  1. I know someone asked this question a few months ago, but I can't find it, so sorry about the repeat.
Does anybody know where I can find inexpensive furniture?
    Second hand is also ok.
I am looking for a sofa, lounge chair, kitchen table and closets.
I am looking in Khon Kaen
    Thank you

I go 4, 415, 401 to Surat Thani then up the 41 to Chumphon, where it becomes the 4 again. All the way up to Pak Tho and hang a right to Bkk on the 35. Others will overshoot the 415 and take the 44 to Surat Thani but I prefer the former- there are still a few sections of single carriageway but they aren't that much of a pain.

    Thanks for the info!!

.... and not what he asked.

To the Op- I have no need to race around these days. I find its approx 3.5 hrs to Surat Thani then another 3 hrs or so up to Pran Buri where I stop for the night. I have done Hkt Bkk in ten hours before but wouldn't want to navigate Bangkok whilst tired. Anywhere from PKK up is fine to stop and it's broken the back of the journey for the next day.

I average 100- 120 kph but am happy at the lower end of this as I'm not in a rush. Plenty of PTT stations on the way so you are normally guaranteed clean porcelain and a 7-11 as well- always a bonus.  I also tend to chuck a cool box in the truck. There are a couple of big tescos on the way - again handy for clean porcelain and food.

I do know someone who did Hkt-Bkk and back in 20 hrs when the airports were closed but that is just madness. No way would I want to drive at the speeds he was doing.  This is not  an 'I heard from a mate, of a mate' anecdote- I heard him leave approx 0630 and get back about 0230 the next morning.

    Thanks for the info.

Do you remember the highway numbers you took from Phuket to Bangkok?

One poster directed the OP to a site where he could calculate distance. That's good to know but won't help much with drive time, TIT.

Example - I recently made a trip that was 162 miles/260 kilometers. In the Western world, that's a 2.5 hour trip. Google Maps said 4 hours & 1 minute. I usually avg 78 to 80 kilometers p/hour when I travel by car. I estimated 3.0 hours or so. It took 3 hours 25 minutes there & I made in back in 3 hours 10 minutes. Two lane roads 98% of the way, far too many towns/villages and sugar trucks everywhere.

Travel time here depends on type of road, condition of the road, how many villages you have to pass through, is it sugar season, or not...on & on.

The OP asked what the drive time was - distance is not relevant.

    Thanks for your reply.

Exactly, I want to know the "Real" time it takes by people who have done the drive.

A Google calculator and info does not take into account all the factors.

Formerly it was possible to turn right coming from the south on Mittraphap (HW #2).

After road works you now need to use a near U-turn.

Coming from the north is easy, just change to the frontage rd. before it goes uphill.

Entrance just after a pedestrian bridge.

Don't be shocked if the parking lot is full with 100+ cars.

It then is another police training/meeting on the premises.

Khon Kaen Immigration is located on the Police Academy campus - off Mittriphap road just past the University of Khon Kaen.

Their hours are 0830-1200 and 1300-1630 M-F.  I have found them easy to deal with and very helpful.

I have been using Khon Kaen office for 8 years now and I have never had a problem, always found them polite and helpful. I get there for them opening and normally in and out within 20 minutes, max 30, that is with visa extension renewal and multiple re entry visa.

Thank you both for your quick replies. Makes me feel more comfortable. Phuket IM can be a nightmare most of the time.

Just curious, about how many minute drive by car from Bangkok Hospital to Immigration? I will live in that area.

    Thanks again

  7. I will be moving to Khon Kaen next month after 10 years in Phuket.

I get a visa extension every year based on my marriage.

    I have 2 questions-

    1) Where is the Khon Kaen Immigration office located and what are their hours?

    2) Are they generally nice and pleasant to deal with?

    Thank you

  8. No prompt pay. I also have had refunds the past 3 years and they have taken between 2 and 3 months.

This year they told me it will take about 3 to 4 months.

