UK Police mocked for investigating a swarm of bees in Hampshire
GroveHillWanderer replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Except they didn't "investigate" a swarm of bees. They were informed of the situation by members of the public, passed the information on to the council and a local beekeeper, and then continued on their patrol. There was no investigation, just a relay of information. -
Updates and events in the War in Ukraine 2025
GroveHillWanderer replied to cdnvic's topic in The War in Ukraine
Yes, they did build tens of thousands of fallout shelters in New York - back in the 1960's. As the article below points out, they have not been maintained since funding for them was stopped in 1970 and most are probably no longer fit for purpose (if they ever really were). https://gothamist.com/news/nuclear-attack-hits-nyc-these-fallout-shelter-signs-wont-protect-you If a nuclear attack hits NYC, these fallout shelters won't protect you -
While knife crime has increased since Khan has been mayor, it's just part of a national trend and in fact, as the article below points out: Crime in London has increased at a lower rate than other areas of the country https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/city-of-london-sadiq-khan-england-wales-met-b2527057.html As this article mentions, there has been: So as compared to the rest of the UK, Khan has done very slightly better, in fact.

Report Thailand Tightens Alcohol Sales: New Rules Take Effect
GroveHillWanderer replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Not available in certain selected outlets because they've misconfigured their software is not the same as it being banned, though. -
It says frost if you don't include the descriptive text. Once you use a screen shot including the accompanying text, it suggests white mold.
-
This is what I got by doing a Google Lens search: "The white, powdery, and somewhat crystalline substance near the refrigerator in the image, described as easily removed and not frost, could be several things based on the provided context and common household issues: White Mold: This is a type of fungus that can appear as a white, fuzzy, or powdery substance, often confused with salt deposits. It thrives in moist, humid environments and can grow on various surfaces, including organic materials like those found in or around a refrigerator. Efflorescence: This is a crystalline salt deposit that forms on surfaces like concrete or masonry when water containing dissolved salts evaporates, leaving the salts behind. While more common on building materials, it's possible for minerals to be carried to the surface by moisture and leave a residue. Mineral Deposits from Hard Water: If you have hard water, mineral deposits like calcium can accumulate, especially in areas where water evaporates, such as around a refrigerator's ice maker or water dispenser. These deposits can appear as a white, powdery, or scaly residue. Refrigerator Defrost Drain Line Issue: A frozen or restricted defrost drain line in the freezer can cause a build-up of ice and potentially lead to a white, powdery substance being expelled or accumulating near the appliance as the ice melts and refreezes or as minerals are left behind.

How to open a Bank account in 2025?
GroveHillWanderer replied to BS25's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I got married to a Thai in Thailand and I didn't open my first Thai bank account till some 20 years later. As someone already pointed out, you don't need a Thai bank account to get married here. He doesn't say he lived in Thailand before - and says his marriage was only registered in February of this year. -
Report Thailand Tightens Alcohol Sales: New Rules Take Effect
GroveHillWanderer replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
It's not, as far as I know. I think the problem is that in some stores (including 7-11, possibly?) they have misconfigured their sales software such that Heineken 0% cannot be rung up on their tills during the restricted times. However in other supermarkets where this is not automatically controlled, I have been able to persuade them to sell me it, by pointing out that it is in fact a soft drink, not alcohol. -

Something lost in the translation being used here, perhaps? According to the article in The Nation about this, the exceptions are as follows: https://www.nationthailand.com/news/policy/40051813 So if your bar is licensed under the Entertainment Venue Act, the restrictions wouldn't apply. -
Immigration American Man Arrested for 388-Day Overstay in Sri Sa Ket
GroveHillWanderer replied to webfact's topic in Isaan News
There is no fixed association between surname and skin colour. For instance, this is Soledad O'Brien, a well-known American broadcast journalist. And yes, that is her birth name, not her married name. -
Is Melatonin Unavailable in Thailand Now?
GroveHillWanderer replied to racket's topic in Health and Medicine
Melatonin is not addictive. It is not associated with physical dependency or withdrawal symptoms. Addiction involves changes to brain circuitry and is marked by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite negative consequences. These are not behaviours associated with melatonin. However, some people may develop a psychological dependence on melatonin, meaning they feel they need it to fall asleep, and find it difficult to get to sleep without it. In the UK, there is a non-addictive anti-depressant called Trazodone that is available on the NHS. According to the NHS info page on this drug: https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/trazodone/common-questions-about-trazodone/ So while it can help you sleep when you're taking it, it can make it more difficult to sleep when you stop. So a mixed benefit, apparently. -
Of course this doesn't mean Sharia is next. That's akin to saying that because red is a colour commonly associated with communism, having red in a state flag means you're just a step away from the state becoming communist. It's a logical fallacy.
-
That's what @hotandsticky was advising. But at check in, you show the British passport. If you show the Thai one, they'll ask where his visa to enter the UK is.

(Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted a report on Tuesday that said evidence does not support a link between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders, ahead of a two-day meeting of an advisory panel later this week. https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/us-cdc-report-shows-no-link-between-thimerosal-containing-vaccines-and-autism/ar-AA1HljK0

Do u know the difference speaking thai..Laos.. Khmer
GroveHillWanderer replied to norsurin's topic in General Topics
It depends on what you mean by "almost the same." As mentioned in the post by @fredwiggy, they: I have known both Thai people from Isan and Lao people who, while not speaking the other's language formally, can understand each other perfectly well. So for a native speaker of either language, it would seem they are pretty close. -
ICE vs EV, the debate thread
GroveHillWanderer replied to KhunLA's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
BYD is already going all in on that investment. They've installed over 500 of them in China so far and the number will rise to thousands by next year. They intend to start installing them in Europe next year as well. BYD’s new EV flash chargers are as fast as petrol pumps – here’s when they’re arriving in the UK https://www.independent.co.uk/cars/electric-vehicles/byd-electric-car-fast-flash-charging-b2768732.html -
Perhaps I've put it in slightly different terms to make it clearer, but it's the same information.

ICE vs EV, the debate thread
GroveHillWanderer replied to KhunLA's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
As BYD starts to implement their solid state battery technology (they've already started testing it in BYD Seal models) it seems two of the main objections of EV sceptics could be poised to disappear - range anxiety and charging time. BYD is testing solid-state EV batteries in its Seal sedan with nearly 1,200 miles of range https://electrek.co/2025/06/20/byd-tests-solid-state-batteries-seal-ev-with-1000-miles-range/ While the batteries are only in the testing phase now, BYD expects to start selling vehicles with them in, by 2027. -
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. As I said, the Kuy language name that the people themselves use, is Kuy. Suay is an exonym (used mainly by Thai people) to refer to them. It's very similar to the names used for the various hill tribes - the tribes call themselves by one name, the Thais use a different name (again, an exonym). I don't believe anything I have said contradicts what you're saying.
-
It's not an incorrect pronunciation, it's a different word altogether. Whereas Kuy (Gui) in the Kuy language means "people" or "human being", Suay is an exonym (a name used by people outside the group) meaning, "those who pay tribute."
