  1. Very nice! But it doesn't search Air Asia and other LCCs. I searched BKK - Krabi and it only showed Bangkok Airways. ;-(

A lot of LCCs use DMK so you may need to use that to search (even though in the big GDSes BKK as a code does include DMK).

    PG uses BKK/SBIA exclusively.

Some like this Android app.: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zvzz.android.timetable

  2. While Thailand's political crisis has revolved around charges of corruption, the "big fish" have rarely been caught. Charges of "insufficient proof" have often been used by one side, or the camp led by Thaksin Shinawatra to be exact.

Maybe I'm wrong but I am pretty sure Thaksin Shinawatra is one of the few "big"fish" actually convicted in a court of law, circa October 21, 2008.

Over the last 70 years, most other "big fish", of all ilks, have been allowed sneak away with their booty without facing trial, and then return after the statute of limitations has expired.

  3. Good Lord! This lot has got its head screwed on more than any Government I've experienced in the last 12 years... be it party led or Military led.

    Way to go boys!! clap2.gifwai.gif

You do realize that this is a list?

    Two stand out:

    3 Proceed with delayed projects under the 2014 budget;
so proceed with what the previous government approved.
    8 Modernisation of state enterprises;
    good luck with this one.
Happy to be corrected, but I believe that the low diesel price is NOT the result of any subsidy that will drain government coffers. Rather, it results from the government not collecting fuel tax on diesel, as it does on petrol.
Partially correct in that yes, there is a significant decrease in tax revenue, and consumption/traffic/pollution all increase.
Maybe just give free beer to everyone?
Just two days ago the "Government" announced an increase in LPG prices, evidently that didn't last long? Head screwed on, easily screwed off.
A re-jig of fuel prices - including liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas for vehicles and diesel - is an urgent matter, so the Energy Ministry will go ahead with a plan to increase LPG prices, which have to be raised by another Bt0.50 per kilogram this Sunday, from Bt22.63 at present.
This was announced by Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong, the junta's chief of economic affairs, after talks with Energy Ministry officials yesterday.
  4. TuneTalk is a virtual operator.

Yes, Tune Talk is a Malaysian MVNO reselling services in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. They are part of Tony Fernandes' AirASia empire. Here in Thailand I believe their only (single) partner is TOT. TOT is a state agency with a 3G/2100 MHz 3G voice and data network. It's a bit old in the tooth now, but they have great coverage and almost no customers so it might work out OK?

I've never seen any Tune Talk SIMs available here; maybe they sell or give them out on AirAsia flights?

Their website seems a bit out of date, and of course nothing indicating where to buy. Also very limited top-up options.

  5. Thanks. Seems like 299 baht is the going rate for 7 days of internet, which seems too expensive considering that it only costs a little bit more to get 30 days. Is there a cheaper 7-day SIM?

Most of the 299 tourist SIMs (VAT is included) offer bundled voice and data; typically 100 minutes of local calling, and 1 GB of data. When one values the SIM at 50 baht, the 100 min at 100 baht and the 1 GB of data over 1 week at 199, they may represent a value.

Or you can just buy any SIM for 50 baht and then layer on the mobile data plan which meets your usage/budgetary requirements. There are dozens, maybe hundreds of different mobile data plans all with different characteristics: duration, volume, speed, time, etc.

At a minimum you're probably looking at 50 baht for a SIM and 214 baht (with 7% VAT) for a decent ( 1 GB unlimited FuP 384 Kbps ) mobile data plan. So 264 baht vs. 299 baht, and 100 minutes of calling. seems like a decent value?

  6. So the 4,450 baht figure is made up primarily for the six-month pre-payment (3,790 incl VAT), plus what, another 650 for a router? It almost sounds like the actual installation fee is zero?

Other than coming up with the cash now, this doesn't seem totally unreasonable? I mean, you're going to have the service for a minimum of 12 months, and this saves the hassle of making six payments.

  7. It would probably help if you could detail which speedtest services you used/are using? Which ISP? Which streaming services, etc.?

More and more people are turning to the internet for both news, and for streaming services, so it might not be unexpected to see some degradation in throughput, ping, jitter, etc.?

I imagine it might get worse when the World Cup begins?

I personally haven't noticed any significant degradation, but I do not do daily speedtests so cannot vouch for any changes.

We support a number of internet access customers and there have been no complaints specifically about throughput.

  8. Most regional LCCs are omitted from the large GDSes and thus from consolidators/web retail.

You'd have to first figure out which carriers service the city pair (BKK/DMK-CNX), then look at those airlines distribution channels/web-sites.

PG, TG, WE (Thai Smile) for BKK-CNX

    FD, DD, SL for DMK-CNX

There could be more, I excluded code-shares, maybe check the AOT/CNX website for arrivals/departures, sift for BKK and DMK?

Note that code-shares, flights operated by one airline but sold/marketed by another, can represent value for a whole bunch of reasons. TG and PG codeshare with many airlines for BKK-CNX.

  9. I think it is widely accepted, by even the most skeptical individuals, along with tobacco company management, that increasing the price of tobacco products, primarily through increasing the tax, leads to a decrease in consumption. The only debate/variable might be the actual decrease in consumption for a given increase. I suspect this will vary quite a bit based on current consumption patterns, local wages, actual % of local disposable income and a bunch of other variables I'm omitting through ignorance/lack of knowledge on the subject.

Increasing the overall price probably does more to decrease consumption than almost any other effort including education, warning labels, health warnings, etc.

  10. I doubt there is one single answer to the OP's question without bounding the actual question?

Given a certain published unemployment figure, how accurate might that be?

I guess you could express it in a percentage, with a +/- to reflect an acceptable range?

