  1. I find this amazing. The Acorn group buy the Shennanigans in Pattaya, make a complete mess of running it, close it down, and move on to Shennanigans in Jomtien. First move sack the manager, who has been there for a few years, and by all accounts is pretty popular and doing a decent job.

So is anyone taking any bets on how long it will be before jomtien closes down. You have to ask if the people behind this group have ever run a pub/restaurant in their lives or if they are just successful businesmen in other fields, who think running such a place is easy. I have run bars for many years and believe me it is not easy, especially here when dealing with staff of a completely different culture. But the aim is still the same,"Customer Satisfaction". If you don't achieve that then you will fail.

But it is not just the Acorn group that don't seem to be able to run a bar/restaurant properly. Another great example is the Marriot/Minor group who run Dicey Reilly's. Despite being a world reknowned company famous for it's service and hospitality, they just can't seem to make a success of a small bar, in a popular holiday resort. Boggling.

  2. Sorry "Cloghead" you are 100% wrong. Dicey Reilly's is owned and operated by the Marriot/Minor group. If you go for a position say as Pub Manager at Dicey's you are interviewed by the Food and Beverage manager from the Marriot. And all staff are employed by the Marriot/Minor group.

  3. Here's an intereting scenario. Yingluck asks for permission to borrow billions of bhat to pay the farmers. The EC refuse her permission. Yinluck in panic mode calls all her advisers to a meeting, and says if we can't pay the farmers now, we have no chance of winning the election, so let's agree to the EC's request for a postponement, and maybe we can find a way to get the money for the farmers from elsewhere. So off she goes to the EC, and says ok we will call of the election until May. But the EC replies, sorry but you have already told the country that it would be illegal to call off the election, so it has to go ahead. Oh shit, what do i do now.

  4. Hope someone can help me. I have a friend who is looking to buy a rottweiler. I have heard that there is somehwere in Surin that sells them. He is in the Sisaket area, and anywhere close to there would be helpful.

  5. To someone called "HULU" u sent me a pm, unfortunately i cannot reply for some reason. Also I don't understand your question. All I can say is that I have never owned Peppers, I don't know if your question is supposed to be genuine or pure sarcasm, so please explain it to me.

  6. Sirchai, how very harsh of you to suggest that arsenal and Borussia fans are burger eating hooligans. You obviously can't be referring to me, because i fill my buns with crispy bacon, eggs and tomatoes. My best friend in Thailand is a german guy down in Pattaya, he owns a bar there. Everytime he tries to tell me how superior the german people are over the brits I have a little saying for him "2 world wars and 1 world cup <deleted> ya <deleted> ya". all in good fun mate. I remeber you trying to do all you could to help Gerhardt a while ago, he lived about 2 kilometres from me, and i always found him to be a good man, but after he split from his wife and moved to Sisaket, i rarely saw him. anyway hope we meet one day for a beer and a BURGER.

  7. Well Niwpix, when i come bacl next month, and i will be back, for my oversized burger buns, i will wear my Manchester City shirt, and you can talk to a real football man. And if that "Arsenal" guy wants to join in, we can talk about the last time his team won a trophy, HA HA. Just joking Patriot.

  8. Micheal hare what a pathetic statement. we are not talking about 20 years ago, we are talking about today. When you walk into a bakery early in the morning, would you not expect to smell fresh baked bread.

  9. Once again i am not in anyway saying anything bad about peppers products. This is just about personal taste. The things that i originally went for the burger buns are great, and i agree about the cakes they too are absolutely great. It was just that the bread wasn't to my liking, the filling in the mince and onion pie was also really tasty, but the pastry not to my liking. Sorry if i have upset anyone.

  10. Here I am reporting back. I have always been very picky about food. Back in the Uk, my wife had to buy a fresh loaf of bread everyday, I could not eat bread that was more than a day old. As for pastry I am used to pastry that is made with lard, and not butter. I realise that lard is very hard to come by in Thailand.

Sadly as soon as I opened the bread i bought today, it had a slight vanilla smell to it, which told me that it had been made with butter, I don't know if it was thai or australian butter, but I just could not eat it, and the same thing applied to the pastry in the pie. The filling of the pie was great, it had a good hint of pepper about it, and I love pepper.

As I said I can only eat bread that is baked on the day I buy it.

And obviously this bread was not baked today. The thing I don't understand is that my "Over sized Burger Buns" taste fantastic, do they use a different recipe for these buns.

As I said a great looking shop, but sadly for me, not what I am looking for. Please don't give me loads of grief over my comments, because obviously not all our tastebuds are the same. Many people will love Peppers bread and pies, but sadly not for me.

  11. Well. I finally made Peppers this morning at about 9-30am. I was very impressed by the shop, very clean and well set out. I met a guy who I think was the guy who just sold the place, and he was very ameanable. I got my "Oversized burger buns" and i also bought a loaf of bread, only one until I know if I like it. I also bought some pies, which I have to say looked delicious, and I will be trying them in about 1 hour along with the bread. i also bought a couple of burgers, once again to find if I liked them. And my wife, like all thais has a sweet tooth, and so she bought a black forest cake and a white chocolate cake. she loved them.

If I can have a small critisism, when I walk into a bakery early in the morning in the Uk, the first thing I want is the smell of freshly baked bread, unfortunately I didn't get it, which tells me that the bread I bought wasn't baked today. And when you go into a bakery in the Uk there is always a display of freshly baked bread. That wasn't there.

I am about to eat my pie, with chips and gravy, and I hope to have a really good chip butty. will let you know soon if I enjoyed it.

  12. So when i come to buy my "oversized burger buns" can i buy the burgers with them to take home and cook myself. Also do peppers make a good pie, like mince and onion, meat and potatoe, steak. It is very hard to get a good pie in Thailand. I have tried Staffords from Prassat, they were average but very dry, no moisture. Steve from Buriram were better, and his corned beef pasties are great. But i long for a good pie. cheers guys.

  13. In order to make sure i never had the worry of the guiness going a little bit off, i ran clean water through my lines every night after closing. This ensured i had fresh guiness to start off the next day, and fortunately we were busy enough to make sure that it was never in the pipe long enough during opening hours.

  14. Can anyone in Ubon tell me what time Peppers usally have their fresh baked bread ready. I will be arriving in Ubon around about 9am, and was wondering if that would be to early to get some fresh baked bread. cheers.

  15. I also found it very strange, because a large bottle of leo, before the price rise was 50baht. But the wholsale price went up by 7 baht a bottle, so i would understand if the price in the shop went up by 10baht a bottle, but for me she only put it up by 5 baht, and even when i was told the price for thais, and i offered to pay 60baht, the lady said no for farang only 55baht.

  16. We are always hearing about how farangs are charged more than thais. Well here is a refreshing change. I often use a little shop in my village, when I don't have my Singha Lite. Yesterday I was at a funeral, and we needed some beer, so I aked a thai guy to go and get me 6 bottles of Leo. I gave him 330baht (55baht a bottle) He said not enough it is 60Baht a bottle, so i said I will go with you, and lo and behold it was only 55 for me, but the lady in the shop said it was 60 for thai people, to say I was shocked is a understatement. One up for the farangs.
