  1. I was recently turned down for health coverage due to my 'past history.' I'm looking for affordable

basic health insurance. Single, male, age 45.

Apparently 'heart issues' are a big red flag for underwriters, regardless of what the issue is, or whether

    it has been resolved.

I had a valve replacement last january, due to endocarditis when i was younger. it's been fixed, i'm

fully recovered, and this is a disease that is not chronic. okay, i had high cholesterol, but that's

been controlled for years. am taking a statin drug for cholesterol, but no anti-coagulants. no

    other medications.

I asked about a "no heart-related condition" exclusion rider, but was basically told i'm not insurable

due to past history in conjuction with lifestyle and habits. apparently healthy people who cycle

daily, run marathons, neither smoke nor drink nor take drugs, are poor risks.

Just looking for basic coverage, nothing fancy. don't need a lot of extras. something that will cover

me if hit by a bus or get appendicitis. major medical emergency type stuff.

I would think you have no chance of getting insurance in Thailand - have you tried your home country ?

  2. Yes you are quite correct.

    The amount is Third Party.

Motor is insured for 450,000 total loss, accident fire and theft.

Mecical is only 100,00 per person (6).

    Bail bond 200,000.

    Sorry for the mishtake.

Medical 100k is close to nothing and 200k bailbond is a joke. My bailbond is 2 mill baht. Normally required bailbond is 1/3 of what you are accused of.

Would not like to know what sort of trouble you expect to get into - certainly nothing to do with motoring will cost that amount !

  3. ThaiVisaInsurance could you please give some more feedback on this. I am quite happy to go to your office in South Pattaya - I have been there before. However, I have a few weeks yet to look into all this and really could do with some help.

I find it pointless going to any insurance office before I know what it is I want!

As I asked above, if I have an accident I need to know how much I could increase medical insurance to - what is a 'typical' figure in your experience.

Also, how can I know where I would be taken by the ambulance. I get the impression an ambulance arrives and depending on who has 'bribed' them the most - that is the hospital I will be taken to. If I am conscious then I can perhaps influence this decison. If I am unconscious - then what??

I am not used to this - as in the UK we have the National Health Service and we just get taken to the local NHS emergency room. :)

edit: recently I took my Thai wife to the Queen Sikrit hospital in Sattahip. The service was excellent. She needed an eye scan for her driving license. The cost was half of that of the Bangkok Pattaya hospital. This cost was the same for her or a farang as it was a 'specialist' service. The point I am making - is that in an accident I would be happy to go to a local government hospital and pay the 'farang' rate for the emergency treatment and then go to a private hospital later on if necessary - how can I make that happen???

Would of thought that in an emergency you would want to go as quick as possible to the nearest hospital wherever you are in Thailand - whatever the name/cost.

On the other hand, why wait for an ambulance, flag down the nearest baht bus and tell them where to take you.

  4. The place on Soi Diana is a good deal for the money. What's with the snide comment about it in the title of the thread?

    Not snide!

In order to enjoy the 99 baht daily special on Soi Diana you must order a minimum of one drink.

    UPDATE

The Bowling Green (Soi Xzyte) weekend special now offers:

    Roast Beef Dinner: 140 Baht

    Roast Pork Dinner: 99 Baht

    Roast Chicken Dinner: 99 baht

All drinks until 7.00pm: 55 Baht.

:) Hidden extra's, 1 drink - do you not normally have a drink with your meal ...................

  5. The ten and 20 meg service that is offered cannot be compared with TT&T, and TOT ADSL over the phone lines as the new service is by Fiber optic cable.

    Barry

Which company is offering this 10 and 20 meg Fibre Optic service? Is it the 3BB deal?

No, 3BB service is only delivered over 2 phone wires

  6. The sad news is that an excellent new Italian bakery has opened in Chiang Mai. The news is sad because my wife also has a bakery and I hate the thought of serious competition. The only good news in all this is that the new bakery is Italian so mostly isn't offering items that would compete with my wife's products. I lived in New York City for 30 years and never had much use for the multitude of Italian bakeries there. Their producs either tasted either very dry or as though their flavorings had been created somewhere in the vicinity of a refinery.

