  1. I'm by no means an expert but I'm wondering if the false rental market around Sukhumvit that has been largely driven by Japanese money will have a post flood hangover.......

We talked about a post flood sale of our house in a nice Sansiri MooBaan at Bangna....not flooded, big pumps underground etc etc.....but if I drive up to the main gate I can see that at least 10 other people have had the same idea by the number of for sale signs that have sprung up in the last month.........

  2. Eminence has a distributor here and you can contact them directly:

    http://www.mynpe.com/index_product.php

    Not sure about Celestion.

Bangkok is a wonderful place to go boutique Amp shopping.

Matchless/Diezel/Dr Z/Egnater/Two Rock/Cornford - Guitar Alley in Central World - Waaaaayyyyy over priced!

Bogner - Pedals Park - Times Sq

    Diamond/Hayden/VHT - Strings Shop Soi 24

Soldano/Fuchs - Rock Planet Central World

Of course all the common brands here too......

  3. @hellodolly

Yes but how would this country prosper if the working class could speak English?

Still a relatively inexpensive location yet the back office boom completely passed the country by. Lack of English speaking resources being a major factor! By speaking English maybe that cook or assembly line worker would have other career options?

Our mate Taksin knew it when he said that Thai golf caddies were the best in the world and the country could prosper by exporting them to the world but guess what? None of them can speak English well enough to forge a career overseas.

  4. I salute Khun Sek, speaking truth to power.

    Couldnt agree more.

Stick it to the man.......thats where the great music of our time came from, sticking it to the man.

The only problem for Sek now is Thai style business where an independent label cannot distribute product, remembering that a big % of this country is still using physical product rather than online distribution. Watch Sek's music disappear from stores as Grammy plays the heavy and extracts its revenge.

  5. Didnt read the other thread but I'd recommend Music Society at Ratchtewi BTS/CoCo Walk.

In rooms 5 and 6 they have very good tube half stacks ..... 5150, Mesa Rectifier, Laney AOR, Koch ..they go as loud as you could want and the PAs are ok for you to pump yr Mac through.

Every other room I've been in has truly awful made in china/india Marshall solid state combos for the same hourly price........

  6. Have also seen fake music man, warwick, fender and gibson.

There is a store near ratchetewi selling them.

Not Music Society in CoCo Walk? Its all genuine in there and some wonderful guitars they have too.......including all the brands you mentioned.

Just for a laugh I grabbed some Music Man serial numbers off the guitars in there and verified them with Ernie Ball......ALL legit, sold new in TH through Music Concept and 2nd hand at Music Society.

Good guys and the owner must have deep pockets with all the guitars and amps he brings in. His new white Suhr Modern is STUNNING. Now his old standard is for sale.

I'm ok to point out shops selling obvious fakes but please name and shame as those guys don't deserve to be guilty by association or location.

  7. I have an ATA rack case sitting in Singapore that I want to get shipped up here. Not worried about the cost of shipping but I've called all the usual suspects (FedEx etc) who will only ship if I have an account or letter of authorisation to charge to an account, which I dont.

Any ideas about how I can get it here?

Its not huge but I dont feel comfortable asking someone from work to bring it back with them from a work trip so only want to use a freight service.......

  8. Farm Chokchai Steakhouse is an American-style steakhouse complete with covered wagon motifs. Not a bad New York strip at the one on Suk. Soi 23.

Yeah our kids love that place but the prices have gone up and while the meat is decent, the way they cook it is average at best. Might as well pay the extra and get a decent steak at Tenderloins or the Aussie pub

  9. I go past there every day and to be honest I didnt know they were a real hotel offering overnight accommodation...if you know what I mean!?

I thought it was a place you could go if you needed a room for a couple of hours for an ...ahem.....business meeting...cough cough

  10. SO: how do you know it's a real American Strat, not a Mexican Strat which are not bad, and most importantly... not a Chinese knock-off? Anybody knowledgeable on what to look for? I sold my Mexican Strat last year in the US, and miss having an electric axe.

Serial number will start with US and then the year. A 2011 US standard will be US11xxxxxxxxxxxx

The modern day standard strats are very fine production guitars right down to the rolled fret edges...I doubt a knock off producer would do that

  11. What a GREAT day! My first one and completely unexpected.....had a brilliant time.

I have to say the quality of the entertainment was top notch. Soi Dogs are as fine a blues band as you will find and the rock band after them were fantastic as both entertainers and musicians. Didn't catch their name though, maybe I wasn't listening or trying to get another beer. The announcer said Soi Dogs play at Tokyo Joes but didnt tell us where we could see the rock band...anyone know who they were and if they play anywhere?

