  1. TOT have MVNOs like iMobile and TuneTalk, but you should be able to find a TOT 3G SIM languishing on the shelves of just about any shop (7/11, mobile, etc.) which sells SIMs.

For CAT just get a TrueMove H SIM. TrueMove H is (essentially) an MVNO for CAT's 850 MHz 3G service. My by CAT SIMs will be harder to source, but maybe just dredge a larger mall's phone counters?

You may find more detail on Google or Facebook?

    http://www.mybycat.com/shop.php?id=34

    TOT is 2100 MHz 3G, while CAT/TrueMove H is 850 MHz 3G.

  2. For True Online 13/1 DSL the current price is 899, or 962 with VAT plus 107 for any fixed line.

So you should renegotiate your fee.

Specifically re: exact data rates, those are probably acceptable levels for the service class.

What are the speedtest results from the True Online speedtest site? http://speedtest.trueinternet.co.th/

We have five 13/1 DSL lines here, here are the current stats from one

    SNR Up : 26.4
    SNR Down : 15.7
    Line Attenuation Up : 10.5
    Line Attenuation Down : 8.4
    Data Rate Up : 1242 *
    Data Rate Down : 15328 *

    * max. achievable, provisioned at lower speeds.

There are a ton of bundled promotions available as well. See pages 41 - 47 here: (all still active) http://true.listedcompany.com/misc/PRESN/20140605-TRUE-keyPromotion.pdf

  3. There seems to be a lot of ignorance about the skills and experience in the Junta. If there is one thing that military are good at, apart from the soldiering - its all the engineering and infrastructure jobs.

I guess I'd like to hear more about specifics. Can you share any details re: the Thai Military's experience, good or bad, specifically with large engineering and infrastructure jobs?

Also, note that said Deputy economic chief Gen. Chatchai Sarikalaya is also responsible for financial institutions, industry, information and communication technology, agriculture and natural resources, so am anxious to hear what other things the Military are good at, besides soldiering and digging latrines?

  4. Seems like law enforcement here has worked more in the last 2 weeks than in the past few years!

It is amazing that the masses are placated with a few headlines.

First of all, this was a press event. Second, it kicked off a training course. Nothing has actually been accomplished.

This problem has been around longer than the despised red menace, and those who really benefit may not want it to be addressed.

  5. I finally updated my phone and plan so am now seeing LTE in/around metro-Bangkok. LTE speeds are more symmetrical (12 Mbps/9/Mps) than 3G (25 Mbps/3Mbps), and it's free.

DTAC's WiFi, which has very limited availability, offers sick speeds.

  6. Could you please explain to me how the General became Prime Minister especially in the title? AFAIR there hasn't been an election and I am fairly sure that he hasn't been proclaimed by himself or anybody else that he is the PM.

Well, being "fairly sure" just doesn't cut now, does it? cheesy.gif

Uhm, well he declared himself PM with order #10 on 23 May 2014.

Thailand coup: Army chief declares himself acting PM
    PUBLISHED ON MAY 23, 2014 11:35 AM
BANGKOK - Thai army chief and coup leader Prayuth Chan-ocha has declared himself the acting prime minister until the new coup regime announced on Thursday can find someone to serve in the post full time, it was reported.
According to the Bangkok Post, the National Peace and Order Maintaining Council (NPOMC) made the announcement on Thursday night, saying General Prayuth will act as prime minister for administrative purposes.

He has no political experience, and you said that you, for one, could not believe that someone without political experience could be PM.

I realize that you are confused, but seriously, get up to speed, or go back to sleep.

  7. Do you believe that a person with NO political experience is capable of being a Prime Minister and running a country like Thailand?

    I certainly don't.

Not sure how to break this to you, but General Prayuth Chan-ocha is the current Prime Minister; pretty sure he doesn't have any political experience, although maybe he was president of his high school drama club - given he's such a drama queen?

The odds that high ranking soldiers are even remotely qualified to review and understand water resource management are like a million to one.

  8. I am seeing a new TV campaign, with theme music...

    "Return happiness to Thailand"

Thai army chief shows sensitive side with 'happiness' song
BANGKOK (AFP) - A ballad penned by a coup-making army chief promising to bring happiness back to Thailand has been viewed more than 200,000 times on YouTube, in the military's latest effort to put a positive spin on its putsch. The normally stern-faced General Prayut Chan-O-Cha, who led the May 22 military overthrow of the civilian government, can now list songwriting among his talents after writing the lyrics to "Return happiness to Thailand".
The song - featuring reassuring lines such as "we offer to take care and protect you with our hearts" and "give us a little more time" - has proved an hit since the Royal Thai Army band put Gen Prayut's words to music on Friday and released it on their website.
By Monday, one uploaded video on YouTube had garnered 150,000 views, while other media sources posted links to the patriotic song that generated tens of thousands more hits.
  9. Not much choice here, they've been losing money forever and they desperately need capital both to build out their 2100 MHz 3G network, and to bid on the upcoming 1800 MHz auction. They tried to raise some capital through a questionable GIF, rather unsuccessfully, so selling a portion of the company was really the only option. They've been borrowing money at high rates to cover cash-flow "problems" which put them even further in the hole.