I am moving to another city, so I am worried that the payment will come after I move. That is why I was curious if anyone had any experience with this year's refund to get a guide.

  9. We are moving to Khon Kaen soon from Phuket. We have a 12 year old boy.

We want him to learn Thai, English and Chinese. We can't afford an expensive private school.

We were told that the following school is perfect for the above. Please let me know if you have any experience or opinions on this school.

    Huakiew Withayolai School

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know as well.

    Thank you in advance.

I renewed my both DL at the PTO about 2 weeks ago.

Went there at 09:00 with the following documents :

Copies passport (Name page, Visa extension page, Entry stamp page and TM 6 card )

    Copies of the old DL

2 Proof of Residence papers from immigration.

3 people in line and after checking the documents went straight to the color and reaction test. (done in 10 Mins as i had 2 people in front of me)

Watched the movie at 10:00 ( they started the movie at 09:50 and finished it before the end at 10:50)

Down to pay the bill (waited for about 10 mins)

Took the picture for the new DL with again waiting about 5 mins as i had a few people in front of me.

So in the end it took me from 09:00 till 11:30 without any issues or problems.

All the staff where very friendly with reasonable good English.

    Thank you so much. Perfect!

The latter part of the previous post is correct.

The first 21 lines are not, as indicated in the text " People applying for a new licence to drive a car or motorbike ", this is only aplicable to new aplicants.

So for the OP: required are, besides the usual passport copies and CoR/WP/yellow book: medical certificate, copies of old license(s) and tests will be done: reaction, colour, depth perception and peripheral vision.

Thanks. I thought the previous post wan't correct. I also thought for the 5 year renewal you do not need a medical certificate.

This you ned to  renew your 5 year car drivers license in Phuket:

Phuket Rajabhat University is now providing viewing sessions of the compulsory road-safety video in order to reduce the time it takes to get a driver’s licence in Phuket.
People applying for a new licence to drive a car or motorbike must endure a five-hour video session as part of their compulsory road-safety training in order to be issued a licence.

Those applying to renew their existing licence must complete viewing a one-hour “training” video session.

The training video sessions at the PRU campus in Rassada are provided under a joint project between the Provincial Land Transport Office (PLTO) and Rajabhat University, an official from the PLTO confirmed today (June 16).

The video sessions are being offered due to the PLTO being busy daily, and will be offered until September until further notice, the PLTO official told The Phuket News.

“People still have to go to the PLTO to take the eyesight and other tests to be issued a licence. We do not offer these,” said Dr Sumran Chaisawas, of the Political and Administrative Science Faculty, who is heading the project at PRU.

Participants will be issued a certificate to present to the PLTO when applying for their licences.

“Training days are every Thursday and Sunday. For those without an initial licence, the training starts at 8:30am and finishes at 2:30pm with a lunch break from midday to 1pm,” he explained.

“Those renewing their licence are only required to view the training video for one hour, but are welcome to stay for longer to view the rest of the video.”

“The video sessions are held in Room 756, on the fifth floor of Building 7 (Law Building),” Dr Sumran added.

Viewing the five-hour video session costs B500. Viewing the one-hour video session costs B200.

“The video sessions will be provided until September for now. If we have enough customers, it may be extended,” said Dr Sumran.

To register, visit the PRU Office 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, or call Dr Sumran at 093-6592591.

Thais must bring a signed copy of their ID card.

Foreigners must bring with them their passports, plus signed copies of the photo, visa and permit-to-stay pages; their work permits if they have one, plus signed copies of the relevant pages; and a letter from Immigration confirming the foreigner’s address.

On successful completion of watching the relevant training video sessions,

For more information call Dr Sumran or contact the PLTO at 076-220791.

I am a bit confused, Do you have to take the 1 hour video at Rajabhat or can you still watch the video at the Land Transport office. It looks to me this is an option to reduce the load, but the Land Transport still offers the video. Am I wrong?

Also, the video is offered free at the Land Transport office, so it does not make sense to force people to watch the video elsewhere and pay for it.
