects and hopes to attract a different

kind of tourist. He mentions the 2 cities but only as an inspiration, not in any way a comparison.

That's true.  The problem is he chose the wrong city to aspire to be like.  You definitely do not want to aspire to be anything like Miami.

  3. Walking Street will be back again but maybe not quite like it was in its glory days.  For now, Soi B and LK Metro is about it with the odd beer bar here and there.

For non nightlife activities I can still head over to Jomtien and spend a day at the beach.  I can ride my bicycle down to Sattahip via Bang Saray or go for an 8km run (early morning) along Jomtien.

  4. It would be great if the Thai government were to provide free coronavirus vaccinations to all foreigners that are living here legally.  It should include those on PR, retirement visas, education visas, and work permit holders.  Whether this will happen remains to be seen.  If non-Thais were made to pay for the vaccine I would hope that the fee would be nominal.

The U.N. sanctions monitors said imagery and data provided to them by a unidentified member state showed that Pyongyang had breached the annual cap of 500,000 barrels "by several times."

Gee..........I wonder who that unidentified member state could have been??

Woman shocked by 500THB pad kapow at Koh Chang resort, fearful of defamation laws

A Facebook poster who asked if 500 baht was too expensive for two basic Thai dishes at a Koh Chang resort didn't answer the phone after journalists started calling.

She was perhaps mindful after an American man who complained about having to pay corkage on the holiday island was threatened with jail until he apologized.

The lady posted pictures of her breakfast and a bill - her "kapow moo" (pork with basil) and pork fried with garlic plus egg were 250 baht each.

She said she couldn't eat it - the price made her cry.

She said she asked the server if it was a mistake - no, they said, it's the same with rice or over rice.

Hearing this explanation she said she just smiled and paid up.

Daily News reported that most people who commented said this was very expensive, others said resorts were like that and outside it'd be cheaper. Still more said that you should expect that a place like Koh Chang was expensive - after all they have to bring stuff over from the mainland.

Following her post the lady said sorry, she was not answering the phone to all the media outlets who were calling.

She didn't want to be defamatory....she was just saying.

Last year a major international stink happened when an American man in Bangkok got into hot water after a post about his experiences in Koh Chang.

He spent a few days in jail before he apologized.

Thailand has some severe defamation laws, notes Thaivisa - even if you're in the right you can be in the wrong.

    Be warned!

I just asked a Thai female to take a look at the photo of the dish, the bill, and the total price.  She came to the same conclusion as many here that the price was much to expensive.  Had it been 150 baht each for a total of 300 baht would have been plenty considering it is on an island.

Yep, heard the same. Hopefully this short closure will allow they to clear out the girls who have been there since 1978 with younger versions.

I hope that this rumour is true!  Would be nice if all the female staff were born after 1990.

There is already such a system in place. Back when I had my work permit before retiring, I was old enough for a BTS discount card. Couldn't get one. Not Thai.

Try again.  I have a couple of friends that are both over age 70 and have lived in Bangkok for over 40 years.  They both have the BTS discount card that they got because of their age.  I think maybe their Thai wives helped them in getting the cards.

Mobile phones certainly existed but they were less common. Coke dealers, city traders, band tour managers had mobile phones..about the size of a small house brick.

That is correct!  I had a pretty big brick too.  Got a smaller and lighter phone a few years later.  Then got a digital Motorola phone in 1995.

Just watched it: Excellent video.  The scenes of Washington Sq. and Queen's Park reminded me of how we never really appreciate how unique and special such places are until they're gone.

Was that the inside of "Cactus" at "14:00"?  What a combo: great food, totally uninhibited ladies.  Sadly; John just reported that one of the long time girls was recently murdered by her husband.

How did ten years go by so quickly.

Do you have a link to the video?