Note that many people are employed at a rate which is below the minimum threshold to pay income tax. Just because someone is not paying an income tax does not mean that they are unemployed.

TDRI has some research/publications, including this overview of the labor market here, published this past week.

    http://tdri.or.th/en/tdri-insight/looking-beyond-today-the-future-of-thai-labor-in-2014-when-economy-is-bad-and-politics-is-worsened/

Looking Beyond Today: The future of Thai labor in 2014 when economy is bad and politics is worsened
    Release 2014-05-28
    Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI)
TDRI Director of Labor Development looked beyond the here and now to warn laborers on the effects from economic problems and the prolonged political crisis while unemployment among university graduates may continually rise.
The prolonged and unresolved political situation has increasingly driven the other problems in the Thai society, which deserve to be solved, to a desolate corner, especially the directly and the indirectly affected troubles of the Thai laborers.
Dr. Yongyuth Chalamwong, Research Director for Labor Development, Thailand Development Research Institute or TDRI, said that the unimproved economy due to several factors deriving from export, domestic consumption and the government’s expenditure during its transitory period is expected to slow down the economic growth in the first quarter and may gradually recover in the second, third and fourth quarters.
The macroeconomist continued that if the political problems are quickly resolved, the spillover effects will not be so severe since Thailand still enjoys a low unemployment rate while the labor market structure focuses on the lower level which mainly uses foreign workers for skilled labor. The labor market fluctuation is likely to absorb the unemployment of the lower level whereas the middle level labor still lacks technicians.
  11. We manage many customer sites with 3BB DSL, and while most of those have been free installs (new houses in recently constructed housing developments in suburban Bangkok), I did quote a range from zero (baht) up to several thousand baht, with this latter figure being based on my recollection of the dozens of similar posts here over the years. By installation, I specifically mean pulling the wire into your domicile from the nearest currently available access point, rather than any additional fees for equipment or service in advance.

Our most recent install, ~ 90 days ago, waived the installation fee ( which was mentioned as a 1,500 baht "promotional credit" ), and required one month service paid upon installation, I think 963 baht incl VAT for 13/1 service. This customer was using a modem/router/WiFI AP which we supplied, but my recollection of the price list I saw was maybe 100 baht deposit for a basic free /modem/router, and then a few other modem/router/WiFi options for purchase for ~ 700/1,000 baht.

I think you should first determine if 3BB is available in your location.

edited to add: I pinged a colleague and was informed that the "standard" 3BB internet access installation price is 3,585 baht, but that this is negotiable down to zero, and anywhere in between, based on the individual physical location/situation.

    http://www.3bb.co.th/promotion/en/6mb.php

  12. Installation costs tend to be the primary start-up cost as the first month's payment may not be due for up to 59 days, and I think they give you the modem for free. Installation costs can be variable depending on the exact physical location and situation, and these might range from zero up to several thousand baht. I assume you understand that you may need to satisfy a residency requirement in order to enter into a contract with 3BB?

Maybe best to chat with neighbors to see what their experience was with 3BB, or just ask 3BB for a quote?

  13. I would recommend using a known good, reliable non-public WiFi connection preferably one over which you have total account control. I'd also recommend using a PC (assuming you have the older version) with a cabled ethernet connection, rather than WiFi.

With a shared public WiFi connection you may/will not have the requisite bandwidth; obviously if the chap in the next room starts to stream a YouTuibe video your call may break-up/terminate. A 3G connection might be preferable to a shared WiFi connection? You really need a solid, reliable, jitter-tolerant connection of at least 100 Kbps both up and down.

Yes, your ten digit telephone number associated with your mJ in the U.S. does and will get passed as the CPID to the called party, which depending on their equipment, would be displayed on their device.

If you need to make an important, crystal-clear call then I would suggest using a land-line and a calling card; your CPID would show as an odd or unique number, but often it appears as a ten digit number associated with the VoIP gateway in the U.S.

Can't speak for the Philippines, all my experience is with mJ here in Thailand.

  14. I'm with AIS One-2-Call and have had the same number for many years (about 8). I got a new SIM card last year because I had mislaid the original.

I'm in the UK at present. *101*9# = invalid request.

I have a text msg from AIS about how to make calls when roaming. It starts:

    AIS3g One-2-Call lets you send-receive SMS/receive calls .................

So would I be correct to take from that, that I am already on 3g? (I have an old non-smart phone).

For AIS/One-2-Call, assuming you have a signal from one of their IR partners in the UK, the command would be *121# Send

You may have been transitioned to the new AIS/One-2-Call 2100 MHz subsidiary (AWN) last year when you got a new SIM, although this is just a guess. Again, not relevant to the topic of the original post.

  15. He famously wagered $20,000 at 22:1 odds (pre-season) for the Ravens to win the Superbowl in the 2000 season (Superbowl 35 in Jan. 2001), and won.

There have been a lot of stories/rumors re: his gambling activities.

There are also rumors that Mickelson and company bet another $20,000 on the Arizona Diamondbacks to win the World Series in 2001; they won. The odds of the D’backs to win it were priced at 38-1.

As long as he tells the truth re: insider trading he will be fine. If he prevaricates then he could get in trouble; this is actually (lying) what did Martha Stewart in.

He may suffer from loss of sponsors as they all have iron-clad contracts re: unacceptable behavior.

  16. Do you have a mobile phone?

    Do you have a budget?

Any details on the tablet? WiFi only?

Based on what little detail you've provided I might recommend a MiFi device, which allows you to share the mobile data connection via WiFi. But you may already have a phone that does this?

    More detail always helps.

I might also recommend TrueMove H, their SIMs are easy to extend validity to 1 year with multiple small value top-ups ( 12 top-ups, 10/12 baht each, so 1 year expiry for 144 baht ).