But this place is different. I briefly chatted with the owner, a young Italian woman, who told me that hers are family recipes. Realy dairy products are used here. I suspect that she comes from Northern Italy but I neglected to ask. At any rate, the name of the bakery is Cannella Cafe. I wouldn't be surprised if the espresso is delicious too but since I don't like coffee I can't say for sure.

The bakery is located on 51 Singharat Rd. Soi 4. It's roughly halfway between Siam TV and the Thai Airways Headquarters. Phone number is 0-5341-7727. I've attached a map.

    Ok, I give in - where's your wife's bakery ................ ?

  7. I need to renew my auto insurance next month and would like to use a broker in Pattaya. Anybody have any suggestions? Honda dealer provided the 1st class insurance last year, for a fee of course.

The best I've found is AA Insurance Brokers - also involved with Thai Visa :)

    Good Morning,

An American friend has no private health insurance, and no money. He is covered by Medicare, but only in the U.S., of course. If he ever needs medical treatment, but is too ill to travel to the U.S., I wonder if there is any place closer to Thailand that would accept Medicare (for a civilian, non-veteran). I am thinking possibly of military bases in The Philippines or Korea or Japan, or something like that. About Guam? Where the hel_l is Guam in relation to Thailand, anyway, and would it be easier to get there from Thailand rather than going to California?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, lah!

    Aloha,

    Rex

Medicare overseas? Zero to zip. If he has no $$, might just be better for him to return to California, if that's where he's from, and go on welfare. He's probably not paying for Medicare Part B either, I'd bet. I'm not since I'm in Thailand, don't plan to access Medicare in the U.S.

    Mac

Agreed - if he cannot support himself why is he here - better of back in the States.

  9. Long time ago, 6-7 years, there was a monthly magazine i Chiang Mai that also had a section for Chiang Rai. Is that one still around ?

I have found "City Life" and understand that one is a monthly one. Is that a free magazine living on ads?

I am NOT going to start a new magazine, just a friend wants to have some ads in Chiang Mai and I try to help him.

I got the link to Citylife so if there is another one I apreciate if you give me the link.

    Thanks!

    :D:D:D

Advertise on Thai Visa - better and cheaper than using magazines :)

  10. Quite apart from how dangerous they are, they cannot be registered and so illegal on the roads. Should you cause an accident then, as you have no insurance, you are wide open to whatever claims the pasty may demand.

  11. The TAX boys from BKK have just confiscated 5 big bikes from 2 shops in Udon, seems like there is a clampdown on import? tax, not so much the green book issue, I have paid my TAX, 16000bht on a 1999 CB 1300, and bought insurance from the govt. dept., so I am mostly legal.

Its about time the govt. reduced the cost of the plates , and then we would all register, and pay tax every year after that.

Hehehehe - love this : "mostly legal" . Sorry but you are illegal, full stop, and as someone else pointed out if you have an accident you are not covered and may need an aufull lot of money to bribe your way out, or go to jail.

  12. It would appear to me that compensation should come from JCC. I think that property belonged to JCC and they sold out their residents by selling it to VT 7.

This is quite correct, JCC have only themselves to blame and if they imagine VT7 will be torn down then they are mistaken.

As for all this wasted money being spent on Lawyers etc., that is a great mistake by a few misguided individuals who are causing all the other owners in JCC to throw good money after bad. My feeling is that the owners should get their money back from these few individuals.

  13. Bummer, ctrunfree. Either the food has gone downhill since I was last there, quite a time ago, or we have a further clue that our tastes in food differ. I'm thinking the former, but hardly encouraged to check it out.

Back to San Sabai, great food, great service, great live music, great prices.

    Directions please.

    Errrrrr, Google ?
