Thanks to all for useful info.

  3. Someone who needs useable advices and competent recommendations from the staff as well as fair prices/discounts regarding hardware should give the "Montri Machine Tools" shop at the inner corner of the inner super highway and Chotana Rd. (N18 48 41.9 E98 59 04.0) a try.

    Unfortunately only Thai spoken.

Most of their staff work there since many years, and I'm an always satisfied customer since many years, too.

  4. I am pretty rude to most of them these days and I run them off quickly. I'll ask one question, if they don't know the answer I tell them to leave me alone. 99% of them are a waste of oxygen.

    Strong stuff ...!

So - for the sake of efficiency - what to give them to breathe?

BTW - German roots, by any chance ...?

  5. Take the main road to sankhampaeng (hot springs) and go over the mountain (same road that leads from Central Airport Plaza and crosses super highway). Just keep going straight.

When you come down there are many nurseries.

They have no cultivated fruit trees. Only trees from the jungle.

  6. I'm planning to bring a new bike (http://www.canyon.co...ike.html?b=3041) with me when I return from my annual family visit in May. I thought back and forth and at the end I came to the conclusion that this is the best value for money solution. Not available at this price in Thailand.

Check with your airline before you show up at the counter with your goodies. You may get sticker shocked at the cost of bringing it back with you. I bought an inflatable kayak a year ago in China and the excess baggage fee was more than the kayak. It was still half the cost of buying a similar kayak in Thailand, but.... dam_n.

Since the kayak packed down to a regular looking bag, nobody at customs gave it a second look, but I wonder what they'd do if you had a brand new box obviously packed full of stuff with a high import duty rate?

Thanks for your advise, impulse. Of course you're right.

But the bike won't look brand new anymore (after some weeks of use in Europe), and it will not exceed my free luggage weight. Airline will take no extra charge.

I have lots of friends and visitors (http://www.warmshowers.org/) who enter Thailand with their chariots, be it by air or by road. No one was ever asked to pay customs duty.

BTW - import duty rate for a new bicycle is 30% of the purchase price.

  7. I use Chain-L No.5, although it's a wet lube but it really quietens the drivetrain and reapplying the lube is pretty easy. It does have a tendency to gather a lot of muck if you apply too much though.

Chain-L No.5 is my first-line chain lube, too, since years.

I demount the chain (SRAM master link, works fine even with Shimano chains), clean it with diesel and a tooth brush link by link, blow it out by a compressor, oil it (link by link) from the inner side and let it soak during night. In the morning I remove the surplus oil by a clean cloth. Good for about 300 kms, depends on the dust situation. Meaning 15 mins soft job for 10 days of undisturbed cycling joy. So your chain can last 5'000 kms or more.

  8. Still out fishing. You don't give in do you.

    Sad indeed.

You never answered my question (many moons ago now) about the stereo analogy. So...would you take your Bose / Bang and Ollufsun stereo to a AJ / Aconatic repair man?

    Thought not.

DaamNaam, try the following as I did:

Click on your user name (top right) > Click on "Manage Ignore Prefs" > Add the user > Save changes > Peace of mind.

  9. Indeed Chiang Mai is part of the "Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Corridor System" planning (Google it; innumerable links) but it's clear that the main transportation refers to road traffic. And one thing is sure - it will come.

I don't think so. From Burma to BKK by road you either go down hwy 1 via Lampang, or via Mae Sot & Tak, both routes bypassing Chiang Mai. From China, the route also doesn't come through CM. Trains, forget it.

I can only repeat my advise to use Google, and I gave the keyword to look for ...

My wife is deeply involved in this matter through the Asian Development Bank (a billions of dollars project), and I also work in logistics administration business. I know what I'm writing about ... But you are right --- you don't need to think so ...

I didn't say the traffic will go through the inner city of Chiang Mai.

  10. In spite of the delicious beer and edible food, and although I liked the show and kind of music (especially the traditional thai/modern instruments mix) the sound was always way too loud, so verbal communication was impossible. So I stopped visits about 5 years ago as well as most of our friends, whether Thais or farangs. Actually it's a pity ...

  11. Today a friend and I saw a man walking along Moonmueang Rd.. For me it was 100% clear it was Rolling Stone Keith Richards, my friend said no. So after a while we bet.

Thus my simple question: Does anybody know if Mr. Richards is in town? Did anybody see him, too?

  12. I heard that "Tha Nam" (in former days the nice old-style teak restaurant on the left side between Ratilanna hotel and airport highway) has recently re-opened at a new location, again somewhere at the river bank. Googled but information very confusing, some definitely wrong. Can someone pls describe where it really is? Coordinates would be most appreciated.

    Thanks a lot.