Both bands many notches above the typical crap bar bands you find in Bangkok and I would LOVE to go out and hear more decent music.........my crappy Stratocaster bedroom playing doesnt compare

  12. My own personal favourite is David Gilmour however there are only 2 rock guitar players the were 'once in a generation' guys. They both turned the way the guitar was played on its head

    1. Jimi Hendrix

    2. Eddie Van Halen

Both of them highly underrated rhythm players as well.

I was in my teens when I first heard Eruption, even though it had been out a few years, and it was surely a life changing moment for me.

EVH also was responsible for pioneering things like SuperStrats (humbuckers and floyds in a strat) - Wax potted pickups - Dtuna ...

I don't love Jimi (blasphemy) but I do understand how important he was in the evolution of the electric guitar and why he should be at number 1

  13. The 2011 American Standard Strats are some of the best production guitars Fender have made in a long long time...the quality is superb, check the reviews.

I only just bought one about 3 weeks ago from the local distributor who have a shop called Music Concept on level 3 of central world. If you go there you will see lots of Strats. Unfortunately there is no more stock of the American Standard until Jan if you can wait.

40k baht which is about right given freight and import taxes. The US street price is $999

They come with a very nice SKB hardcase.

If you can pay the extra that will be a better buy than the 1990 one at 26000 in my opinion.

  14. I have an LED that looks amazing viewing the Avatar Blu Ray

Unfortunately your friends at True have never seen full HD and using their set top box will result in ugly colouring and unacceptable pixelation. Some people may have a stronger stomach for it but I cannot watch True on LED

My old plasma upstairs handles an SD signal much more efficiently.

Moral of the story: Go for a cheap Plasma and switch to LED in 5 years when True have worked out what HD is (their current 'HD' offering is down around the entry point to being able to call it HD but it is not full HD)

  15. I went as its right by my house.

At 5pm it was normal Ikea busy, maybe a bit busier....lots of cars, queues for check out and hotdogs and a steady stream of people inside. Mostly foreigners or Thais that looked like they had been overseas as students and are all the english speaking middle class, so its going to take a while to catch on with the rest I reckon. Once people cotton on to the fact that they have 7 baht ice creams and 15 baht hotdogs you can guarantee family outings over the weekends.

Its bigger than any IKEA I've been in. Its bigger than some countries I've been in.

Prices are decent, better than Singapore. Someone from Singapore served us on checkout so they have imported staff and are expecting chaos. A lot of the staff are non Thai speaking which matches the demographic I guess.

I cant agree with the IKEA is crap comments. It has its place for sure and some of the so called cheap rubbish crap I have built from a flatpack has survived moves all around Asia and is still holding together long after some of the teak stuff has gone by the wayside. If I want to replace it or throw it out and start again then so be it, it is affordable.

The wife went straight for some of the knick knacks that are Ikea staples like dish racks, tea lights, fluff remover etc and you really cant buy them all in the one place in TH now so its not just about flatpacked furniture.

I give it the thumbs up with a caveat around thinking it may go in to meltdown once the weekend arrives. Go early and walk in the doors at opening time.

Only negative was they were allowing no more than 10 kids at a time in the kids club so there was an hour wait to get the little ones in which meant we ended up spending a fraction of what we would have if we didnt have to drag the kids around the store......

Carter is a blow but man for man the All Blacks can still match it with any other team........

The other teams flyhalves arent exactly doing any better than Slade/Cruden/Weepu. Jonny is a shell of his former self and Cooper is brilliant for 5 mins and woeful for the other 75. Having seen Steyn already on the plane the Boks lose their long range kicking option......injuries were always going to play a part as all teams are finding out now.

I still think its the blacks to lose but I also think the French are going to surprise through the knockout stages

Saw this on the web earlier:

    ab-dc=(c+h+o+k+e)

the French? that would be a surprise seeing that Tonga beat them yesterday

It might appear that I know a little more about Rugby than people gave me credit for a few weeks back!!

  17. All we are missing now is one of these at ploenchit bts so we can go from promphong to siam without going into fast food withdrawl.

A chance would be a fine thing!! I've worked in Ploenchit for years and find it to be the worst place in BKK to find a bite to eat for lunch or even a beer after work.

  18. We have the catalogue, seems reasonably priced when compared to Ikea Singapore and Sydney which are the only ones we know. Set of drawers we bought for the kids room was $125 Singapore dollars and in Thailand they are in the catalogue for 2000b which is a big saving.

Interesting point about teak compared to the cheap Ikea stuff. At least with Ikea you know what you are buying. I have a shelf to hold DVD's that was less than a hundred Aussie dollars. Its all chipboard BUT its survived a move from one house to another in Sydney, up to Singapore then up here to Bangkok over the course of about 5-6 years and still going strong. I have a teak set of drawers that I bought up here that is under 12 months old and is cracking already. You've got no real way of knowing whether the teak has been treated the right way through the manufacturing process.

Gotta love the hotdogs at 15baht a pop too......