Net, net this is good news as it is better to have three providers lending a bit more competition. Not sure about management though? Based on their past performance it may be time to bring in professionals?

  10. This reporter sounds like a real <deleted>.

It's an Op-ed piece (hint: opinion), not factual reporting.

In other news, NCPO in a very, very, very Un/Non-populist action:

Thailand's Commerce Ministry says it will freeze the prices of many consumer goods for the next six months to hold down living costs and boost the economy.

The items include beverages, rice, palm oil, instant foods, dairy products, household products, animal feed and fertiliser.
Srirat Rastapana, the ministry's permanent secretary and acting minister since the coup, says companies and trade associations will comply.
"Producers of 205 categories of necessary consumer goods are happy to freeze prices for six months," he said.
    Yeah, "happy". cheesy.gif
  11. He also urged the officials to be ready for the rainy season.

Now you can see why he was put in charge of Thai Water and flood management project's action plan.

Yes, this chap with the numerous, long titles (General, Deputy Chief and Deputy Leader, guess Deputy Dawg was taken?), seems to be truly a man of leadership, action and vision. cheesy.gif

Surprised he didn't have custom wellies, boats and umbrellas fashioned for everyone?

  12. As for being out the way, Taxis are cheap,as chips here

Agreed, just hate getting stuck in traffic, but that's my personal issue. The big, new, comfortable, amazing sound/digital Major and SF cinemas are rarely crowded, in my experience, but then they rarely show art films. Apex-Siam used to show similar/the same films as House Rama RCA, and was obviously easier to get to. Lido (1+) still shows art films. Le Week-End is there now.

I usually take a motorcy from Petchaburi MRT (exit #1), or even walk.

Not sure if the Khlong San Saep boat service, arguably not for everyone, especially those who might be elderly or infirmed ( Wat Mai Chong Pier, behind the Ital-Thai tower) can ease the trip - I've never tried it, with a walk up and over, or a motorcy via u-turn?

  13. It's still going to get burgled once people know it's yours, who you are, what they've seen you bring in, when you're gone, etc.

The 10 minute walk to the BTS will be the challenge I think.

Other than that I'd say 3,000 baht/month? For 5,000-ish you could probably find something less sketchy, but potentially more secure, if only because it is a bit more "public"?

Or are you offering up your property for rent?

  14. Time to place more orders for Royal Thai Navy frigates ( ~ 15 Biilion baht per from Daewoo ) to beat back those pesky Rohingya.

I wonder which "past governments" will be subject to the Military's scrutiny? Will they be charged with crimes?

FWIW, the Military has messed things up in the past, probably worse than ordinary citizens, when they take on the additional role of politically managing the Kingdom.

  15. Random reflections:

nearly everything here is subsidized save rainbows, unicorns and snow; the Junta has ordered a price freeze on many/most items for six months, but this is not a populist policy of course.

petrol/cooking oil/gas has been subsidized for eons; likely coal/wood/kindling were subsidized previously.

the PTT board is littered with Military types, including current Economy supremo Air Chief Marshal Prajin Chantong .

and, it is the Junta ordering PTT to "to address the high living expenses" of consumers.

Air Chief Marshal Prajin Chantong, last week reportedly ordered officials to complete a draft on energy structural reform this week "to address the high living expenses" of consumers.

  16. My internet has been considerably slow for quite a while now

Can you expand a bit on any specifics re: your applications? Is this considerable decrease in speed apparent during browsing? Other activities?

What DNS servers are you using, if you happen to know?

When did this slowness first become apparent? Was it fine one day, then problematic the next?

Do you have a fixed-line analog telephone associated with this service? Any strange noises on that phone?

Are you comfortable (/able to) logging in to your DSL modem/router? If so, can you share any details re: your DSL line statistics?

Can you chat with neighbors who are using True to see if they are having similar issues?

Can you contact True to ask them to check your line/service?

Based on absolutely zero information my only/best guesses would be: DNS problems, physical line problems, someone poaching your WiFi.

Sharing as much information as possible about your situation helps immensely.

  17. She was roundly panned and roasted in Thai social forums by a wide swath of Thais, for her tasteless comments, dragging the monarchy into her views, being a bit on the girth-challenged side and possibly being undeserving of the crown based on some "corruption". At least she made one bright decision, withdrawing.
